6ac0ba3c3a Improve Vec::resize so that it can be used in Read::read_to_end
We needed a more efficient way to zerofill the vector in read_to_end.
This to reduce the memory intialization overhead to a minimum.

Use the implementation of `std::vec::from_elem` (used for the vec![]
macro) for Vec::resize as well. For simple element types like u8, this
compiles to memset, so it makes Vec::resize much more efficient.

1d67cef6d2 std::io: New ErrorKind value InvalidData
This takes the cases from InvalidInput where a data format error
was encountered. This is different from the documented semantics
of InvalidInput, which more likely indicate a programming error.

29d1252e4d deprecate Unicode functions that will be moved to crates.io
This patch
1. renames libunicode to librustc_unicode,
2. deprecates several pieces of libunicode (see below), and
3. removes references to deprecated functions from
   librustc_driver and libsyntax. This may change pretty-printed
   output from these modules in cases involving wide or combining
   characters used in filenames, identifiers, etc.

The following functions are marked deprecated:

1. char.width() and str.width():
   --> use unicode-width crate

2. str.graphemes() and str.grapheme_indices():
   --> use unicode-segmentation crate

3. str.nfd_chars(), str.nfkd_chars(), str.nfc_chars(), str.nfkc_chars(),
   char.compose(), char.decompose_canonical(), char.decompose_compatible(),
   char.canonical_combining_class():
   --> use unicode-normalization crate

abd747cd15 Rollup merge of #23847 - bcoopers:read_clarification, r=sfackler
This introduces no functional changes except for reducing a few unnecessary operations and variables.  Vec has the behavior that, if you request space past the capacity with reserve(), it will round up to the nearest power of 2.  What that effectively means is that after the first call to reserve(16), we are doubling our capacity every time.  So using the DEFAULT_BUF_SIZE and doubling cap_size() here is meaningless and has no effect on the call to reserve().

Note that with #23842 implemented this will hopefully have a clearer API and less of a need for commenting.  If #23842 is not implemented then the most clear implementation would be to call reserve_exact(buf.capacity()) at every step (and making sure that buf.capacity() is not zero at the beginning of the function of course).

Edit- functional change now introduced.  We will now zero 16 bytes of the vector first, then double to 32, then 64, etc. until we read 64kB.  This stops us from zeroing the entire vector when we double it, some of which may be wasted work.  Reallocation still follows the doubling strategy, but the responsibility has been moved to vec.extend(), which calls reserve() and push_back().

ac77392f8a std: Stabilize last bits of io::Error
This commit stabilizes a few remaining bits of the `io::Error` type:

* The `Error::new` method is now stable. The last `detail` parameter was removed
  and the second `desc` parameter was generalized to `E: Into<Box<Error>>` to
  allow creating an I/O error from any form of error. Currently there is no form
  of downcasting, but this will be added in time.

* An implementation of `From<&str> for Box<Error>` was added to liballoc to
  allow construction of errors from raw strings.

* The `Error::raw_os_error` method was stabilized as-is.

* Trait impls for `Clone`, `Eq`, and `PartialEq` were removed from `Error` as it
  is not possible to use them with trait objects.

This is a breaking change due to the modification of the `new` method as well as
the removal of the trait implementations for the `Error` type.

with_end_to_cap is enormously expensive now that it's initializing
memory since it involves 64k allocation + memset on every call. This is
most noticable when calling read_to_end on very small readers, where the
new version if **4 orders of magnitude** faster.

BufReader also depended on with_end_to_cap so I've rewritten it in its
original form.

As a bonus, converted the buffered IO struct Debug impls to use the
debug builders.

I first came across this in sfackler/rust-postgres#106 where a user reported a 10x performance regression. A call to read_to_end turned out to be the culprit: 9cd413d42c.

The new version differs from the old in a couple of ways. The buffer size used is now adaptive. It starts at 32 bytes and doubles each time EOF hasn't been reached up to a limit of 64k. In addition, the buffer is only truncated when EOF or an error has been reached, rather than after every call to read as was the case for the old implementation.

I wrote up a benchmark to compare the old version and new version: https://gist.github.com/sfackler/e979711b0ee2f2063462

It tests a couple of different cases: a high bandwidth reader, a low bandwidth reader, and a low bandwidth reader that won't return more than 10k per call to `read`. The high bandwidth reader should be analagous to use cases when reading from e.g. a `BufReader` or `Vec`, and the low bandwidth readers should be analogous to reading from something like a `TcpStream`.

Of special note, reads from a high bandwith reader containing 4 bytes are now *4,495 times faster*.

e71221f327 std: Stabilize BufRead::split
Now that `<[_]>::split` is an inherent method, it will trump `BufRead::split`
when `BufRead` is in scope, so there is no longer a conflict. As a result,
calling `slice.split()` will probably always give you precisely what you want!

I tried to use `#[allow_internal_unstable]` but it still spits out warnings as far as I can see. @huonw (I think you implemented it) does `#[allow_internal_unstable]` not work for some reason or am I using it incorrectly?

d54bd9f29a std: Stabilize the io module
The new `std::io` module has had some time to bake now, and this commit
stabilizes its functionality. There are still portions of the module which
remain unstable, and below contains a summart of the actions taken.

This commit also deprecates the entire contents of the `old_io` module in a
blanket fashion. All APIs should now have a reasonable replacement in the
new I/O modules.

94d71f8836 std: Implement stdio for std::io
This is an implementation of RFC 899 and adds stdio functionality to the new
`std::io` module. Details of the API can be found on the RFC, but from a high
level:

* `io::{stdin, stdout, stderr}` constructors are now available. There are also
  `*_raw` variants for unbuffered and unlocked access.
* All handles are globally shared (excluding raw variants).
* The stderr handle is no longer buffered.
* All handles can be explicitly locked (excluding the raw variants).

The `print!` and `println!` machinery has not yet been hooked up to these
streams just yet. The `std::fmt::output` module has also not yet been
implemented as part of this commit.

New functions, `slice::from_raw_parts` and `slice::from_raw_parts_mut`,
are added to implement the lifetime convention as agreed in rust-lang/rfcs#556.
The functions `slice::from_raw_buf` and `slice::from_raw_mut_buf` are
left deprecated for the time being.

Holding back on changing the signature of `std::ffi::c_str_to_bytes` as consensus in rust-lang/rfcs#592 is building to replace it with a composition of other functions.

Contribution to #21923.

5cf9905e25 std: Add io module again
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 576][rfc] which adds back the `std::io`
module to the standard library. No functionality in `std::old_io` has been
deprecated just yet, and the new `std::io` module is behind the same `io`
feature gate.

A good bit of functionality was copied over from `std::old_io`, but many tweaks
were required for the new method signatures. Behavior such as precisely when
buffered objects call to the underlying object may have been tweaked slightly in
the transition. All implementations were audited to use composition wherever
possible. For example the custom `pos` and `cap` cursors in `BufReader` were
removed in favor of just using `Cursor<Vec<u8>>`.

A few liberties were taken during this implementation which were not explicitly
spelled out in the RFC:

* The old `LineBufferedWriter` is now named `LineWriter`
* The internal representation of `Error` now favors OS error codes (a
  0-allocation path) and contains a `Box` for extra semantic data.
* The io prelude currently reexports `Seek` as `NewSeek` to prevent conflicts
  with the real prelude reexport of `old_io::Seek`
* The `chars` method was moved from `BufReadExt` to `ReadExt`.
* The `chars` iterator returns a custom error with a variant that explains that
  the data was not valid UTF-8.

f72b164510 std: Rename io to old_io
In preparation for the I/O rejuvination of the standard library, this commit
renames the current `io` module to `old_io` in order to make room for the new
I/O modules. It is expected that the I/O RFCs will land incrementally over time
instead of all at once, and this provides a fresh clean path for new modules to
enter into as well as guaranteeing that all old infrastructure will remain in
place for some time.

As each `old_io` module is replaced it will be deprecated in-place for new
structures in `std::{io, fs, net}` (as appropriate).

This commit does *not* leave a reexport of `old_io as io` as the deprecation
lint does not currently warn on this form of use. This is quite a large breaking
change for all imports in existing code, but all functionality is retained
precisely as-is and path statements simply need to be renamed from `io` to
`old_io`.

3cb9fa26ef std: Rename Show/String to Debug/Display
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 565][rfc] which is a stabilization of
the `std::fmt` module and the implementations of various formatting traits.
Specifically, the following changes were performed:

* The `Show` trait is now deprecated, it was renamed to `Debug`
* The `String` trait is now deprecated, it was renamed to `Display`
* Many `Debug` and `Display` implementations were audited in accordance with the
  RFC and audited implementations now have the `#[stable]` attribute
  * Integers and floats no longer print a suffix
  * Smart pointers no longer print details that they are a smart pointer
  * Paths with `Debug` are now quoted and escape characters
* The `unwrap` methods on `Result` now require `Display` instead of `Debug`
* The `Error` trait no longer has a `detail` method and now requires that
  `Display` must be implemented. With the loss of `String`, this has moved into
  libcore.
* `impl<E: Error> FromError<E> for Box<Error>` now exists
* `derive(Show)` has been renamed to `derive(Debug)`. This is not currently
  warned about due to warnings being emitted on stage1+

While backwards compatibility is attempted to be maintained with a blanket
implementation of `Display` for the old `String` trait (and the same for
`Show`/`Debug`) this is still a breaking change due to primitives no longer
implementing `String` as well as modifications such as `unwrap` and the `Error`
trait. Most code is fairly straightforward to update with a rename or tweaks of
method calls.

As discussed with @aturon, this PR removes the `Send` bound from `std::error::Error`, allowing us to implement `Error` for error types containing non-`Send` types. Current examples include `PoisonError` and `TryLockError` from `std::sync` which contain a Guard that we don't want sent between tasks.

1f70acbf4c Improvements to feature staging
This gets rid of the 'experimental' level, removes the non-staged_api
case (i.e. stability levels for out-of-tree crates), and lets the
staged_api attributes use 'unstable' and 'deprecated' lints.

This makes the transition period to the full feature staging design
a bit nicer.

This commit takes a first pass at stabilizing `std::thread`:

* It removes the `detach` method in favor of two constructors -- `spawn`
  for detached threads, `scoped` for "scoped" (i.e., must-join)
  threads. This addresses some of the surprise/frustrating debug
  sessions with the previous API, in which `spawn` produced a guard that
  on destruction joined the thread (unless `detach` was called).

  The reason to have the division in part is that `Send` will soon not
  imply `'static`, which means that `scoped` thread creation can take a
  closure over *shared stack data* of the parent thread. On the other
  hand, this means that the parent must not pop the relevant stack
  frames while the child thread is running. The `JoinGuard` is used to
  prevent this from happening by joining on drop (if you have not
  already explicitly `join`ed.) The APIs around `scoped` are
  future-proofed for the `Send` changes by taking an additional lifetime
  parameter. With the current definition of `Send`, this is forced to be
  `'static`, but when `Send` changes these APIs will gain their full
  flexibility immediately.

  Threads that are `spawn`ed, on the other hand, are detached from the
  start and do not yield an RAII guard.

  The hope is that, by making `scoped` an explicit opt-in with a very
  suggestive name, it will be drastically less likely to be caught by a
  surprising deadlock due to an implicit join at the end of a scope.

* The module itself is marked stable.

* Existing methods other than `spawn` and `scoped` are marked stable.

The migration path is:

44440e5c18 core: split into fmt::Show and fmt::String
fmt::Show is for debugging, and can and should be implemented for
all public types. This trait is used with `{:?}` syntax. There still
exists #[derive(Show)].

fmt::String is for types that faithfully be represented as a String.
Because of this, there is no way to derive fmt::String, all
implementations must be purposeful. It is used by the default format
syntax, `{}`.

This will break most instances of `{}`, since that now requires the type
to impl fmt::String. In most cases, replacing `{}` with `{:?}` is the
correct fix. Types that were being printed specifically for users should
receive a fmt::String implementation to fix this.

7d8d06f86b Remove deprecated functionality
This removes a large array of deprecated functionality, regardless of how
recently it was deprecated. The purpose of this commit is to clean out the
standard libraries and compiler for the upcoming alpha release.

Some notable compiler changes were to enable warnings for all now-deprecated
command line arguments (previously the deprecated versions were silently
accepted) as well as removing deriving(Zero) entirely (the trait was removed).

The distribution no longer contains the libtime or libregex_macros crates. Both
of these have been deprecated for some time and are available externally.

56290a0044 std: Stabilize the prelude module
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 503][rfc] which is a stabilization
story for the prelude. Most of the RFC was directly applied, removing reexports.
Some reexports are kept around, however:

* `range` remains until range syntax has landed to reduce churn.
* `Path` and `GenericPath` remain until path reform lands. This is done to
  prevent many imports of `GenericPath` which will soon be removed.
* All `io` traits remain until I/O reform lands so imports can be rewritten all
  at once to `std::io::prelude::*`.

e423fcf0e0 std: Enforce Unicode in fmt::Writer
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 526][rfc] which is a change to alter
the definition of the old `fmt::FormatWriter`. The new trait, renamed to
`Writer`, now only exposes one method `write_str` in order to guarantee that all
implementations of the formatting traits can only produce valid Unicode.

One of the primary improvements of this patch is the performance of the
`.to_string()` method by avoiding an almost-always redundant UTF-8 check. This
is a breaking change due to the renaming of the trait as well as the loss of the
`write` method, but migration paths should be relatively easy:

* All usage of `write` should move to `write_str`. If truly binary data was
  being written in an implementation of `Show`, then it will need to use a
  different trait or an altogether different code path.

* All usage of `write!` should continue to work as-is with no modifications.

* All usage of `Show` where implementations just delegate to another should
  continue to work as-is.

54452cdd68 std: Second pass stabilization for ptr
This commit performs a second pass for stabilization over the `std::ptr` module.
The specific actions taken were:

* The `RawPtr` trait was renamed to `PtrExt`
* The `RawMutPtr` trait was renamed to `MutPtrExt`
* The module name `ptr` is now stable.
* These functions were all marked `#[stable]` with no modification:
  * `null`
  * `null_mut`
  * `swap`
  * `replace`
  * `read`
  * `write`
  * `PtrExt::is_null`
  * `PtrExt::offset`
* These functions remain unstable:
  * `as_ref`, `as_mut` - the return value of an `Option` is not fully expressive
                         as null isn't the only bad value, and it's unclear
                         whether we want to commit to these functions at this
                         time. The reference/lifetime semantics as written are
                         also problematic in how they encourage arbitrary
                         lifetimes.
  * `zero_memory` - This function is currently not used at all in the
                    distribution, and in general it plays a broader role in the
                    "working with unsafe pointers" story. This story is not yet
                    fully developed, so at this time the function remains
                    unstable for now.
  * `read_and_zero` - This function remains unstable for largely the same
                      reasons as `zero_memory`.
* These functions are now all deprecated:
  * `PtrExt::null` - call `ptr::null` or `ptr::null_mut` instead.
  * `PtrExt::to_uint` - use an `as` expression instead.
  * `PtrExt::is_not_null` - use `!p.is_null()` instead.

c32d03f417 std: Stabilize the prelude module
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 503][rfc] which is a stabilization
story for the prelude. Most of the RFC was directly applied, removing reexports.
Some reexports are kept around, however:

* `range` remains until range syntax has landed to reduce churn.
* `Path` and `GenericPath` remain until path reform lands. This is done to
  prevent many imports of `GenericPath` which will soon be removed.
* All `io` traits remain until I/O reform lands so imports can be rewritten all
  at once to `std::io::prelude::*`.

This is a breaking change because many prelude reexports have been removed, and
the RFC can be consulted for the exact list of removed reexports, as well as to
find the locations of where to import them.

a27fbac868 Revise std::thread API to join by default
This commit is part of a series that introduces a `std::thread` API to
replace `std::task`.

In the new API, `spawn` returns a `JoinGuard`, which by default will
join the spawned thread when dropped. It can also be used to join
explicitly at any time, returning the thread's result. Alternatively,
the spawned thread can be explicitly detached (so no join takes place).

As part of this change, Rust processes now terminate when the main
thread exits, even if other detached threads are still running, moving
Rust closer to standard threading models. This new behavior may break code
that was relying on the previously implicit join-all.

In addition to the above, the new thread API also offers some built-in
support for building blocking abstractions in user space; see the module
doc for details.

096a28607f librustc: Make Copy opt-in.
This change makes the compiler no longer infer whether types (structures
and enumerations) implement the `Copy` trait (and thus are implicitly
copyable). Rather, you must implement `Copy` yourself via `impl Copy for
MyType {}`.

A new warning has been added, `missing_copy_implementations`, to warn
you if a non-generic public type has been added that could have
implemented `Copy` but didn't.

For convenience, you may *temporarily* opt out of this behavior by using
`#![feature(opt_out_copy)]`. Note though that this feature gate will never be
accepted and will be removed by the time that 1.0 is released, so you should
transition your code away from using it.

This breaks code like:

    #[deriving(Show)]
    struct Point2D {
        x: int,
        y: int,
    }

    fn main() {
        let mypoint = Point2D {
            x: 1,
            y: 1,
        };
        let otherpoint = mypoint;
        println!("{}{}", mypoint, otherpoint);
    }

Change this code to:

Now that we have an overloaded comparison (`==`) operator, and that `Vec`/`String` deref to `[T]`/`str` on method calls, many `as_slice()`/`as_mut_slice()`/`to_string()` calls have become redundant. This patch removes them. These were the most common patterns:

- `assert_eq(test_output.as_slice(), "ground truth")` -> `assert_eq(test_output, "ground truth")`
- `assert_eq(test_output, "ground truth".to_string())` -> `assert_eq(test_output, "ground truth")`
- `vec.as_mut_slice().sort()` -> `vec.sort()`
- `vec.as_slice().slice(from, to)` -> `vec.slice(from_to)`

Note that e.g. `a_string.push_str(b_string.as_slice())` has been left untouched in this PR, since we first need to settle down whether we want to favor the `&*b_string` or the `b_string[]` notation.

e7c1f57d6c Back io::stdin with a global singleton BufferedReader
io::stdin returns a new `BufferedReader` each time it's called, which
results in some very confusing behavior with disappearing output. It now
returns a `StdinReader`, which wraps a global singleton
`Arc<Mutex<BufferedReader<StdReader>>`. `Reader` is implemented directly
on `StdinReader`. However, `Buffer` is not, as the `fill_buf` method is
fundamentaly un-thread safe. A `lock` method is defined on `StdinReader`
which returns a smart pointer wrapping the underlying `BufferedReader`
while guaranteeing mutual exclusion.

Code that treats the return value of io::stdin as implementing `Buffer`
will break. Add a call to `lock`:

```rust
io::stdin().lines()
// =>
io::stdin().lock().lines()
```

4af3494bb0 std: Stabilize std::fmt
This commit applies the stabilization of std::fmt as outlined in [RFC 380][rfc].
There are a number of breaking changes as a part of this commit which will need
to be handled to migrated old code:

* A number of formatting traits have been removed: String, Bool, Char, Unsigned,
  Signed, and Float. It is recommended to instead use Show wherever possible or
  to use adaptor structs to implement other methods of formatting.

* The format specifier for Boolean has changed from `t` to `b`.

* The enum `FormatError` has been renamed to `Error` as well as becoming a unit
  struct instead of an enum. The `WriteError` variant no longer exists.

* The `format_args_method!` macro has been removed with no replacement. Alter
  code to use the `format_args!` macro instead.

* The public fields of a `Formatter` have become read-only with no replacement.
  Use a new formatting string to alter the formatting flags in combination with
  the `write!` macro. The fields can be accessed through accessor methods on the
  `Formatter` structure.

Other than these breaking changes, the contents of std::fmt should now also all
contain stability markers. Most of them are still #[unstable] or #[experimental]

85c2c2e38c implement Writer for Vec<u8>
The trait has an obvious, sensible implementation directly on vectors so
the MemWriter wrapper is unnecessary. This will halt the trend towards
providing all of the vector methods on MemWriter along with eliminating
the noise caused by conversions between the two types. It also provides
the useful default Writer methods on Vec<u8>.

After the type is removed and code has been migrated, it would make
sense to add a new implementation of MemWriter with seeking support. The
simple use cases can be covered with vectors alone, and ones with the
need for seeks can use a new MemWriter implementation.

3a527f2b33 Runtime removal: add private sys, sys_common modules
These modules will house the code that used to be part of the runtime system
in libnative. The `sys_common` module contains a few low-level but
cross-platform details. The `sys` module is set up using `#[cfg()]` to
include either a unix or windows implementation of a common API
surface. This API surface is *not* exported directly in `libstd`, but is
instead used to bulid `std::os` and `std::io`.

Ultimately, the low-level details in `sys` will be exposed in a
controlled way through a separate platform-specific surface, but that
setup is not part of this patch.

cfafc1b737 Prelude: rename and consolidate extension traits
This commit renames a number of extension traits for slices and string
slices, now that they have been refactored for DST. In many cases,
multiple extension traits could now be consolidated. Further
consolidation will be possible with generalized where clauses.

The renamings are consistent with the [new `-Prelude`
suffix](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/344). There are probably
a few more candidates for being renamed this way, but that is left for
API stabilization of the relevant modules.

However, I do not expect any code that currently uses the standard

21ac985af4 collections: Remove all collections traits
As part of the collections reform RFC, this commit removes all collections
traits in favor of inherent methods on collections themselves. All methods
should continue to be available on all collections.

This is a breaking change with all of the collections traits being removed and
no longer being in the prelude. In order to update old code you should move the
trait implementations to inherent implementations directly on the type itself.

Note that some traits had default methods which will also need to be implemented
to maintain backwards compatibility.

The current terminology of "task failure" often causes problems when
writing or speaking about code. You often want to talk about the
possibility of an operation that returns a Result "failing", but cannot
because of the ambiguity with task failure. Instead, you have to speak
of "the failing case" or "when the operation does not succeed" or other
circumlocutions.

Likewise, we use a "Failure" header in rustdoc to describe when
operations may fail the task, but it would often be helpful to separate
out a section describing the "Err-producing" case.

We have been steadily moving away from task failure and toward Result as
an error-handling mechanism, so we should optimize our terminology
accordingly: Result-producing functions should be easy to describe.

To update your code, rename any call to `fail!` to `panic!` instead.
Assuming you have not created your own macro named `panic!`, this
will work on UNIX based systems:

    grep -lZR 'fail!' . | xargs -0 -l sed -i -e 's/fail!/panic!/g'

You can of course also do this by hand.

libstd/task and libsync/comm: "allow(deprecated)" for testing
    a deprecated method itself.
libsync/deque: remove superfluous "unsafe".
libsync/mutex and once: names of static variables should be in upper case.
libterm: introduce a helper function to effectively remove
    invocations of a deprecated method.

We still see a few warnings about using obsoleted native::task::spawn()
in the test modules for libsync.  I'm not sure how I should replace them
with std::task::TaksBuilder and native::task::NativeTaskBuilder
(dependency to libstd?)

ab5935c88d std: Convert statics to constants
This commit repurposes most statics as constants in the standard library itself,
with the exception of TLS keys which precisely have their own memory location as
an implementation detail.

This commit also rewrites the bitflags syntax to use `const` instead of
`static`. All invocations will need to replace the word `static` with `const`
when declaring flags.

Due to the modification of the `bitflags!` syntax, this is a:

dad59bdcbc Remove std::io::signal
The `std::io::signal` API was only implemented under `librustuv`, which
is now being removed. Rather than keep around an unimplemented API, this
commit removes it altogether.

See [green-rs](https://github.com/alexcrichton/green-rs/) for a possible
migration path for signal handling code, although in the long run we
plan to add native signal handling to `std::io`.

15966c3c1f Remove iotest macro
This commit removes the `iotest!` macro from `std::io`. The macro was
primarily used to ensure that all io-related tests were run on both
libnative and libgreen/librustuv. However, now that the librustuv stack
is being removed, the macro is no longer needed.

21df9c805f librustc: Give trait methods accessible via fewer autoderefs priority
over inherent methods accessible via more autoderefs.

This simplifies the trait matching algorithm. It breaks code like:

    impl Foo {
        fn foo(self) {
            // before this change, this will be called
        }
    }

    impl<'a,'b,'c> Trait for &'a &'b &'c Foo {
        fn foo(self) {
            // after this change, this will be called
        }
    }

    fn main() {
        let x = &(&(&Foo));

To explicitly indicate that you wish to call the inherent method, perform
explicit dereferences. For example:

    fn main() {
        let x = &(&(&Foo));
        (***x).foo();
    }

467bea04fa librustc: Forbid inherent implementations that aren't adjacent to the
type they provide an implementation for.

This breaks code like:

    mod foo {
        struct Foo { ... }
    }

    impl foo::Foo {
        ...
    }

Change this code to:

    mod foo {
        struct Foo { ... }

        impl Foo {
            ...
        }
    }

Additionally, if you used the I/O path extension methods `stat`,
`lstat`, `exists`, `is_file`, or `is_dir`, note that these methods have
been moved to the the `std::io::fs::PathExtensions` trait. This breaks
code like:

    fn is_it_there() -> bool {
        Path::new("/foo/bar/baz").exists()
    }

Change this code to:

    use std::io::fs::PathExtensions;

    fn is_it_there() -> bool {
        Path::new("/foo/bar/baz").exists()
    }

13079c1a85 Optimized IR generation for UTF-8 and UTF-16 encoding
- Both can now be inlined and constant folded away
- Both can no longer cause failure
- Both now return an `Option` instead

Removed debug `assert!()`s over the valid ranges of a `char`
- It affected optimizations due to unwinding
- Char handling is now sound enought that they became uneccessary

f3e0db1559 Derive PartialOrd, Ord and Hash for bitflags types.
In order to prevent users from having to manually implement Hash and Ord for
bitflags types, this commit derives these traits automatically.

This breaks code that has manually implemented any of these traits for types
created by the bitflags! macro. Change this code by removing implementations
of these traits.

- `width()` computes the displayed width of a string, ignoring the width of control characters.
    - arguably we might do *something* else for control characters, but the question is, what?
    - users who want to do something else can iterate over chars()

- `graphemes()` returns a `Graphemes` struct, which implements an iterator over the grapheme clusters of a &str.
    - fully compliant with [UAX#29](http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr29/#Grapheme_Cluster_Boundaries)
    - passes all [Unicode-supplied tests](http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr41/tr41-15.html#Tests29)

- added code to generate additionial categories in `unicode.py`
    - `Cn` aka `Not_Assigned`
    - categories necessary for grapheme cluster breaking

- tidied up the exports from libunicode
  - all exports are exposed through a module rather than directly at crate root.
  - std::prelude imports UnicodeChar and UnicodeStrSlice from std::char and std::str rather than directly from libunicode

cf432b8f8f add Graphemes iterator; tidy unicode exports
- Graphemes and GraphemeIndices structs implement iterators over
  grapheme clusters analogous to the Chars and CharOffsets for chars in
  a string. Iterator and DoubleEndedIterator are available for both.

- tidied up the exports for libunicode. crate root exports are now moved
  into more appropriate module locations:
  - UnicodeStrSlice, Words, Graphemes, GraphemeIndices are in str module
  - UnicodeChar exported from char instead of crate root
  - canonical_combining_class is exported from str rather than crate root

Since libunicode's exports have changed, programs that previously relied
on the old export locations will need to change their `use` statements
to reflect the new ones. See above for more information on where the new
exports live.

e0ede9c6b3 Stabilization for owned (now boxed) and cell
This PR is the outcome of the library stabilization meeting for the
`liballoc::owned` and `libcore::cell` modules.

Aside from the stability attributes, there are a few breaking changes:

* The `owned` modules is now named `boxed`, to better represent its
  contents. (`box` was unavailable, since it's a keyword.) This will
  help avoid the misconception that `Box` plays a special role wrt
  ownership.

* The `AnyOwnExt` extension trait is renamed to `BoxAny`, and its `move`
  method is renamed to `downcast`, in both cases to improve clarity.

* The recently-added `AnySendOwnExt` extension trait is removed; it was
  not being used and is unnecessary.

f7bb31a47a libstd: set baseline stability levels.
Earlier commits have established a baseline of `experimental` stability
for all crates under the facade (so their contents are considered
experimental within libstd). Since `experimental` is `allow` by
default, we should use the same baseline stability for libstd itself.

This commit adds `experimental` tags to all of the modules defined in
`std`, and `unstable` to `std` itself.

108b8b6dc7 Deprecate the bytes!() macro.
Replace its usage with byte string literals, except in `bytes!()` tests.
Also add a new snapshot, to be able to use the new b"foo" syntax.

The src/etc/2014-06-rewrite-bytes-macros.py script automatically
rewrites `bytes!()` invocations into byte string literals.
Pass it filenames as arguments to generate a diff that you can inspect,
or `--apply` followed by filenames to apply the changes in place.
Diffs can be piped into `tip` or `pygmentize -l diff` for coloring.

00f9263914 std: Add an adaptor for Writer => FormatWriter
This new method, write_fmt(), is the one way to write a formatted list of
arguments into a Writer stream. This has a special adaptor to preserve errors
which occur on the writer.

All macros will be updated to use this method explicitly.

046062d3bf Process::new etc should support non-utf8 commands/args
The existing APIs for spawning processes took strings for the command
and arguments, but the underlying system may not impose utf8 encoding,
so this is overly limiting.

The assumption we actually want to make is just that the command and
arguments are viewable as [u8] slices with no interior NULLs, i.e., as
CStrings. The ToCStr trait is a handy bound for types that meet this
requirement (such as &str and Path).

However, since the commands and arguments are often a mixture of
strings and paths, it would be inconvenient to take a slice with a
single T: ToCStr bound. So this patch revamps the process creation API
to instead use a builder-style interface, called `Command`, allowing
arguments to be added one at a time with differing ToCStr
implementations for each.

The initial cut of the builder API has some drawbacks that can be
addressed once issue #13851 (libstd as a facade) is closed. These are
detailed as FIXMEs.

I feel that this is a very vital, missing piece of functionality. This adds on to #13072.

Only bits used in the definition of the bitflag are considered for the universe set. This is a bit safer than simply inverting all of the bits in the wrapped value.
