aab0757c66 Only disable folded features when it makes sense.
Some features that are tied together only make sense to be folded
together when enabling the feature. For example on AArch64 sve and
neon are tied together, however it doesn't make sense to disable neon
when disabling sve.

4cca436e30 Tie neon with fp-armv8.
In #91608 the fp-armv8 feature was removed as it's tied to the neon
feature. However disabling neon didn't actually disable the use of
floating point registers and instructions, for this `-fp-armv8` is
required.

Fix dependency tracking for debugger visualizers

This PR fixes dependency tracking for debugger visualizer files by changing the `debugger_visualizers` query to an `eval_always` query that scans the AST while it is still available. This way the set of visualizer files is already available when dep-info is emitted. Since the query is turned into an `eval_always` query, dependency tracking will now reliably detect changes to the visualizer script files themselves.

This avoids having to rebuild the whole compiler on each commit when `omit-git-hash = false`.

This reverts #46722, commit e0ab5d5feb.

Since #111167, commit 10b69dde3f, we are
generating DWARF subprograms in a way that is meant to be more compatible
with LLVM's expectations, so hopefully we don't need this workaround
rewriting CUs anymore.

4ce20663f7 Don't use an allocator shim for #[global_allocator]
This makes it possible to use liballoc/libstd in combination with
`--emit obj` if you use `#[global_allocator]`. Making it work for the
default libstd allocator would require weak functions, which are not
well supported on all systems.

Mark s390x condition code register as clobbered in inline assembly

Various s390x instructions (arithmetic operations, logical operations, comparisons, etc. see also "Condition Codes" section in [z/Architecture Reference Summary](https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/zarchitecture-reference-summary)) modify condition code register `cc`, but AFAIK there is currently no way to mark it as clobbered in `asm!`.

Output LLVM optimization remark kind in `-Cremark` output

Since https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/90833, the optimization remark kind has not been printed. Therefore it wasn't possible to easily determine from the log (in a programmatic way) which remark kind was produced. I think that the most interesting remarks are the missed ones, which can lead users to some code optimization.

Maybe we could also change the format closer to the "old" one:

I wanted to programatically parse the remarks so that they could work e.g. with https://github.com/OfekShilon/optview2. However, now that I think about it, probably the proper solution is to tell rustc to output them to YAML and then use the YAML as input for the opt remark visualization tools. The flag for enabling this does not seem to work though (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/96705#issuecomment-1117632322).

Still I think that it's good to output the remark kind anyway, it's an important piece of information.

debuginfo: split method declaration and definition

When we're adding a method to a type DIE, we only want a DW_AT_declaration
there, because LLVM LTO can't unify type definitions when a child DIE is a
full subprogram definition. Now the subprogram definition gets added at the
CU level with a specification link back to the abstract declaration.

Both GCC and Clang write debuginfo this way for C++ class methods.

Stabilize raw-dylib, link_ordinal, import_name_type and -Cdlltool

This stabilizes the `raw-dylib` feature (#58713) for all architectures (i.e., `x86` as it is already stable for all other architectures).

Changes:
* Permit the use of the `raw-dylib` link kind for x86, the `link_ordinal` attribute and the `import_name_type` key for the `link` attribute.
* Mark the `raw_dylib` feature as stable.
* Stabilized the `-Zdlltool` argument as `-Cdlltool`.
* Note the path to `dlltool` if invoking it failed (we don't need to do this if `dlltool` returns an error since it prints its path in the error message).
* Adds tests for `-Cdlltool`.
* Adds tests for being unable to find the dlltool executable, and dlltool failing.
* Fixes a bug where we were checking the exit code of dlltool to see if it failed, but dlltool always returns 0 (indicating success), so instead we need to check if anything was written to `stderr`.

NOTE: As previously noted (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/104218#issuecomment-1315895618) using dlltool within rustc is temporary, but this is not the first time that Rust has added a temporary tool use and argument: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/104218#issuecomment-1318720482

Add cross-language LLVM CFI support to the Rust compiler

This PR adds cross-language LLVM Control Flow Integrity (CFI) support to the Rust compiler by adding the `-Zsanitizer-cfi-normalize-integers` option to be used with Clang `-fsanitize-cfi-icall-normalize-integers` for normalizing integer types (see https://reviews.llvm.org/D139395).

It provides forward-edge control flow protection for C or C++ and Rust -compiled code "mixed binaries" (i.e., for when C or C++ and Rust -compiled code share the same virtual address space). For more information about LLVM CFI and cross-language LLVM CFI support for the Rust compiler, see design document in the tracking issue #89653.

Cross-language LLVM CFI can be enabled with -Zsanitizer=cfi and -Zsanitizer-cfi-normalize-integers, and requires proper (i.e., non-rustc) LTO (i.e., -Clinker-plugin-lto).

Report allocation errors as panics

OOM is now reported as a panic but with a custom payload type (`AllocErrorPanicPayload`) which holds the layout that was passed to `handle_alloc_error`.

This should be review one commit at a time:
- The first commit adds `AllocErrorPanicPayload` and changes allocation errors to always be reported as panics.
- The second commit removes `#[alloc_error_handler]` and the `alloc_error_hook` API.

Fluent, with all the icu4x it brings in, takes quite some time to compile. `fluent_messages!` is only needed in further downstream rustc crates, but is blocking more upstream crates like `rustc_index`. By splitting it out, we allow `rustc_macros` to be compiled earlier, which speeds up `x check compiler` by about 5 seconds (and even more after the needless dependency on `serde_json` is removed from `rustc_data_structures`).

Encode hashes as bytes, not varint

In a few places, we store hashes as `u64` or `u128` and then apply `derive(Decodable, Encodable)` to the enclosing struct/enum. It is more efficient to encode hashes directly than try to apply some varint encoding. This PR adds two new types `Hash64` and `Hash128` which are produced by `StableHasher` and replace every use of storing a `u64` or `u128` that represents a hash.

The -Cdebuginfo=1 option was never line tables only and can't be due to backwards compatibility issues. This was clarified and an option for emitting line tables only was added. Additionally an option for emitting line info directives only was added, which is needed for some targets, i.e. nvptx. The debug info options should now behave similarly to clang's debug info options.

0504a33383 Preserve, clarify, and extend debug information
`-Cdebuginfo=1` was never line tables only and
can't be due to backwards compatibility issues.
This was clarified and an option for line tables only
was added. Additionally an option for line info
directives only was added, which is well needed for
some targets. The debug info options should now
behave the same as clang's debug info options.

Partial stabilization of `once_cell`

This PR aims to stabilize a portion of the `once_cell` feature:

- `core::cell::OnceCell`
- `std::cell::OnceCell` (re-export of the above)
- `std::sync::OnceLock`

This will leave `LazyCell` and `LazyLock` unstabilized, which have been moved to the `lazy_cell` feature flag.

Update ar_archive_writer to 0.1.3

This updates object to 0.30 and fixes a bug where the symbol table would be omitted for archives where there are object files yet none that export any symbol. This bug could lead to linker errors for crates like rustc_std_workspace_core which don't contain any code of their own but exist solely for their dependencies. This is likely the cause of the linker issues I was experiencing on Webassembly. It has been shown to cause issues on other platforms too.

Fix cross-compiling with dlltool for raw-dylib

Fix for #103939

Issue Details:
When attempting to cross-compile using the `raw-dylib` feature and the GNU toolchain, rustc would attempt to find a cross-compiling version of dlltool (e.g., `i686-w64-mingw32-dlltool`). The has two issues 1) on Windows dlltool is always `dlltool` (no cross-compiling named versions exist) and 2) it only supported compiling to i686 and x86_64 resulting in ARM 32 and 64 compiling as x86_64.

Fix Details:
* On Windows always use the normal `dlltool` binary.
* Add the ARM64 cross-compiling dlltool name (support for this is coming: https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=29964)
* Provide the `-m` argument to dlltool to indicate the target machine type.

(This is the first of two PRs to fix the remaining issues for the `raw-dylib` feature (#58713) that is blocking stabilization (#104218))

tidy: enforce comment blocks to have an even number of backticks

After PR #108694, most unmatched backticks in `compiler/` comments have been eliminated. This PR adds a tidy lint to ensure no new unmatched backticks are added, and either addresses the lint in the remaining instances it found, or allows it.

Very often, backtick containing sections wrap around lines, for example:

// This function takes a tuple `(Vec<String>,
// Box<[u8]>)` and transforms it into `Vec<u8>`.
```

The lint is implemented to work on top of blocks, counting each line with a `//` into a block, and counting if there are an odd or even number of backticks in the entire block, instead of looking at just a single line.

Add `round_ties_even` to `f32` and `f64`

Tracking issue: #96710

Redux of #82273. See also #55107

Adds a new method, `round_ties_even`, to `f32` and `f64`, that rounds the float to the nearest integer , rounding halfway cases to the number with an even least significant bit. Uses the `roundeven` LLVM intrinsic to do this.

Of the five IEEE 754 rounding modes, this is the only one that doesn't already have a round-to-integer function exposed by Rust (others are `round`, `floor`, `ceil`, and `trunc`).  Ties-to-even is also the rounding mode used for int-to-float and float-to-float `as` casts, as well as float arithmentic operations. So not having an explicit rounding method for it seems like an oversight.

Bikeshed: this PR currently uses `round_ties_even` for the name of the method. But maybe `round_ties_to_even` is better, or `round_even`, or `round_to_even`?

2200911616 Rename many interner functions.
(This is a large commit. The changes to
`compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/context.rs` are the most important ones.)

The current naming scheme is a mess, with a mix of `_intern_`, `intern_`
and `mk_` prefixes, with little consistency. In particular, in many
cases it's easy to use an iterator interner when a (preferable) slice
interner is available.

The guiding principles of the new naming system:
- No `_intern_` prefixes.
- The `intern_` prefix is for internal operations.
- The `mk_` prefix is for external operations.
- For cases where there is a slice interner and an iterator interner,
  the former is `mk_foo` and the latter is `mk_foo_from_iter`.

Also, `slice_interners!` and `direct_interners!` can now be `pub` or
non-`pub`, which helps enforce the internal/external operations
division.

It's not perfect, but I think it's a clear improvement.

Remove type-traversal trait aliases

#107924 moved the type traversal (folding and visiting) traits into the type library, but created trait aliases in `rustc_middle` to minimise both the API churn for trait consumers and the arising boilerplate.  As mentioned in that PR, an alternative approach of defining subtraits with blanket implementations of the respective supertraits was also considered at that time but was ruled out as not adding much value.

Unfortunately, it has since emerged that rust-analyzer has difficulty with these trait aliases at present, resulting in a degraded contributor experience (see the recent [r-a has become useless](https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/182449-t-compiler.2Fhelp/topic/r-a.20has.20become.20useless) topic on the #t-compiler/help Zulip stream).

This PR removes the trait aliases, and accordingly the underlying type library traits are now used directly; they are parameterised by `TyCtxt<'tcx>` rather than just the `'tcx` lifetime, and imports have been updated to reflect the fact that the trait aliases' explicitly named traits are no longer automatically brought into scope.  These changes also roll-back the (no-longer required) workarounds to #107747 that were made in b409329c62.

Since this PR is just a find+replace together with the changes necessary for compilation & tidy to pass, it's currently just one mega-commit.  Let me know if you'd like it broken up.

d1fcf61117 errors: generate typed identifiers in each crate
Instead of loading the Fluent resources for every crate in
`rustc_error_messages`, each crate generates typed identifiers for its
own diagnostics and creates a static which are pulled together in the
`rustc_driver` crate and provided to the diagnostic emitter.

This PR adds support for KASan (kernel address sanitizer) instrumentation in freestanding targets. I included the minimal set of `x86_64-unknown-none`, `riscv64{imac, gc}-unknown-none-elf`, and `aarch64-unknown-none` but there's likely other targets it can be added to. (`linux_kernel_base.rs`?) KASan uses the address sanitizer attributes but has the `CompileKernel` parameter set to `true` in the pass creation.

tl;dr: This PR adds an explicit dlltool temporary filename prefix. The prefix resolves a race condition by ensuring dlltool temporary files are siloed in an appropriate/unique Rust temporary directory.

GNU dlltool, as part of its import library generation logic, uses a bunch of temporary files on disk. In the interest of deterministic build runs, dlltool supports deterministic temporary filenames. The temporary filename prefix is automatically generated internally or can be explicitly specified via a `--temp-prefix` argument.

GNU dlltool **2.38** (that ships with `x86_64-12.2.0-release-posix-seh-rt_v10-rev0` [installed during CI](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/blob/master/src/ci/scripts/install-mingw.sh)) generates a prefix based on the target library name ([source](https://sourceware.org/git/?p=binutils-gdb.git;a=blob;f=binutils/dlltool.c;h=d95bf3f5470b999fa3b30bc887791859f48d81d1;hb=20756b0fbe065a84710aa38f2457563b57546440#l3992)). The tool writes to files such as `target_dll_h.s` and `target_dll_s00203.o` in the current working directory.

This presents a problem when multiple instances of rustc_codegen_llvm are running to generate an import library (as part of the raw_dylib feature) for the same target library (e.g. kernel32) ([source](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/blob/master/compiler/rustc_codegen_llvm/src/back/archive.rs#L185-L196)). That is, dlltool instances race and may overwrite or delete files belonging to each other.

GNU dlltool **2.39**+ (not used in Rust CI) generates a prefix based on the output library path ([source](https://sourceware.org/git/?p=binutils-gdb.git;a=blob;f=binutils/dlltool.c;h=e2af20847009945b4c61a6fef08268fbb4429715;hb=b51c2fec1da205ea3e7354cbb3e253018d64873c#l3992)). The tool, when invoked as part of rustc_codegen_llvm, writes to files at paths such as `C_Users_Foo_AppData_Local_Temp_rustcOFqhXZ_target_lib_h.s`. (The output library path is normalized and non-alphanumeric characters are replaced with underscores.)

bac15db1d0 Emit basic XRay instrumentation attributes
Add the attributes to functions according to the settings.

"xray-always" overrides "xray-never", and they both override
"xray-ignore-loops" and "xray-instruction-threshold", but we'll
let lints deal with warnings about silly attribute combinations.

Don't merge vtables when full debuginfo is enabled.

This PR makes the compiler not emit the `unnamed_addr` attribute for vtables when full debuginfo is enabled, so that they don't get merged even if they have the same contents. This allows debuggers to more reliably map from a dyn pointer to the self-type of a trait object by looking at the vtable's debuginfo.

The PR only changes the behavior of the LLVM backend as other backends don't emit vtable debuginfo (as far as I can tell).

The performance impact of this change should be small as [measured](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/103514#issuecomment-1290833854) in a previous PR.

009192b01b abi: add AddressSpace field to Primitive::Pointer
...and remove it from `PointeeInfo`, which isn't meant for this.

There are still various places (marked with FIXMEs) that assume all pointers
have the same size and alignment. Fixing this requires parsing non-default
address spaces in the data layout string, which will be done in a followup.

645c0fddd2 Put noundef on all scalars that don't allow uninit
Previously, it was only put on scalars with range validity invariants
like bool, was uninit was obviously invalid for those.

Since then, we have normatively declared all uninit primitives to be
undefined behavior and can therefore put `noundef` on them.

The remaining concern was the `mem::uninitialized` function, which cause
quite a lot of UB in the older parts of the ecosystem. This function now
doesn't return uninit values anymore, making users of it safe from this
change.

The only real sources of UB where people could encounter uninit
primitives are `MaybeUninit::uninit().assume_init()`, which has always
be clear in the docs about being UB and from heap allocations (like
reading from the spare capacity of a vec. This is hopefully rare enough
to not break anything.

Don't internalize __llvm_profile_counter_bias

Currently, LLVM profiling runtime counter relocation cannot be used by rust during LTO because symbols are being internalized before all symbol information is known.

This mode makes LLVM emit a __llvm_profile_counter_bias symbol which is referenced by the profiling initialization, which itself is pulled in by the rust driver here [1].

It is enabled with -Cllvm-args=-runtime-counter-relocation for platforms which are opt-in to this mode like Linux. On these platforms there will be no link error, rather just surprising behavior for a user which request runtime counter relocation. The profiling runtime will not see that symbol go on as if it were never there. On Fuchsia, the profiling runtime must have this symbol which will cause a hard link error.

As an aside, I don't have enough context as to why rust's LTO model is how it is. AFAICT, the internalize pass is only safe to run at link time when all symbol information is actually known, this being an example as to why. I think special casing this symbol as a known one that LLVM can emit which should not have it's visbility de-escalated should be fine given how seldom this pattern of defining an undefined symbol to get initilization code pulled in is. From a quick grep, __llvm_profile_runtime is the only symbol that rustc does this for.

5873ebeef3 Move linkage type check to HIR analysis and fix semantics issues.
This ensures that the error is printed even for unused variables,
as well as unifying the handling between the LLVM and GCC backends.

This also fixes unusual behavior around exported Rust-defined variables
with linkage attributes. With the previous behavior, it appears to be
impossible to define such a variable such that it can actually be imported
and used by another crate. This is because on the importing side, the
variable is required to be a pointer, but on the exporting side, the
type checker rejects static variables of pointer type because they do
not implement `Sync`. Even if it were possible to import such a type, it
appears that code generation on the importing side would add an unexpected
additional level of pointer indirection, which would break type safety.

This highlighted that the semantics of linkage on Rust-defined variables
is different to linkage on foreign items. As such, we now model the
difference with two different codegen attributes: linkage for Rust-defined
variables, and import_linkage for foreign items.

This change gives semantics to the test
src/test/ui/linkage-attr/auxiliary/def_illtyped_external.rs which was
previously expected to fail to compile. Therefore, convert it into a
test that is expected to successfully compile.

The update to the GCC backend is speculative and untested.

Prevent DllImport from being attached to DSOLocal definitions in the LLVM IR. The combination makes no sense, since definitions local to the compilation unit will never be imported from external objects.

Additionally, LLVM will refuse the IR if it encounters the combination (introduced in [1]):

This was discovered when switching the EFI targets to the static relocation model [2]. With this fixed, we can start another attempt at this.

Print all features with --print target-features

This fixes `rustc --print target-features` with respect to aliases and tied features.

Before this change, the print command assumed that each LLVM feature corresponds exactly to one rustc feature.  In the case of aliases and tied features, this assumption failed and some features (such as aarch64's "pacg") were missing.  With this change, every target feature is listed.

Mark functions created for `raw-dylib` on x86 with DllImport storage class

Fix for #104453

## Issue Details
On x86 Windows, LLVM uses 'L' as the prefix for any private global symbols (`PrivateGlobalPrefix`), so when the `raw-dylib` feature creates an undecorated function symbol that begins with an 'L' LLVM misinterprets that as a private global symbol that it created and so fails the compilation at a later stage since such a symbol must have a definition.

## Fix Details
Mark the function we are creating for `raw-dylib` with `DllImport` storage class (this was already being done for MSVC at a later point for `callee::get_fn` but not for GNU (due to "backwards compatibility")): this will cause LLVM to prefix the name with `__imp_` and so it won't mistake it for a private global symbol.

Fix some misleading target feature aliases

This is the first half of a fix for #100752.  It looks like these aliases were added in #78361 and slipped under the radar, as these features are not AVX512.  These features _do_ add AVX512 instructions when used _in combination_ with AVX512F, but without AVX512F, these features still provide 128-bit and 256-bit vector instructions.  A user might be mislead into thinking these features imply AVX512F (which is true of the actual AVX512 features).  This PR allows using the names as defined by LLVM, which matches Intel documentation.

A future PR should change the `std::arch` intrinsics to use these names, and finally remove these aliases from rustc.

For the next commit, `FunctionCx::codegen_*_terminator` need to take a
`&mut Bx` instead of consuming a `Bx`. This triggers a cascade of
similar changes across multiple functions. The resulting code is more
concise and replaces many `&mut bx` expressions with `bx`.

I copied the debuginfo implementation (first commit) from `@eddyb's` own SROA PR.

This pass replaces plain field accesses by simple locals when possible.
To be eligible, the replaced locals:
- must not be enums or unions;
- must not be used whole;
- must not have their address taken.

The storage and deinit statements are duplicated on each created local.

Users report an AV at runtime of the compiled binary when using lld and ThinLTO on windows-msvc. The AV occurs when accessing a static value which is defined in one crate but used in another. Based on the disassembly of the cross-crate use, it appears that the use is not correctly linked with the definition and is instead assigned a garbage pointer value.

If we look at the symbol tables for each crates' obj file, we can see what is happening:

29dc08307d llvm: dwo only emitted when object code emitted
`CompiledModule` should not think a DWARF object was emitted when a
bitcode-only compilation has happened, this can confuse archive file
creation (which expects to create an archive containing non-existent dwo
files).

LLVM 16: Update RISCV data layout

The RISCV data layout was changed in 974e2e690b.

This updates all `riscv64*` targets, though I don't really know what the difference between the `gc` and `imac` ones is.

Passes `x test codegen` at LLVM head and with the currently bundled LLVM version. Without this patch, some tests fail with:

LLVM 16: Switch to using MemoryEffects

This adapts the compiler to the changes required by 304f1d59ca.

AFAICT, `WriteOnly` isn't used by the compiler, all `ReadNone` uses were migrated and the remaining use of `ReadOnly` is only for function parameters.

To simplify the FFI, this PR uses an enum to represent `MemoryEffects` across the FFI boundary, which then gets mapped to the matching static factory method when constructing the attribute.

Fixes #103961.

56074b5231 Rewrite implementation of #[alloc_error_handler]
The new implementation doesn't use weak lang items and instead changes
`#[alloc_error_handler]` to an attribute macro just like
`#[global_allocator]`.

The attribute will generate the `__rg_oom` function which is called by
the compiler-generated `__rust_alloc_error_handler`. If no `__rg_oom`
function is defined in any crate then the compiler shim will call
`__rdl_oom` in the alloc crate which will simply panic.

This also fixes link errors with `-C link-dead-code` with
`default_alloc_error_handler`: `__rg_oom` was previously defined in the
alloc crate and would attempt to reference the `oom` lang item, even if
it didn't exist. This worked as long as `__rg_oom` was excluded from
linking since it was not called.

This is a prerequisite for the stabilization of
`default_alloc_error_handler` (#102318).

9110d925d0 Remove -Ztime option.
The compiler currently has `-Ztime` and `-Ztime-passes`. I've used
`-Ztime-passes` for years but only recently learned about `-Ztime`.

What's the difference? Let's look at the `-Zhelp` output:
```
  -Z        time=val -- measure time of rustc processes (default: no)
  -Z time-passes=val -- measure time of each rustc pass (default: no)
```
The `-Ztime-passes` description is clear, but the `-Ztime` one is less so.
Sounds like it measures the time for the entire process?

No. The real difference is that `-Ztime-passes` prints out info about passes,
and `-Ztime` does the same, but only for a subset of those passes. More
specifically, there is a distinction in the profiling code between a "verbose
generic activity" and an "extra verbose generic activity". `-Ztime-passes`
prints both kinds, while `-Ztime` only prints the first one. (It took me
a close reading of the source code to determine this difference.)

In practice this distinction has low value. Perhaps in the past the "extra
verbose" output was more voluminous, but now that we only print stats for a
pass if it exceeds 5ms or alters the RSS, `-Ztime-passes` is less spammy. Also,
a lot of the "extra verbose" cases are for individual lint passes, and you need
to also use `-Zno-interleave-lints` to see those anyway.

Therefore, this commit removes `-Ztime` and the associated machinery. One thing
to note is that the existing "extra verbose" activities all have an extra
string argument, so the commit adds the ability to accept an extra argument to
the "verbose" activities.

resolve error when attempting to link a universal library on macOS

Previously attempting to link universal libraries into libraries (but not binaries) would produce an error that "File too small to be an archive". This works around this by invoking `lipo -thin` to extract a library for the target platform when passed a univeral library.

Fixes #55235

It's worth acknowledging that this implementation is kind of a horrible hack. Unfortunately I don't know how to do anything better, hopefully this PR will be a jumping off point.

Declare `main` as visibility hidden on targets that default to hidden.

On targets with `default_hidden_visibility` set, which is currrently just WebAssembly, declare the generated `main` function with visibility hidden. This makes it consistent with clang's WebAssembly target, where `main` is just a user function that gets the same visibility as any other user function, which is hidden on WebAssembly unless explicitly overridden.

This will help simplify use cases which in the future may want to automatically wasm-export all visibility-"default" symbols. `main` isn't intended to be wasm-exported, and marking it hidden prevents it from being wasm-exported in that scenario.

Remove support for legacy PM

This removes support for optimizing with LLVM's legacy pass manager, as well as the unstable `-Znew-llvm-pass-manager` option. We have been defaulting to the new PM since LLVM 13 (except for s390x that waited for 14), and LLVM 15 removed support altogether. The only place we still use the legacy PM is for writing the output file, just like `llc` does.

This has been tested on mips-unknown-linux-musl with a target-cpu that is >= MIPS32 5 and `target-features=+virt`. The example was checked in a disassembler to ensure the correct assembly sequence was being generated using the virtualization instructions.

* MIPS is missing from [the Rust reference CPU feature lists](https://doc.rust-lang.org/reference/attributes/codegen.html#available-features)

In this PR, a new -Z option `inline-llvm` is added in order to be able to turn on/off LLVM inlining.

The capability of turning on/off inlining in LLVM backend is needed for testing performance implications of using recently enabled inlining in rustc's frontend (with -Z inline-mir=yes option, #91743). It would be interesting to see the performance effect using rustc's frontend inlining only without LLVM inlining enabled. Currently LLVM is still doing inlining no mater what value inline-mir is set to. With the option `inline-llvm` being added in this PR, user can turn off LLVM inlining by using `-Z inline-llvm=no` option (the default of inline-llvm is 'yes', LLVM inlining enabled).

Move the cast_float_to_int fallback code to GCC

Now that we require at least LLVM 13, that codegen backend is always
using its intrinsic `fptosi.sat` and `fptoui.sat` conversions, so it

needs it, so we can move all of that code down there.

e4bf113027 Box CastTarget within PassMode.
Because `PassMode::Cast` is by far the largest variant, but is
relatively rare.

This requires making `PassMode` not impl `Copy`, and `Clone` is no
longer necessary. This causes lots of sigil adjusting, but nothing very
notable.

10270f4b44 Add pointer masking convenience functions
This commit adds the following functions all of which have a signature
`pointer, usize -> pointer`:
- `<*mut T>::mask`
- `<*const T>::mask`
- `intrinsics::ptr_mask`

These functions are equivalent to `.map_addr(|a| a & mask)` but they
utilize `llvm.ptrmask` llvm intrinsic.

147032a618 Move the cast_float_to_int fallback code to GCC
Now that we require at least LLVM 13, that codegen backend is always
using its intrinsic `fptosi.sat` and `fptoui.sat` conversions, so it
doesn't need the manual implementation. However, the GCC backend still
needs it, so we can move all of that code down there.

Add support for generating unique profraw files by default when using `-C instrument-coverage`

Currently, enabling the rustc flag `-C instrument-coverage` instruments the given crate and by default uses the naming scheme `default.profraw` for any instrumented profile files generated during the execution of a binary linked against this crate. This leads to multiple binaries being executed overwriting one another and causing only the last executable run to contain actual coverage results.

This can be overridden by manually setting the environment variable `LLVM_PROFILE_FILE` to use a unique naming scheme.

This PR adds a change to add support for a reasonable default for rustc to use when enabling coverage instrumentation similar to how the Rust compiler treats generating these same `profraw` files when PGO is enabled.

The new naming scheme is set to `default_%m_%p.profraw` to ensure the uniqueness of each file being generated using [LLVMs special pattern strings](https://clang.llvm.org/docs/SourceBasedCodeCoverage.html#running-the-instrumented-program).

Today the compiler sets the default for PGO `profraw` files to `default_%m.profraw` to ensure a unique file for each run. The same can be done for the instrumented profile files generated via the `-C instrument-coverage` flag as well which LLVM has API support for.

debuginfo: Generalize C++-like encoding for enums.

The updated encoding should be able to handle niche layouts where more than one variant has fields (as introduced in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/94075).

The new encoding is more uniform as there is no structural difference between direct-tag, niche-tag, and no-tag layouts anymore. The only difference between those cases is that the "dataful" variant in a niche-tag enum will have a `(start, end)` pair denoting the tag range instead of a single value.

The new encoding now also supports 128-bit tags, which occur in at least some standard library types. These tags are represented as `u64` pairs so that debuggers (which don't always have support for 128-bit integers) can reliably deal with them. The downside is that this adds quite a bit of complexity to the encoding and especially to the corresponding NatVis.

The new encoding seems to increase the size of (x86_64-pc-windows-msvc) debuginfo by 10-15%. The size of binaries is not affected (release builds were built with `-Cdebuginfo=2`, numbers are in kilobytes):

89582e8193 Pass +atomics-32 feature for thumbv6m target
https://reviews.llvm.org/D120026 changed atomics on thumbv6m to
use libatomic, to ensure that atomic load/store are compatible with
atomic RMW/CAS. However, Rust wants to expose only load/store
without libcalls.

https://reviews.llvm.org/D130480 added support for this behind
the +atomics-32 target feature, so enable that feature.

While we're here, we also emit allocator attributes on
__rust_alloc_zeroed. This should allow LLVM to perform more
optimizations for zeroed blocks, and probably fixes #90032. [This
comment](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/24194#issuecomment-308791157)
mentions "weird UB-like behaviour with bitvec iterators in
rustc_data_structures" so we may need to back this change out if things
go wrong.

The new test cases require LLVM 15, so we copy them into LLVM
14-supporting versions, which we can delete when we drop LLVM 14.

Enable raw-dylib for bin crates

Fixes #93842

When `raw-dylib` is used in a `bin` crate, we need to collect all of the `raw-dylib` functions, generate the import library and add that to the linker command line.

I also changed the tests so that 1) the C++ dlls are created after the Rust dlls, thus there is no chance of accidentally using them in the Rust linking process and 2) disabled generating import libraries when building with MSVC.

Add support for LLVM ShadowCallStack.

LLVMs ShadowCallStack provides backward edge control flow integrity protection by using a separate shadow stack to store and retrieve a function's return address.

LLVM currently only supports this for AArch64 targets. The x18 register is used to hold the pointer to the shadow stack, and therefore this only works on ABIs which reserve x18. Further details are available in the [LLVM ShadowCallStack](https://clang.llvm.org/docs/ShadowCallStack.html) docs.

This implements the scheme discussed in https://github.com/rust-lang/unsafe-code-guidelines/issues/338: vtable pointers should be considered entirely opaque and not even readable by Rust code, similar to function pointers.

- We have a new kind of `GlobalAlloc` that symbolically refers to a vtable.
- Miri uses that kind of allocation when generating a vtable.
- The codegen backends, upon encountering such an allocation, call `vtable_allocation` to obtain an actually dataful allocation for this vtable.
- We need new intrinsics to obtain the size and align from a vtable (for some `ptr::metadata` APIs), since direct accesses are UB now.

I had to touch quite a bit of code that I am not very familiar with, so some of this might not make much sense...

Allow to disable thinLTO buffer to support lto-embed-bitcode lld feature

This change is to fix issue (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/84395) in which passing "-lto-embed-bitcode=optimized" to lld when linking rust code via linker-plugin-lto doesn't produce the expected result.

Instead of emitting a single unified module into a llvmbc section of the linked elf, it emits multiple submodules.
This is caused because rustc emits the BC modules after running llvm `createWriteThinLTOBitcodePass` pass.
Which in turn triggers a thinLTO linkage and causes the said issue.

This patch allows via compiler flag (-Cemit-thin-lto=<bool>) to select between running `createWriteThinLTOBitcodePass` and `createBitcodeWriterPass`.
Note this pattern of selecting between those 2 passes is common inside of LLVM code.
The default is to match the old behavior.

Only compile #[used] as llvm.compiler.used for ELF targets

This returns `#[used]` to how it worked prior to the LLVM 13 update. The intention is not that this is a stable promise.

I'll add tests later today. The tests will test things that we don't actually promise, though.

It's a deliberately small patch, mostly comments. And assuming it's reviewed and lands in time, IMO it should at least be considered for uplifting to beta (so that it can be in 1.59), as the change broke many crates in the ecosystem, even if they are relying on behavior that is not guaranteed.

# Background

LLVM has two ways of preventing removal of an unused variable: `llvm.compiler.used`, which must be present in object files, but allows the linker to remove the value, and `llvm.used` which is supposed to apply to the linker as well, if possible.

Prior to LLVM 13, `llvm.used` and `llvm.compiler.used` were the same on ELF targets, although they were different elsewhere. Prior to our update to LLVM 13, we compiled `#[used]` using `llvm.used` unconditionally, even though we only ever promised behavior like `llvm.compiler.used`.

In LLVM 13, ELF targets gained some support for preventing linker removal of `llvm.used` via the SHF_RETAIN section flag. This has some compatibility issues though: Concretely: some older versions `ld.gold` (specifically ones prior to v2.36, released in Jan 2021) had a bug where it would fail to place a `#[used] #[link_section = ".init_array"]` static in between `__init_array_start`/`__init_array_end`, leading to code that does this failing to run a static constructor. This is technically not a thing we guarantee will work, is a common use case, and is needed in `libstd` (for example, to get access to `std::env::args()` even if Rust does not control `main`, such as when in a `cdylib` crate).

As a result, when updating to LLVM 13, we unconditionally switched to using `llvm.compiler.used`, which mirror the guarantees we make for `#[used]` and doesn't require the latest ld.gold. Unfortunately, this happened to break quite a bit of things in the ecosystem, as non-ELF targets had come to rely on `#[used]` being slightly stronger. In particular, there are cases where it will even break static constructors on these targets[^initinit] (and in fact, breaks way more use cases, as Mach-O uses special sections as an interface to the OS/linker/loader in many places).

As a result, we only switch to `llvm.compiler.used` on ELF[^elfish] targets. The rationale here is:

1. It is (hopefully) identical to the semantics we used prior to the LLVM13 update as prior to that update we unconditionally used `llvm.used`, but on ELF `llvm.used` was the same as `llvm.compiler.used`.

2. It seems to be how Clang compiles this, and given that they have similar (but stronger) compatibility promises, that makes sense.

[^initinit]: For Mach-O targets: It is not always guaranteed that `__DATA,__mod_init_func` is a GC root if it does not have the `S_MOD_INIT_FUNC_POINTERS` flag which we cannot add. In most cases, when ld64 transformed this section into `__DATA_CONST,__mod_init_func` it gets applied, but it's not clear that that is intentional (let alone guaranteed), and the logic is complex enough that it probably happens sometimes, and people in the wild report it occurring.

[^elfish]: Actually, there's not a great way to tell if it's ELF, so I've approximated it.

This is pretty ad-hoc and hacky! We probably should have a firmer set of guarantees here, but this change should relax the pressure on coming up with that considerably, returning it to previous levels.

Revert "Work around invalid DWARF bugs for fat LTO"

Since September, the toolchain has not been generating reliable DWARF
information for static variables when LTO is on. This has affected
projects in the embedded space where the use of LTO is typical. In our
case, it has kept us from bumping past the 2021-09-22 nightly toolchain
lest our debugger break. This has been a pretty dramatic regression for
people using debuggers and static variables. See #90357 for more info
and a repro case.

This commit is a mechanical revert of
d5de680e20 from PR #89041, which caused
the issue. (Note on that PR that the commit's author has requested it be
reverted.)

I have locally verified that this fixes #90357 by restoring the
functionality of both the repro case I posted on that bug, and debugger
behavior on real programs. There do not appear to be test cases for this
in the toolchain; if I've missed them, point me at 'em and I'll update
them.

724c91234d rustc: add ability to output regular LTO bitcode modules
Adding the option to control from rustc CLI
if the resulted ".o" bitcode module files are with
thinLTO info or regular LTO info.

Allows using "-lto-embed-bitcode=optimized" during linkage
correctly.

a422b42159 don't allow ZST in ScalarInt
There are several indications that we should not ZST as a ScalarInt:
- We had two ways to have ZST valtrees, either an empty `Branch` or a `Leaf` with a ZST in it.
  `ValTree::zst()` used the former, but the latter could possibly arise as well.
- Likewise, the interpreter had `Immediate::Uninit` and `Immediate::Scalar(Scalar::ZST)`.
- LLVM codegen already had to special-case ZST ScalarInt.

So instead add new ZST variants to those types that did not have other variants
which could be used for this purpose.

1e0ad0c1d4 Implement support for DWARF version 5.
DWARF version 5 brings a number of improvements over version 4. Quoting from
the announcement [1]:

> Version 5 incorporates improvements in many areas: better data compression,
> separation of debugging data from executable files, improved description of
> macros and source files, faster searching for symbols, improved debugging
> optimized code, as well as numerous improvements in functionality and
> performance.

On platforms where DWARF version 5 is supported (Linux, primarily), this commit
adds support for it behind a new `-Z dwarf-version=5` flag.

Work around llvm 12's memory ordering restrictions.

Older llvm has the pre-C++17 restriction on success and failure memory ordering, requiring the former to be at least as strong as the latter. So, for llvm 12, this upgrades the success ordering to a stronger one if necessary.

rustc_target: Remove some redundant target properties

`is_like_emscripten` is equivalent to `os == "emscripten"`, so it's removed.
`is_like_fuchsia` is equivalent to `os == "fuchsia"`, so it's removed.
`is_like_osx` also falls into the same category and is equivalent to `vendor == "apple"`, but it's commonly used so I kept it as is for now.

`is_like_(solaris,windows,wasm)` are combinations of different operating systems or architectures (see compiler/rustc_target/src/spec/tests/tests_impl.rs) so they are also kept as is.

I think `is_like_wasm` (and maybe `is_like_osx`) are sufficiently closed sets, so we can remove these fields as well and replace them with methods like `fn is_like_wasm() { arch == "wasm32" || arch == "wasm64" }`.
On other hand, `is_like_solaris` and `is_like_windows` are sufficiently open and I can imagine custom targets introducing other values for `os`.
This is kind of a gray area.

Support lint expectations for `--force-warn` lints (RFC 2383)

Rustc has a `--force-warn` flag, which overrides lint level attributes and forces the diagnostics to always be warn. This means, that for lint expectations, the diagnostic can't be suppressed as usual. This also means that the expectation would not be fulfilled, even if a lint had been triggered in the expected scope.

This PR now also tracks the expectation ID in the `ForceWarn` level. I've also made some minor adjustments, to possibly catch more bugs and make the whole implementation more robust.

This will probably conflict with https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/97718. That PR should ideally be reviewed and merged first. The conflict itself will be trivial to fix.

Add metadata generation for vtables when using VFE
This adds the typeid and `vcall_visibility` metadata to vtables when the
-Cvirtual-function-elimination flag is set.

The typeid is generated in the same way as for the
`llvm.type.checked.load` intrinsic from the trait_ref.

The offset that is added to the typeid is always 0. This is because LLVM
assumes that vtables are constructed according to the definition in the
Itanium ABI. This includes an "address point" of the vtable. In C++ this
is the offset in the vtable where information for RTTI is placed. Since
there is no RTTI information in Rust's vtables, this "address point" is
always 0. This "address point" in combination with the offset passed to
the `llvm.type.checked.load` intrinsic determines the final function
that should be loaded from the vtable in the
`WholeProgramDevirtualization` pass in LLVM. That's why the
`llvm.type.checked.load` intrinsics are generated with the typeid of the
trait, rather than with that of the function that is called. This
matches what `clang` does for C++.

The vcall_visibility metadata depends on three factors:

1. LTO level: Currently this is always fat LTO, because LLVM only
   supports this optimization with fat LTO.
2. Visibility of the trait: If the trait is publicly visible, VFE
   can only act on its vtables after linking.
3. Number of CGUs: if there is more than one CGU, also vtables with
   restricted visibility could be seen outside of the CGU, so VFE can
   only act on them after linking.

To reflect this, there are three visibility levels: Public, LinkageUnit,
and TranslationUnit.

Add llvm.type.checked.load intrinsic
Add the intrinsic

declare {i8*, i1} @llvm.type.checked.load(i8* %ptr, i32 %offset, metadata %type)

This is used in the VFE optimization when lowering loading functions
from vtables to LLVM IR. The `metadata` is used to map the function to
all vtables this function could belong to. This ensures that functions
from vtables that might be used somewhere won't get removed.

### Tier 3 Target Requirements

Adds support for Apple WatchOS compile targets.

Below are details on how this target meets the requirements for tier 3:

>   tier 3 target must have a designated developer or developers (the "target maintainers") on record to be CCed when issues arise regarding the target. (The mechanism to track and CC such developers may evolve over time.)

`@deg4uss3r` has volunteered to be the target maintainer. I am also happy to help if a second maintainer is required.

> Targets must use naming consistent with any existing targets; for instance, a target for the same CPU or OS as an existing Rust target should use the same name for that CPU or OS. Targets should normally use the same names and naming conventions as used elsewhere in the broader ecosystem beyond Rust (such as in other toolchains), unless they have a very good reason to diverge. Changing the name of a target can be highly disruptive, especially once the target reaches a higher tier, so getting the name right is important even for a tier 3 target.

Uses the same naming as the LLVM target, and the same convention as other Apple targets.

> Target names should not introduce undue confusion or ambiguity unless absolutely necessary to maintain ecosystem compatibility. For example, if the name of the target makes people extremely likely to form incorrect beliefs about what it targets, the name should be changed or augmented to disambiguate it.

I don't believe there is any ambiguity here.

> Tier 3 targets may have unusual requirements to build or use, but must not create legal issues or impose onerous legal terms for the Rust project or for Rust developers or users.

I don't see any legal issues here.

> The target must not introduce license incompatibilities.
> Anything added to the Rust repository must be under the standard Rust license (MIT OR Apache-2.0).

Use --target=<target> option to cross compile, just like any target. Tests can be run using the WatchOS simulator (see https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/running-your-app-in-the-simulator-or-on-a-device).

> Tier 3 targets must not impose burden on the authors of pull requests, or other developers in the community, to maintain the target. In particular, do not post comments (automated or manual) on a PR that derail or suggest a block on the PR based on a tier 3 target. I don't foresee this being a problem.

No other targets should be affected by the pull request.

This change causes passes specified in -Cpasses= to be applied
only during pre-link optimization, not during LTO. This avoids
such passes running multiple times, which they may not be
designed for.
