Rollup merge of #131913 - jieyouxu:only_debug_assertions, r=onur-ozkan
Add `{ignore,needs}-{rustc,std}-debug-assertions` directive support

Add `{ignore,needs}-{rustc,std}-debug-assertions` compiletest directives and retire the old `{ignore,only}-debug` directives. The old `{ignore,only}-debug` directives were ambiguous because you could have std built with debug assertions but rustc not built with debug assertions or vice versa. If we want to support the use case of controlling test run based on if rustc was built with debug assertions, then having `{ignore,only}-debug` will be very confusing.

Tweak detection of multiple crate versions to be more encompassing

Previously, we only emitted the additional context if the type was in the same crate as the trait that appeared multiple times in the dependency tree. Now, we look at all traits looking for two with the same name in different crates with the same crate number, and we are more flexible looking for the types involved. This will work even if the type that implements the wrong trait version is from a different crate entirely.

Basic inline assembly support for SPARC and SPARC64

This implements asm_experimental_arch (tracking issue https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/93335) for SPARC and SPARC64.

This PR includes:

- General-purpose registers `r[0-31]` (`reg` register class, LLVM/GCC constraint `r`)
  Supported types: i8, i16, i32, i64 (SPARC64-only)
  Aliases: `g[0-7]` (`r[0-7]`), `o[0-7]` (`r[8-15]`), `l[0-7]` (`r[16-23]`), `i[0-7]` (`r[24-31]`)
- `y` register (clobber-only, needed for clobber_abi)
- preserves_flags: Integer condition codes (`icc`, `xcc`) and floating-point condition codes (`fcc*`)

The following are *not* included:

- 64-bit integer support on SPARC-V8+'s global or out registers (`g[0-7]`, `o[0-7]`): GCC's `h` constraint (it seems that there is no corresponding constraint in LLVM?)
- Floating-point registers (LLVM/GCC constraint `e`/`f`):
  I initially tried to implement this, but postponed it for now because there seemed to be several parts in LLVM that behaved differently than in the LangRef's description.
- clobber_abi: Support for floating-point registers is needed.

The approach to accomplish this is a HACK, and we'd want a better way to do this. I believe that moving E0277 to be a structured diagnostic would help in that regard.

03383ad102 Initialize channel Blocks directly on the heap
The channel's `Block::new` was causing a stack overflow because it held
32 item slots, instantiated on the stack before moving to `Box::new`.
The 32x multiplier made modestly-large item sizes untenable.

That block is now initialized directly on the heap.

Remove the `wasm32-wasi` target from rustc

This commit is the final step in the journey of renaming the historical `wasm32-wasi` target in the Rust compiler to `wasm32-wasip1`. Various steps in this journey so far have been:

* 2023-04-03: rust-lang/compiler-team#607 - initial proposal for this rename
* 2024-11-27: rust-lang/compiler-team#695 - amended schedule/procedure for rename
* 2024-01-29: rust-lang/rust#120468 - initial introduction of `wasm32-wasip1`
* 2024-06-18: rust-lang/rust#126662 - warn on usage of `wasm32-wasi`
* 2024-11-08: this PR - remove the `wasm32-wasi` target

The full transition schedule is in [this comment][comment] and is summarized with:

* 2024-05-02: Rust 1.78 released with `wasm32-wasip1` target
* 2024-09-05: Rust 1.81 released warning on usage of `wasm32-wasi`
* 2025-01-09: Rust 1.84 to be released without the `wasm32-wasi` target

This means that support on stable for the replacement target of `wasm32-wasip1` has currently been available for 6 months. Users have already seen warnings on stable for 2 months about usage of `wasm32-wasi` and stable users have another 2 months of warnings before the target is removed from stable.

This commit is intended to be the final step in this transition so the source tree should no longer mention `wasm32-wasi` except in historical reference to the older name of the `wasm32-wasip1` target.

Add a new `wide-arithmetic` feature for WebAssembly

This commit adds a new rustc target feature named `wide-arithmetic` for WebAssembly targets. This corresponds to the [wide-arithmetic] proposal for WebAssembly which adds new instructions catered towards accelerating integer arithmetic larger than 64-bits. This proposal to WebAssembly is not standard yet so this new feature is flagged as an unstable target feature. Additionally Rust's LLVM version doesn't support this new feature yet since support will first be added in LLVM 20, so the feature filtering logic for LLVM is updated to handle this.

I'll also note that I'm not currently planning to add wasm-specific intrinsics to `std::arch::wasm32` at this time. The currently proposed instructions are all accessible through `i128` or `u128`-based operations which Rust already supports, so intrinsic shouldn't be necessary to get access to these new instructions.

I played around a bit with a macro to make const_eval_select invocations look a bit nicer and avoid repeating the argument lists. Here's what I got. What do you think?

I didn't apply this everywhere yet because I wanted to gather feedback first.

The second commit moves the macros from https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/132542 into a more sensible place. It didn't seem worth its own PR and would conflict with this PR if done separately.

Properly suggest `E::assoc` when we encounter `E::Variant::assoc`

Use the right span when encountering an enum variant followed by an associated item so we don't lose the associated item in the resulting code.

Do not suggest the thing twice, once as a removal of the associated item and a second time as a typo suggestion.

Currently, a suggestion for adding a let binding won't be shown if we suggest fixing a typo. This changes that behavior to always show both, if possible. Essentially, this turns the suggestion from

The original behavior only shows the suggestion for a let binding if a typo suggestion wasn't already displayed. However, this falls apart in the cases like the one above where we have multiple similar variables. I don't think it makes sense to hide this suggestion if there's a similar variable, since that defeats the purpose of this suggestion in that case (it's meant to help those coming from languages like Python).

Add a new 'pc' option to -Z branch-protection for aarch64 that enables the use of PC as a diversifier in PAC branch protection code.

When the pauth-lr target feature is enabled in combination with -Z branch-protection=pac-ret,pc, the new 9.5-a instructions (pacibsppc, retaasppc, etc) will be generated.

mark some target features as 'forbidden' so they cannot be (un)set with -Ctarget-feature

The context for this is https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/116344: some target features change the way floats are passed between functions. Changing those target features is unsound as code compiled for the same target may now use different ABIs.

So this introduces a new concept of "forbidden" target features (on top of the existing "stable " and "unstable" categories), and makes it a hard error to (un)set such a target feature. For now, the x86 and ARM feature `soft-float` is on that list. We'll have to make some effort to collect more relevant features, and similar features from other targets, but that can happen after the basic infrastructure for this landed. (These features are being collected in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/131799.)

I've made this a warning for now to give people some time to speak up if this would break something.

Remove unnecessary pub enum glob-imports from `rustc_middle::ty`

We used to have an idiom in the compiler where we'd prefix or suffix all the variants of an enum, for example `BoundRegionKind`, with something like `Br`, and then *glob-import* that enum variant directly.

`@noratrieb` brought this up, and I think that it's easier to read when we just use the normal style `EnumName::Variant`.

This PR is a bit large, but it's just naming.

The only somewhat opinionated change that this PR does is rename `BorrowKind::Imm` to `BorrowKind::Immutable` and same for the other variants. I think these enums are used sparingly enough that the extra length is fine.

I realized while looking on the docs.rs page of the `sysinfo` crate that the coverage numbers displayed were wrong:

I realized that it was because `--show-coverage --output-format=json` was relying on the same logic as the JSON output for the doc generation whereas it should not. I fixed it by changing the API for querying `is_json` a bit.

The underlying issue is that JSON output format is stripping reexports of items from private modules.

remove support for extern-block const intrinsics

This converts all const-callable intrinsics into the "new" form of a regular `fn` with `#[rustc_intrinsic]` attribute. That simplifies some of the logic since those functions can be marked `const fn` like regular functions, so intrinsics no longer need a special case to be considered const-callable at all.

I also added a new attribute `#[rustc_const_stable_intrinsic]` to mark an intrinsic as being ready to be exposed on stable. Previously we used the `#[rustc_const_stable_indirect]` attribute for that, but that attribute had a dual role -- when used on a regular function, it is an entirely safe marker to make this function part of recursive const stability, but on an intrinsic it is a trusted marker requiring special care. It's not great for the same attribute to be sometimes fully checked and safe, and sometimes trusted and requiring special care, so I split this into two attributes.

This also fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/122652 by accepting intrinsics as const-stable if they have a fallback body that is recursively const-stable.

The library changes are best reviewed with whitespace hidden.

Add a few more tests for the `improper_ctypes` lint as found with the [varnish-rs](https://github.com/gquintard/varnish-rs) project.

This follows up on #116831, fixed in #116863 by ``@workingjubilee`` - I have been seeing these fail with the bindgen-generated non-exhaustive enums inside other structs. Seems the issue does not exist in the primary branch, so this PR just makes sure more cases are covered for the future.

Support clobber_abi and vector registers (clobber-only) in PowerPC inline assembly

This supports `clobber_abi` which is one of the requirements of stabilization mentioned in #93335.

This basically does a similar thing I did in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/130630 to implement `clobber_abi` for s390x, but for powerpc/powerpc64/powerpc64le.
- This also supports vector registers (as `vreg`) as clobber-only, which need to support clobbering of them to implement `clobber_abi`.
- `vreg` should be able to accept `#[repr(simd)]` types as input/output if the unstable `altivec` target feature is enabled, but `core::arch::{powerpc,powerpc64}` vector types, `#[repr(simd)]`, and `core::simd` are all unstable, so the fact that this is currently a clobber-only should not be considered a blocker of clobber_abi implementation or stabilization. So I have not implemented it in this PR.
  - See https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/131551 (which is based on this PR) for a PR to implement this.
  - (I'm not sticking to whether that PR should be a separate PR or part of this PR, so I can merge that PR into this PR if needed.)

If I understand the above four ABI documentations correctly, except for the PPC32 SysV's VR (Vector Registers) and 32-bit AIX (currently not supported by rustc)'s r13, there does not appear to be important differences in terms of implementing `clobber_abi`:
- The above four ABIs are consistent about FPR (0-13: volatile, 14-31: nonvolatile), CR (0-1,5-7: volatile, 2-4: nonvolatile), XER (volatile), and CTR (volatile).
- As for GPR, only the registers we are treating as reserved are slightly different
  - r0, r3-r12 are volatile
  - r1(sp, reserved), r14-31 are nonvolatile
  - r2(reserved) is TOC pointer in PPC64 ELF/AIX, system-reserved register in PPC32 SysV (AFAIK used as thread pointer in Linux/BSDs)
  - r13(reserved for non-32-bit-AIX) is thread pointer in PPC64 ELF, small data area pointer register in PPC32 SysV, "reserved under 64-bit environment; not restored across system calls[^r13]" in AIX)
- As for FPSCR, volatile in PPC64 ELFv1/AIX, some fields are volatile only in certain situations (rest are volatile) in PPC32 SysV/PPC64 ELFv2.
- As for VR (Vector Registers), it is not mentioned in PPC32 SysV, v0-v19 are volatile in both in PPC64 ELF/AIX, v20-v31 are nonvolatile in PPC64 ELF, reserved or nonvolatile depending on the ABI ([vec-extabi vs vec-default in LLVM](https://reviews.llvm.org/D89684), we are [using vec-extabi](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/131341#discussion_r1797693299)) in AIX:

We are currently treating r1-r2, r13 (non-32-bit-AIX), r29-r31, LR, CTR, and VRSAVE as reserved.
We are currently not processing anything about FPSCR and VSCR, but I feel those are things that should be processed by `preserves_flags` rather than `clobber_abi` if we need to do something about them. (However, PPCRegisterInfo.td in LLVM does not seem to define anything about them.)

Suggest creating unary tuples when types don't match a trait

When you want to have a variadic function, a common workaround to implement this is to create a trait and then implement that trait for various tuples. For example in `pyo3` there exists
```rust
/// Calls the object with only positional arguments.
pub fn call1(&self, args: impl IntoPy<Py<PyTuple>>) -> PyResult<&PyAny> {
   ...
}
```

with various impls like
```rust
impl<A: IntoPy<PyObject> IntoPy<Py<PyAny>> for (A,)
impl<A: IntoPy<PyObject, B: IntoPy<PyObject> IntoPy<Py<PyAny>> for (A, B)
... etc
```

This means that if you want to call the method with a single item you have to create a unary tuple, like `(x,)`, rather than just `x`.

This PR implements a suggestion to do that, if applicable.

This PR changes the text of library feature errors for using unstable or body-unstable items. Displaying library feature names in backticks is consistent with other diagnostics (e.g. those from `rustc_passes`) and with the `reason`s on unstable attributes in the library. Additionally, this simplifies diagnostics when supporting multiple unstable attributes on items (see #131824) since `DiagSymbolList` also displays symbols using backticks.

Register `~const` preds for `Deref` adjustments in HIR typeck

This doesn't *do* anything yet, since `Deref` and `DerefMut` aren't constified, and we explicitly don't error on calling non-const trait methods in HIR yet -- presumably that will wait until std is re-constified. But I'm confident this logic is correct, and this (afaict?) is the only major hole left in enforcing `~const` in HIR typeck.

c049cc17f3 Remove the wasm32-wasi target from rustc
This commit is the final step in the journey of renaming the historical
`wasm32-wasi` target in the Rust compiler to `wasm32-wasip1`. Various
steps in this journey so far have been:

* 2023-04-03: rust-lang/compiler-team#607 - initial proposal for this rename
* 2024-11-27: rust-lang/compiler-team#695 - amended schedule/procedure for rename
* 2024-01-29: rust-lang/rust#120468 - initial introduction of `wasm32-wasip1`
* 2024-06-18: rust-lang/rust#126662 - warn on usage of `wasm32-wasi`
* 2024-11-08: this PR - remove the `wasm32-wasi` target

The full transition schedule is in [this comment][comment] and is
summarized with:

* 2024-05-02: Rust 1.78 released with `wasm32-wasip1` target
* 2024-09-05: Rust 1.81 released warning on usage of `wasm32-wasi`
* 2025-01-09: Rust 1.84 to be released without the `wasm32-wasi` target

This means that support on stable for the replacement target of
`wasm32-wasip1` has currently been available for 6 months. Users have
already seen warnings on stable for 2 months about usage of
`wasm32-wasi` and stable users have another 2 months of warnings before
the target is removed from stable.

This commit is intended to be the final step in this transition so the
source tree should no longer mention `wasm32-wasi` except in historical
reference to the older name of the `wasm32-wasip1` target.

Port most of `--print=target-cpus` to Rust

The logic and formatting needed by `--print=target-cpus` has historically been carried out in C++ code. Originally it used `printf` to write directly to the console, but later it switched over to writing to a `std::ostringstream` and then passing its buffer to a callback function pointer.

This PR replaces that C++ code with a very simple function that writes a list of CPU names to a `&RustString`, with the rest of the logic and formatting being handled by ordinary safe Rust code.

People often parse `-vV` output to get to the host tuple, which is annoying to do. It's easier to just get it directly.

I called it "host-tuple" instead of "host" because it's clearer that it's just the target name. I'm open to different names, but I think this one is fine.

rustdoc: skip stability inheritance for some item kinds

For some item kinds it's incorrect to inherit their parent's stability, because they might be accessible without referring to the parent directly -- This PR removes the stability inheritance for these items and reverts their displayed stability to that before https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/130798.

Impl items, both inherent and trait impls, have a stability, but it is ignored when checking for enabled features. However, impl items are automatically unstable if they're nested inside an unstable module -- this caused the children of impl to inherit the instability and lead to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/132440.

Furthermore, for associated items only the stability of the associated item itself is checked and not that of its parent impl. This is true even for trait impls and we have [relied on this behavior in the standard library in the past](https://doc.rust-lang.org/1.37.0/std/slice/trait.SliceConcatExt.html#tymethod.concat), so these also shouldn't inherit the impl's stability.

I've also removed the stability inheritance for primitives and keywords so that viewing e.g. [the `i32` docs on `core`](https://doc.rust-lang.org/nightly/core/primitive.i32.html) will no longer show "since 1.6.0". Note that we currently don't annotate stability for the keyword docs, but if we start doing so in the future then this is probably more correct.

b7fc1a7431 Add trait diff highlighting logic and use it in E0277
When a trait is not implemented for a type, but there *is* an `impl`
for another type or different trait params, we format the output to
use highlighting in the same way that E0308 does for types.

The logic accounts for 3 cases:
- When both the type and trait in the expected predicate and the candidate are different
- When only the types are different
- When only the trait generic params are different

For each case, we use slightly different formatting and wording.

c8b76bcf58 Emit warning when calling/declaring functions with unavailable vectors.
On some architectures, vector types may have a different ABI depending
on whether the relevant target features are enabled. (The ABI when the
feature is disabled is often not specified, but LLVM implements some
de-facto ABI.)

As discussed in rust-lang/lang-team#235, this turns out to very easily
lead to unsound code.

This commit makes it a post-monomorphization future-incompat warning to
declare or call functions using those vector types in a context in which
the corresponding target features are disabled, if using an ABI for
which the difference is relevant. This ensures that these functions are
always called with a consistent ABI.

Just opening this up for vibes; it's not done yet. I'd still like to make this suggestable in a few more cases before merge:
- [x] Try to annotate `_` -> `()`
- [x] Try to annotate local variables if they're un-annotated: `let x = ...` -> `let x: () = ...`
- [x] Try to annotate the self type of a `Trait::method()` -> `<() as Trait>::method()`.

The only other case we may want to suggest is a missing turbofish, like `f()` -> `f::<()>()`. That may be possible, but seems overly annoying.

This partly addresses https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/132358; the other half of fixing that would be to make the error message a bit better, perhaps just special casing the `?` operator 🤔 I don't think I'll do that part.

This PR removes the unstable `-Zprofile` flag, which enables ”gcov-style” coverage instrumentation, along with its associated `-Zprofile-emit` configuration flag.

(The profile flag predates and is almost entirely separate from the stable `-Cinstrument-coverage` flag.)

Notably, the `-Zprofile` flag:
- Is largely untested in-tree, having only one run-make test that does not check whether its output is correct or useful.
- Has no known maintainer.
- Has seen no push towards stabilization.
- Has at least one severe regression reported in 2022 that apparently remains unaddressed.
  - #100125
- Is confusingly named, since it appears to be more about coverage than performance profiling, and has nothing to do with PGO.
- Is fundamentally limited by relying on counters auto-inserted by LLVM, with no knowledge of Rust beyond debuginfo.

Fix validation when lowering `?` trait bounds

Pass the unlowered (`rustc_hir`) polarity to `lower_poly_trait_ref`.

This allows us to actually *validate* that generic args are actually valid on `?Trait` paths. This actually regressed in #113671 because that PR changed the behavior where we were inadvertently re-lowering paths as `BoundPolarity::Positive`, which was also coincidentally the only place we were enforcing the generics on `?Trait` paths were correct.

Fix `target_os` for `mipsel-sony-psx`

Previously set to `target_os = "none"` and `target_env = "psx"` in [the PR introducing the target](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/102689/), but although the Playstation 1 is _close_ to a bare metal target in some regards, it's still very much an operating system, so we should instead set `target_os = "psx"`.

This also matches the `mipsel-sony-psp` target, which sets `target_os = "psp"`.

If there's any code out there that uses `cfg(target_env = "psx")`, they can use `cfg(any(target_os = "psx", target_env = "psx"))` until they bump their MSRV to a version where this is fully fixed.

Mark the `simplify_aggregate_to_copy` mir-opt added in #128299 as unsound as it seems to miscompile the MCVE reported in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/132353. The mir-opt can be re-enabled once this case is fixed.

This MCVE is included as a `run-pass` ui regression test in the first commit. I built the ui test with a nightly manually, and can reproduce the behavioral difference with `-C opt-level=0` and `-C opt-level=1`. Locally, this ui test will fail unless it was run on a compiler built with the second commit marking the mir-opt as unsound thus disabling it by default.

This PR **partially reverts** commit e7386b3, reversing changes made to 02b1be1. The mir-opt implementation is just marked as unsound but **not** reverted to make reland reviews easier. Test changes are **reverted if they were not pure additions**. Tests added by the original PR received `-Z unsound-mir-opts` compile-flags.

Try to point out when edition 2024 lifetime capture rules cause borrowck issues

Lifetime capture rules in 2024 are modified to capture more lifetimes, which sometimes lead to some non-local borrowck errors. This PR attempts to link these back together with a useful note pointing out the capture rule changes.

This is not a blocking concern, but I'd appreciate feedback (though, again, I'd like to stress that I don't want to block this PR on this): I'm worried about this note drowning in the sea of other diagnostics that borrowck emits. I was tempted to change the level of the note to `.span_warn` just so it would show up in a different color. Thoughts?

Make sure `type_param_predicates` resolves correctly for RPITIT

After #132194, we end up lowering the item bounds for an RPITIT in an `ItemCtxt` whose def id is the *synthetic GAT*, not the opaque type from the HIR.

This means that when we're resolving a shorthand projection like `T::Assoc`, we call the `type_param_predicates` function with the `item_def_id` of the *GAT* and not the opaque. That function operates on the HIR, and is not designed to work with the `Node::Synthetic` that gets fed for items synthesized by the compiler...

This PR reuses the trick we use elsewhere in lowering, where we intercept whether an item comes from RPITIT lowering, and forwards the query off to the correct item.

Rename `rustc_abi::Abi` to `BackendRepr`

Remove the confabulation of `rustc_abi::Abi` with what "ABI" actually means by renaming it to `BackendRepr`, and rename `Abi::Aggregate` to `BackendRepr::Memory`. The type never actually represented how things are passed, as that has to have `PassMode` considered, at minimum, but rather it just is how we represented some things to the backend. This conflation arose because LLVM, the primary backend at the time, would lower certain IR forms using certain ABIs. Even that only somewhat was true, as it broke down when one ventured significantly afield of what is described by the System V AMD64 ABI either by using different architectures, ABI-modifying IR annotations, the same architecture **with different ISA extensions enabled**, or other... unexpected delights.

Unfortunately both names are still somewhat of a misnomer right now, as people have written code for years based on this misunderstanding. Still, their original names are even moreso, and for better or worse, this backend code hasn't received as much maintenance as the rest of the compiler, lately. Actually arriving at a correct end-state will simply require us to disentangle a lot of code in order to fix, much of it pointlessly repeated in several places. Thus this is not an "actual fix", just a way to deflect further misunderstandings.

Remap impl-trait lifetimes on HIR instead of AST lowering

Current AST->HIR lowering goes out of its way to remap lifetimes for opaque types. This is complicated and leaks into upstream and downstream code.

This PR stops trying to be clever during lowering, and prefers to do this remapping during the HIR->ty lowering. The remapping computation easily fits into the bound var resolution code. Its result can be used in by `generics_of` and `hir_ty_lowering::new_opaque` to add the proper parameters and arguments.

See an example on the doc for query `opaque_captured_lifetimes`.

12dc24f460 rustdoc-search: simplify rules for generics and type params
This commit is a response to feedback on the displayed type
signatures results, by making generics act stricter.

Generics are tightened by making order significant. This means
`Vec<Allocator>` now matches only with a true vector of allocators,
instead of matching the second type param. It also makes unboxing
within generics stricter, so `Result<A, B>` only matches if `B`
is in the error type and `A` is in the success type. The top level
of the function search is unaffected.

Reject generic self types.

The RFC for arbitrary self types v2 declares that we should reject "generic" self types. This commit does so.

The definition of "generic" was unclear in the RFC, but has been explored in
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/129147
and the conclusion is that "generic" means any `self` type which is a type parameter defined on the method itself, or references to such a type.

This approach was chosen because other definitions of "generic" don't work. Specifically,
* we can't filter out generic type _arguments_, because that would filter out Rc<Self> and all the other types of smart pointer we want to support;
* we can't filter out all type params, because Self itself is a type param, and because existing Rust code depends on other type params declared on the type (as opposed to the method).

This PR decides to make a new error code for this case, instead of reusing the existing E0307 error. This makes the code a bit more complex, but it seems we have an opportunity to provide specific diagnostics for this case so we should do so.

This PR filters out generic self types whether or not the 'arbitrary self types' feature is enabled. However, it's believed that it can't have any effect on code which uses stable Rust, since there are no stable traits which can be used to indicate a valid generic receiver type, and thus it would have been impossible to write code which could trigger this new error case. It is however possible that this could break existing code which uses either of the unstable `arbitrary_self_types` or `receiver_trait` features. This breakage is intentional; as we move arbitrary self types towards stabilization we don't want to continue to support generic such types.

This PR adds lots of extra tests to arbitrary-self-from-method-substs. Most of these are ways to trigger a "type mismatch" error which 9b82580c73/compiler/rustc_hir_typeck/src/method/confirm.rs (L519) hopes can be minimized by filtering out generics in this way. We remove a FIXME from confirm.rs suggesting that we make this change. It's still possible to cause type mismatch errors, and a subsequent PR may be able to improve diagnostics in this area, but it's harder to cause these errors without contrived uses of the turbofish.

This test fails on targets without unwinding or with `--target-rustcflags=-Cpanic=abort` because the proc macro was compiled as the target, not the host. Some targets were explicitly disabled to pass CI, but these directives are more general.

* `needs-dynamic-linking` is self explanatory
* `force-host` for proc macros
* `no-prefer-dynamic` is apparently also used for proc macros

Note that `needs-unwind` can also be useful for situations other than proc macros where unwinding is necessary.

We collect item bounds from trait where clauses for *associated types*, i.e. this:

Today, with RPITITs/AFIT and return-type notation, we don't do that, i.e.:

...which fails on nightly today.

Hack out effects support for old solver

Opening this for vibes 

Turns out that a basic, somewhat incomplete implementation of host effects is achievable in the old trait solver pretty easily. This should be sufficient for us to use in the standard library itself.

Regarding incompleteness, maybe we should always treat host predicates as ambiguous in intercrate mode (at least in the old solver) to avoid any worries about accidental impl overlap or something.

Lint against getting pointers from immediately dropped temporaries

Fixes #123613

## Changes:
1. New lint: `dangling_pointers_from_temporaries`. Is a generalization of `temporary_cstring_as_ptr` for more types and more ways to get a temporary.
2. `temporary_cstring_as_ptr` is removed and marked as renamed to `dangling_pointers_from_temporaries`.
3. `clippy::temporary_cstring_as_ptr` is marked as renamed to `dangling_pointers_from_temporaries`.
4. Fixed a false positive[^fp] for when the pointer is not actually dangling because of lifetime extension for function/method call arguments.
5. `core::cell::Cell` is now `rustc_diagnostic_item = "Cell"`

f534974037 Add a new wide-arithmetic feature for WebAssembly
This commit adds a new rustc target feature named `wide-arithmetic` for
WebAssembly targets. This corresponds to the [wide-arithmetic] proposal
for WebAssembly which adds new instructions catered towards accelerating
integer arithmetic larger than 64-bits. This proposal to WebAssembly is
not standard yet so this new feature is flagged as an unstable target
feature. Additionally Rust's LLVM version doesn't support this new
feature yet since support will first be added in LLVM 20, so the
feature filtering logic for LLVM is updated to handle this.

I'll also note that I'm not currently planning to add wasm-specific
intrinsics to `std::arch::wasm32` at this time. The currently proposed
instructions are all accessible through `i128` or `u128`-based
operations which Rust already supports, so intrinsic shouldn't be
necessary to get access to these new instructions.

Remove `ObligationCause::span()` method

I think it's an incredibly confusing footgun to expose both `obligation_cause.span` and `obligation_cause.span()`. Especially because `ObligationCause::span()` (the method) seems to just be hacking around a single quirk in the way we set up obligation causes for match arms.

First commit removes the need for that hack, with only one diagnostic span changing (but IMO not really getting worse -- I'd argue that it was already confusing).

a201fab208 Tweak expand_incomplete_parse warning.
By using `token_descr`, as is done for many other errors, we can get
slightly better descriptions in error messages, e.g.
"macro expansion ignores token `let` and any following" becomes
"macro expansion ignores keyword `let` and any tokens following".

This will be more important once invisible delimiters start being
mentioned in error messages -- without this commit, that leads to error
messages such as "error at ``" because invisible delimiters are
pretty printed as an empty string.

Cleanup: Move an impl-Trait check from AST validation to AST lowering

Namely the one that rejects `impl Trait` in qself types and non-final path segments.
There's no good reason to perform this during AST validation.
We have better infrastructure in place in the AST lowerer (`ImplTraitContext`).
This shaves off a lot of code.
We now lower `impl Trait` in bad positions to `{type error}` which allows us to
remove a special case from HIR ty lowering.

Coincidentally fixes #126725. Well, it only *masks* it by passing `{type error}` to HIR analysis instead of a "bad" opaque. I was able to find a new reproducer for it. See the issue.

Replace some LLVMRust wrappers with calls to the LLVM C API

This PR removes the LLVMRust wrapper functions for getting/setting linkage and visibility, and replaces them with direct calls to the corresponding functions in LLVM's C API.

To make this convenient and sound, two pieces of supporting code have also been added:
- A simple proc-macro that derives `TryFrom<u32>` for fieldless enums
- A wrapper type for C enum values returned by LLVM functions, to ensure soundness if LLVM returns an enum value we don't know about

In a few places, the use of safe wrapper functions means that an `unsafe` block is no longer needed, so the affected code has changed its indentation level.

1819b4fa23 rustdoc: make doctest span tweak a 2024 edition change
Fixes #132203

This is a compatibility hack, because I think the new behavior is better.
When an A `include_str!` B, and B `include_str!` C, the path to C should
be resolved relative to B, not A. That's how `include!` itself works,
so that's how `include_str!` with should work.

(Big performance change) Do not run lints that cannot emit

Before this change, adding a lint was a difficult matter because it always had some overhead involved. This was because all lints would run, no matter their default level, or if the user had `#![allow]`ed them. This PR changes that. This change would improve both the Rust lint infrastructure and Clippy, but Clippy will see the most benefit, as it has about 900 registered lints (and growing!)

So yeah, with this little patch we filter all lints pre-linting, and remove any lint that is either:
- Manually `#![allow]`ed in the whole crate,
- Allowed in the command line, or
- Not manually enabled with `#[warn]` or similar, and its default level is `Allow`

As some lints **need** to run, this PR also adds **loadbearing lints**. On a lint declaration, you can use the ``@eval_always` = true` marker to label it as loadbearing. A loadbearing lint will never be filtered (it will always run)

Deny calls to non-`#[const_trait]` methods in MIR constck

This is a (potentially temporary) fix that closes off the mismatch in assumptions between MIR constck and typeck which does the const traits checking. Before this PR, MIR constck assumed that typeck correctly handled all calls to trait methods in const contexts if effects is enabled. That is not true because typeck only correctly handles callees that are const. For non-const callees (such as methods in a non-const_trait), typeck had never created an error.

45089ec19e/compiler/rustc_hir_typeck/src/callee.rs (L876-L877)

I called this potentially temporary because the const checks could be moved to HIR entirely. Alongside the recent refactor in const stability checks where that component could be placed would need more discussion. (cc ```@compiler-errors``` ```@RalfJung)```

Tests are updated, mainly due to traits not being const in core, so tests that call them correctly error.

This fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/project-const-traits/issues/12.

Const stability checks v2

The const stability system has served us well ever since `const fn` were first stabilized. It's main feature is that it enforces *recursive* validity -- a stable const fn cannot internally make use of unstable const features without an explicit marker in the form of `#[rustc_allow_const_fn_unstable]`. This is done to make sure that we don't accidentally expose unstable const features on stable in a way that would be hard to take back. As part of this, it is enforced that a `#[rustc_const_stable]` can only call `#[rustc_const_stable]` functions. However, some problems have been coming up with increased usage:
- It is baffling that we have to mark private or even unstable functions as `#[rustc_const_stable]` when they are used as helpers in regular stable `const fn`, and often people will rather add `#[rustc_allow_const_fn_unstable]` instead which was not our intention.
- The system has several gaping holes: a private `const fn` without stability attributes whose inherited stability (walking up parent modules) is `#[stable]` is allowed to call *arbitrary* unstable const operations, but can itself be called from stable `const fn`. Similarly, `#[allow_internal_unstable]` on a macro completely bypasses the recursive nature of the check.

Fundamentally, the problem is that we have *three* disjoint categories of functions, and not enough attributes to distinguish them:
1. const-stable functions
2. private/unstable functions that are meant to be callable from const-stable functions
3. functions that can make use of unstable const features

Functions in the first two categories cannot use unstable const features and they can only call functions from the first two categories.

This PR implements the following system:
- `#[rustc_const_stable]` puts functions in the first category. It may only be applied to `#[stable]` functions.
- `#[rustc_const_unstable]` by default puts functions in the third category. The new attribute `#[rustc_const_stable_indirect]` can be added to such a function to move it into the second category.
- `const fn` without a const stability marker are in the second category if they are still unstable. They automatically inherit the feature gate for regular calls, it can now also be used for const-calls.

Also, all the holes mentioned above have been closed. There's still one potential hole that is hard to avoid, which is when MIR building automatically inserts calls to a particular function in stable functions -- which happens in the panic machinery. Those need to be manually marked `#[rustc_const_stable_indirect]` to be sure they follow recursive const stability. But that's a fairly rare and special case so IMO it's fine.

The net effect of this is that a `#[unstable]` or unmarked function can be constified simply by marking it as `const fn`, and it will then be const-callable from stable `const fn` and subject to recursive const stability requirements. If it is publicly reachable (which implies it cannot be unmarked), it will be const-unstable under the same feature gate. Only if the function ever becomes `#[stable]` does it need a `#[rustc_const_unstable]` or `#[rustc_const_stable]` marker to decide if this should also imply const-stability.

Adding `#[rustc_const_unstable]` is only needed for (a) functions that need to use unstable const lang features (including intrinsics), or (b) `#[stable]` functions that are not yet intended to be const-stable. Adding `#[rustc_const_stable]` is only needed for functions that are actually meant to be directly callable from stable const code. `#[rustc_const_stable_indirect]` is used to mark intrinsics as const-callable and for `#[rustc_const_unstable]` functions that are actually called from other, exposed-on-stable `const fn`. No other attributes are required.

I think in the future we may want to tweak this further, so that in the hopefully common case where a public function's const-stability just exactly mirrors its regular stability, we never have to add any attribute. But right now, once the function is stable this requires `#[rustc_const_stable]`.

### Open question

There is one point I could see we might want to do differently, and that is putting `#[rustc_const_unstable]`  functions (but not intrinsics) in category 2 by default, and requiring an extra attribute for `#[rustc_const_not_exposed_on_stable]` or so. This would require a bunch of extra annotations, but would have the advantage that turning a `#[rustc_const_unstable]` into `#[rustc_const_stable]`  will never change the way the function is const-checked. Currently, we often discover in the const stabilization PR that a function needs some other unstable const things, and then we rush to quickly deal with that. In this alternative universe, we'd work towards getting rid of the `rustc_const_not_exposed_on_stable` before stabilization, and once that is done stabilization becomes a trivial matter. `#[rustc_const_stable_indirect]` would then only be used for intrinsics.

I think I like this idea, but might want to do it in a follow-up PR, as it will need a whole bunch of annotations in the standard library. Also, we probably want to convert all const intrinsics to the "new" form (`#[rustc_intrinsic]` instead of an `extern` block) before doing this to avoid having to deal with two different ways of declaring intrinsics.

Run the full `run-make` test suite in the `x86_64-gnu-debug` CI job. This is currently the *only* CI job where `//@ needs-force-clang-based-test` will be satisfied, so some `run-make` tests will literally never be run otherwise. Before this PR, the CI job only ran `run-make` tests which contains the substring `clang` in its test name, which is both (1) a footgun because it's very easy to forget and (2) it masks tests that would otherwise fail (even failing to compile) because the test is skipped if doesn't have a `clang` in its test name.

With the environment of `x86_64-gnu-debug`, two `run-make` tests failed before this PR:

1. `tests/run-make/issue-84395-lto-embed-bitcode/rmake.rs`: this was broken for a long time because `objcopy` in llvm bin tools was renamed to `llvm-objcopy`. This test was converted into a rmake.rs test, rather straight forward.
2. `tests/run-make/cross-lang-lto-riscv-abi/rmake.rs`: this was broken for a long time and never worked. The old version inspected human-readable output of `llvm-readobj --file-header` looking for substring `EF_RISCV_FLOAT_ABI_DOUBLE`, but the human-readable output will only contain something like `Flags: 0x5, RVC, double-float ABI`, hence it will never match. This test was fixed by instead using the `object` crate to actually decode the ELF headers looking for the specific `e_flags` based on reading the RISCV ELF psABI docs.

This PR is best reviewed commit-by-commit, two commits setup the support library for functionality and two commits are for each of the failing `run-make` tests.

I had to bump the `x86_64-gnu-debug` job to be ran with a runner with larger disk space.
