Remove LLVM attribute removal

This was necessary before, because `declare_raw_fn` would always apply
the default optimization attributes to every declared function.
Then `attributes::from_fn_attrs` would have to remove the default
attributes in the case of, e.g. `#[optimize(speed)]` in a `-Os` build.
(see [`src/test/codegen/optimize-attr-1.rs`](03a8cc7df1/src/test/codegen/optimize-attr-1.rs (L33)))

However, every relevant callsite of `declare_raw_fn` (i.e. where we
actually generate code for the function, and not e.g. a call to an
intrinsic, where optimization attributes don't [?] matter)
calls `from_fn_attrs`, so we can remove the attribute setting
from `declare_raw_fn`, and rely on `from_fn_attrs` to apply the correct
attributes all at once.

Direct users towards using Rust target feature names in CLI

This PR consists of a couple of changes on how we handle target features.

In particular there is a bug-fix wherein we avoid passing through features that aren't prefixed by `+` or `-` to LLVM. These appear to be causing LLVM to assert, which is pretty poor a behaviour (and also makes it pretty clear we expect feature names to be prefixed).

The other commit, I anticipate to be somewhat more controversial is outputting a warning when users specify a LLVM-specific, or otherwise unknown, feature name on the CLI. In those situations we request users to either replace it with a known Rust feature name (e.g. `bmi` -> `bmi1`) or file a feature request. I've a couple motivations for this: first of all, if users are specifying these features on the command line, I'm pretty confident there is also a need for these features to be usable via `#[cfg(target_feature)]` machinery.  And second, we're growing a fair number of backends recently and having ability to provide some sort of unified-ish interface in this place seems pretty useful to me.

723d33462c Restore the local filter on mono item sorting
In `CodegenUnit::items_in_deterministic_order`, there's a comment that
only local HirIds should be taken into account, but #90408 removed the
`as_local` call that sets others to None. Restoring that check fixes the
s390x hangs seen in [RHBZ 2058803].

400d343796 Suggest adding Copy bound when Adt is moved out
Previously we've only suggested adding `Copy` bounds when the type being
moved/copied is a type parameter (generic). With this commit we also
suggest adding bounds when a type
- Can be copy
- All predicates that need to be satisfied for that are based on type
  params

i.e. we will suggest `T: Copy` for `Option<T>`, but won't suggest
anything for `Option<String>`.

Future work: it would be nice to also suggest adding `.clone()` calls

Fix inconsistent symbol mangling of integers constants with -Zverbose

The `PrettyPrinter` changes formatting of array size and integer
constants based on `-Zverbose`, so its implementation cannot be used in
legacy symbol mangling.

Example symbol demangling before changes:

Check method input expressions once

If the user mistakenly forgets to wrap their method args in a tuple, then the compiler tries to check that  types within the tuple match the expression args. This means we call `check_expr` once within this diagnostic code, so when we check the expr once again in `demand_compatible`, we attempt to apply expr adjustments twice, leading to ICEs.

This PR attempts to fix this by skipping the expression type check in `demand_compatible` if we have detected an method arg mismatch at all.

This does lead to a single UI test regressing slightly, due to a diagnostic disappearing, though I don't know if it is generally meaningful to even raise an type error after noting that the argument count is incorrect in a function call, since the user might be providing (in-context) meaningless expressions to the wrong method.

I can adjust this to be a bit more targeted (to just skip checking exprs in `demand_compatible` in the tuple case) if this UI test regression is a problem.

Caching the stable hash of Ty within itself

Instead of computing stable hashes on types as needed, we compute it during interning.

This way we can, when a hash is requested, just hash that hash, which is significantly faster than traversing the type itself.

We only do this for incremental for now, as incremental is the only frequent user of stable hashing.

As a next step we can try out

* moving the hash and TypeFlags to Interner, so projections and regions get the same benefit (tho regions are not nested, so maybe that's not a good idea? Would be nice for dedup tho)
* start comparing types via their stable hash instead of their address?

3f73491589 Only count mutations with projections as borrows
Because bindings also count as a mutation, the previous behavior counted
all variables as borrowed, completely negating the effect of drop
tracking.

Fix ICE when passing block to while-loop condition

We were incorrectly delaying a bug when we passed _any_ block (that evaluated to `()`) to a while loop. This PR makes the check a bit more sophisticated.

We should only suppress the error here in cases that are equivalent to those we find in #93574 (i.e. only while loop conditions that have destructuring assignment expressions in them).

I would not be opposed to removing the delay-bug altogether, and just emitting this error always. I much prefer duplicate errors over no errors.

Only create a single expansion for each inline integration.

The inlining integrator used to create one expansion for each span from the callee body.
This PR reverses the logic to create a single expansion for the whole call,
which is more consistent with how macro expansions work for macros.

This should remove the large memory regression in #91743.

Apply noundef attribute to all scalar types which do not permit raw init

Beyond `&`/`&mut`/`Box`, this covers `char`, enum discriminants, `NonZero*`, etc.
All such types currently cause a Miri error if left uninitialized,
and an `invalid_value` lint in cases like `mem::uninitialized::<char>()`.

Note that this _does not_ change whether or not it is UB for `u64` (or
other integer types with no invalid values) to be undef.

Fixes (partially) #74378.

Use the first codegen backend in the config.toml as default

It is currently hard coded to llvm if enabled and cranelift otherwise.
This made some sense when cranelift was the only alternative codegen
backend. Since the introduction of the gcc backend this doesn't make
much sense anymore. Before this PR bootstrapping rustc using a backend
other than llvm or cranelift required changing the source of
rustc_interface. With this PR it becomes a matter of putting the right
backend as first enabled backend in config.toml.

This PR officially documents that the method is soft deprecated to have a single point of truth for it.

Avoid query cache sharding code in single-threaded mode

In non-parallel compilers, this is just adding needless overhead at compilation time (since there is only one shard statically anyway). This amounts to roughly ~10 seconds reduction in bootstrap time, with overall neutral (some wins, some losses) performance results.

Parallel compiler performance should be largely unaffected by this PR; sharding is kept there.

7ad4297a49 Use the first codegen backend in the config.toml as default
It is currently hard coded to llvm if enabled and cranelift otherwise.
This made some sense when cranelift was the only alternative codegen
backend. Since the introduction of the gcc backend this doesn't make
much sense anymore. Before this PR bootstrapping rustc using a backend
other than llvm or cranelift required changing the source of
rustc_interface. With this PR it becomes a matter of putting the right
backend as first enabled backend in config.toml.

No branch protection metadata unless enabled

Even if we emit metadata disabling branch protection, this metadata may
conflict with other modules (e.g. during LTO) that have different branch
protection metadata set.

This is an unstable flag and feature, so ideally the flag not being
specified should act as if the feature wasn't implemented in the first
place.

Additionally this PR also ensures we emit an error if
`-Zbranch-protection` is set on targets other than the supported
aarch64. For now the error is being output from codegen, but ideally it
should be moved to earlier in the pipeline before stabilization.

5979b681e6 Apply noundef attribute to all scalar types which do not permit raw init
Beyond `&`/`&mut`/`Box`, this covers `char`, discriminants, `NonZero*`, etc.
All such types currently cause a Miri error if left uninitialized,
and an `invalid_value` lint in cases like `mem::uninitialized::<char>()`

Note that this _does not_ change whether or not it is UB for `u64` (or
other integer types with no invalid values) to be undef.

Restrict query recursion in `needs_significant_drop`

Overly aggressive use of the query system to improve caching lead to query cycles and consequently ICEs. This patch fixes this by restricting the use of the query system as a cache to those cases where it is definitely correct.

Closes #92725 .

This is essentially a revert of #90845 for the significant drop case only. The general `needs_drop` still does the same thing. The hope is that this is enough to preserve the performance improvements of that PR while fixing the ICE. Should get a perf run to verify that this is the case.

Avoid exhausting stack space in dominator compression

Doesn't add a test case -- I ended up running into this while playing with the generated example from #43578, which we could do with a run-make test (to avoid checking a large code snippet into tree), but I suspect we don't want to wait for it to compile (locally it takes ~14s -- not terrible, but doesn't seem worth it to me). In practice stack space exhaustion is difficult to test for, too, since if we set the bound too low a different call structure above us (e.g., a nearer ensure_sufficient_stack call) would let the test pass even with the old impl, most likely.

Locally it seems like this manages to perform approximately equivalently to the recursion, but will run perf to confirm.

chalk: Fix wrong debrujin index in opaque type handling.

A folder in opaque type lowering was substituting all opaque type references with a variable with debrujin index 0 ignoring how many binders deep we are.

This caused an ICE with `Not enough bound vars: ^0 not found in []` ([full logs](https://gist.github.com/Dirbaio/2b9374ff4fce37afb9d665dc9f0000df)) with the following code.

```rust
fn main() -> () {}
async fn foo(x: u32) -> u32 {
    x
}
```

With the fix, it no longer ICEs. It still doesn't typecheck due to generator issues. I've added a "known-bug" test so that at least it doesn't regress back to ICEing.

Populate liveness facts when calling `get_body_with_borrowck_facts` without `-Z polonius`

For a new feature of [Flowistry](https://github.com/willcrichton/flowistry), a static-analysis tool, we need to obtain a `mir::Body`'s liveness facts using `get_body_with_borrowck_facts` (added in #86977). We'd like to do this without passing `-Z polonius` as a compiler arg to avoid borrow checking the entire crate.

Support for doing this was added in #88983, but the Polonius input facts used for liveness analysis are empty. This happens because the liveness input facts are populated in `liveness::generate` depending only on the value of `AllFacts::enabled` (which is toggled via compiler args).

This PR propagates the [`use_polonius`](8b09ba6a5d/compiler/rustc_borrowck/src/nll.rs (L168)) flag to `liveness::generate` to support populating liveness facts without requiring the `-Z polonius` flag.

This fix is somewhat patchy - if it'd be better to add more widely-accessible state (like `AllFacts::enabled`) I'd be open to ideas!

Miri fn ptr check: don't use conservative null check

In https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/94270 I used the wrong NULL check for function pointers: `memory.ptr_may_be_null` is conservative even on machines that support ptr-to-int casts, leading to false errors in Miri.

This fixes that problem, and also replaces that foot-fun of a method with `scalar_may_be_null` which is never unnecessarily conservative.

debuginfo: Simplify TypeMap used during LLVM debuginfo generation.

This PR simplifies the TypeMap that is used in `rustc_codegen_llvm::debuginfo::metadata`. It was unnecessarily complicated because it was originally implemented when types were not yet normalized before codegen. So it did it's own normalization and kept track of multiple unnormalized types being mapped to a single unique id.

This PR is based on https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/93503, which is not merged yet.

The PR also removes the arena used for allocating string ids and instead uses `InlinableString` from the [inlinable_string](https://crates.io/crates/inlinable_string) crate. That might not be the best choice, since that crate does not seem to be very actively maintained. The [flexible-string](https://crates.io/crates/flexible-string) crate would be an alternative.

d4de1f230c Auto merge of #93368 - eddyb:diagbld-guarantee, r=estebank
rustc_errors: let `DiagnosticBuilder::emit` return a "guarantee of emission".

That is, `DiagnosticBuilder` is now generic over the return type of `.emit()`, so we'll now have:
* `DiagnosticBuilder<ErrorReported>` for error (incl. fatal/bug) diagnostics
  * can only be created via a `const L: Level`-generic constructor, that limits allowed variants via a `where` clause, so not even `rustc_errors` can accidentally bypass this limitation
  * asserts `diagnostic.is_error()` on emission, just in case the construction restriction was bypassed (e.g. by replacing the whole `Diagnostic` inside `DiagnosticBuilder`)
  * `.emit()` returns `ErrorReported`, as a "proof" token that `.emit()` was called
    (though note that this isn't a real guarantee until after completing the work on
     #69426)
* `DiagnosticBuilder<()>` for everything else (warnings, notes, etc.)
  * can also be obtained from other `DiagnosticBuilder`s by calling `.forget_guarantee()`

This PR is a companion to other ongoing work, namely:
* #69426
  and it's ongoing implementation:
  #93222
  the API changes in this PR are needed to get statically-checked "only errors produce `ErrorReported` from `.emit()`", but doesn't itself provide any really strong guarantees without those other `ErrorReported` changes
* #93244
  would make the choices of API changes (esp. naming) in this PR fit better overall

In order to be able to let `.emit()` return anything trustable, several changes had to be made:
* `Diagnostic`'s `level` field is now private to `rustc_errors`, to disallow arbitrary "downgrade"s from "some kind of error" to "warning" (or anything else that doesn't cause compilation to fail)
  * it's still possible to replace the whole `Diagnostic` inside the `DiagnosticBuilder`, sadly, that's harder to fix, but it's unlikely enough that we can paper over it with asserts on `.emit()`
* `.cancel()` now consumes `DiagnosticBuilder`, preventing `.emit()` calls on a cancelled diagnostic
  * it's also now done internally, through `DiagnosticBuilder`-private state, instead of having a `Level::Cancelled` variant that can be read (or worse, written) by the user
  * this removes a hazard of calling `.cancel()` on an error then continuing to attach details to it, and even expect to be able to `.emit()` it
  * warnings were switched to *only* `can_emit_warnings` on emission (instead of pre-cancelling early)
  * `struct_dummy` was removed (as it relied on a pre-`Cancelled` `Diagnostic`)
* since `.emit()` doesn't consume the `DiagnosticBuilder` <sub>(I tried and gave up, it's much more work than this PR)</sub>,
  we have to make `.emit()` idempotent wrt the guarantees it returns
  * thankfully, `err.emit(); err.emit();` can return `ErrorReported` both times, as the second `.emit()` call has no side-effects *only* because the first one did do the appropriate emission
* `&mut Diagnostic` is now used in a lot of function signatures, which used to take `&mut DiagnosticBuilder` (in the interest of not having to make those functions generic)
  * the APIs were already mostly identical, allowing for low-effort porting to this new setup
  * only some of the suggestion methods needed some rework, to have the extra `DiagnosticBuilder` functionality on the `Diagnostic` methods themselves (that change is also present in #93259)
  * `.emit()`/`.cancel()` aren't available, but IMO calling them from an "error decorator/annotator" function isn't a good practice, and can lead to strange behavior (from the caller's perspective)
  * `.downgrade_to_delayed_bug()` was added, letting you convert any `.is_error()` diagnostic into a `delay_span_bug` one (which works because in both cases the guarantees available are the same)

This PR should ideally be reviewed commit-by-commit, since there is a lot of fallout in each.

Fix intra-doc link issues exposed by new macro
These links never worked, but the lint was suppressed due to the fact
that the span was pointing into the macro. With the new macro
implementation, the span now points directly to the doc comment in the
macro invocation, so it's no longer suppressed.

Avoid emitting full macro body into JSON errors

While investigating https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/94322, it was noted that currently the JSON diagnostics for macro backtraces include the full def_site span -- the whole macro body.

It seems like this shouldn't be necessary, so this PR adjusts the span to just be the "guessed head", typically the macro name. It doesn't look like we keep enough information to synthesize a nicer span here at this time.

Atop #92123, this reduces output for the src/test/ui/suggestions/missing-lifetime-specifier.rs test from 660 KB to 156 KB locally.

Always format to internal String in FmtPrinter

This avoids monomorphizing for different parameters, decreasing generic code
instantiated downstream from rustc_middle -- locally seeing 7% unoptimized LLVM IR
line wins on rustc_borrowck, for example.

We likely can't/shouldn't get rid of the Result-ness on most functions, though some
further cleanup avoiding fmt::Error where we now know it won't occur may be possible,
though somewhat painful -- fmt::Write is a pretty annoying API to work with in practice
when you're trying to use it infallibly.

Partially move cg_ssa towards using a single builder

Not all codegen backends can handle hopping between blocks well. For example Cranelift requires blocks to be terminated before switching to building a new block. Rust-gpu requires a `RefCell` to allow hopping between blocks and cg_gcc currently has a buggy implementation of hopping between blocks. This PR reduces the amount of cases where cg_ssa switches between blocks before they are finished and mostly fixes the block hopping in cg_gcc. (~~only `scalar_to_backend` doesn't handle it correctly yet in cg_gcc~~ fixed that one.)

`@antoyo` please review the cg_gcc changes.

For espidf targets without native atomics, there is atomic emulation inside [the newlib component of espidf](https://github.com/espressif/esp-idf/blob/master/components/newlib/stdatomic.c), this has been extended to support emulation up to 64bits therefore we are safe to increase the atomic width for the `riscv32imc_esp_espidf` target.

Miri: relax fn ptr check

As discussed in https://github.com/rust-lang/unsafe-code-guidelines/issues/72#issuecomment-1025407536, the function pointer check done by Miri is currently overeager: contrary to our usual principle of only checking rather uncontroversial validity invariants, we actually check that the pointer points to a real function.

So, this relaxes the check to what the validity invariant probably will be (and what the reference already says it is): the function pointer must be non-null, and that's it.

The check that CTFE does on the final value of a constant is unchanged -- CTFE recurses through references, so it makes some sense to also recurse through function pointers. We might still want to relax this in the future, but that would be a separate change.

Change `char` type in debuginfo to DW_ATE_UTF

Rust previously encoded the `char` type as DW_ATE_unsigned_char. The more appropriate encoding is `DW_ATE_UTF`.

Clang also uses the DW_ATE_UTF for `char32_t` in C++.

This fixes the display of the `char` type in the Windows debuggers. Without this change, the variable did not show in the locals window.

37d9ea745b Improve scan_escape.
`scan_escape` currently has a fast path (for when the first char isn't
'\\') and a slow path.

This commit changes `scan_escape` so it only handles the slow path, i.e.
the actual escaping code. The fast path is inlined into the two call
sites.

This change makes the code faster, because there is no function call
overhead on the fast path. (`scan_escape` is a big function and doesn't
get inlined.)

This change also improves readability, because it removes a bunch of
mode checks on the the fast paths.

36b495f3cf Introduce ChunkedBitSet and use it for some dataflow analyses.
This reduces peak memory usage significantly for some programs with very
large functions, such as:
- `keccak`, `unicode_normalization`, and `match-stress-enum`, from
  the `rustc-perf` benchmark suite;
- `http-0.2.6` from crates.io.

The new type is used in the analyses where the bitsets can get huge
(e.g. 10s of thousands of bits): `MaybeInitializedPlaces`,
`MaybeUninitializedPlaces`, and `EverInitializedPlaces`.

Some refactoring was required in `rustc_mir_dataflow`. All existing
analysis domains are either `BitSet` or a trivial wrapper around
`BitSet`, and access in a few places is done via `Borrow<BitSet>` or
`BorrowMut<BitSet>`. Now that some of these domains are `ClusterBitSet`,
that no longer works. So this commit replaces the `Borrow`/`BorrowMut`
usage with a new trait `BitSetExt` containing the needed bitset
operations. The impls just forward these to the underlying bitset type.
This required fiddling with trait bounds in a few places.

The commit also:
- Moves `static_assert_size` from `rustc_data_structures` to
  `rustc_index` so it can be used in the latter; the former now
  re-exports it so existing users are unaffected.
- Factors out some common "clear excess bits in the final word"
  functionality in `bit_set.rs`.
- Uses `fill` in a few places instead of loops.

Simplify rustc_serialize by dropping support for decoding into JSON

This PR currently bundles two (somewhat separate) tasks.

First, it removes the JSON Decoder trait impl, which permitted going from JSON to Rust structs. For now, we keep supporting JSON deserialization, but only to `Json` (an equivalent of serde_json::Value). The primary hard to remove user there is for custom targets -- which need some form of JSON deserialization -- but they already have a custom ad-hoc pass for moving from Json to a Rust struct.

A [comment](e7aca89598/compiler/rustc_target/src/spec/mod.rs (L1653)) there suggests that it would be impractical to move them to a Decodable-based impl, at least without backwards compatibility concerns. I suspect that if we were widely breaking compat there, it would make sense to use serde_json at this point which would produce better error messages; the types in rustc_target are relatively isolated so we would not particularly suffer from using serde_derive.

The second part of the PR (all but the first commit) is to simplify the Decoder API by removing the non-primitive `read_*` functions. These primarily add indirection (through a closure), which doesn't directly cause a performance issue (the unique closure types essentially guarantee monomorphization), but does increase the amount of work rustc and LLVM need to do. This could be split out to a separate PR, but is included here in part to help motivate the first part.

Future work might consist of:

* Specializing enum discriminant encoding to avoid leb128 for small enums (since we know the variant count, we can directly use read/write u8 in almost all cases)
* Adding new methods to support faster deserialization (e.g., access to the underlying byte stream)
   * Currently these are somewhat ad-hoc supported by specializations for e.g. `Vec<u8>`, but other types which could benefit don't today.
* Removing the Decoder trait entirely in favor of a concrete type -- today, we only really have one impl of it modulo wrappers used for specialization-based dispatch.

Highly recommend review with whitespace changes off, as the removal of closures frequently causes things to be de-indented.

This PR has 3 relevant steps which are is split in distinct commits.

The first commit now interns `List<Ty<'tcx>>` and `List<GenericArg<'tcx>>` together, potentially reusing memory while allowing free conversions between these two using `List<Ty<'tcx>>::as_substs()` and `SubstsRef<'tcx>::try_as_type_list()`.

Using this, we then use `&'tcx List<Ty<'tcx>>` instead of a `SubstsRef<'tcx>` for tuple fields, simplifying a bunch of code.

Finally, as tuple fields and other generic arguments now use a different `TypeFoldable<'tcx>` impl, we optimize the impl for `List<Ty<'tcx>>` improving perf by slightly less than 1% in tuple heavy benchmarks.

Revert #93800, fixing CI time regression

This reverts commit a240ccd81c (merge commit of #93800), reversing
changes made to 393fdc1048.

This PR was likely responsible for a relatively large regression in
dist-x86_64-msvc-alt builder times, from approximately 1.7 to 2.8 hours,
bringing that builder into the pool of the slowest builders we currently have.

This seems to be limited to the alt builder due to needing parallel-compiler
enabled, likely leading to slow LLVM compilation for some reason. See some
investigation in [this Zulip stream](https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/242791-t-infra/topic/msvc.28.3F.29.20builders.20running.20much.20slower).

We can re-apply this PR once the regression is fixed, but it is sufficiently large that I don't think keeping this on master is viable in the meantime unless there's a very strong case to be made for it. Alternatively, we can disable that builder (it's not critical since it's an alt build), but that obviously carries its own costs.

e72e6399b1 debuginfo: Simplify TypeMap used during LLVM debuginfo generation.
The previous implementation was written before types were properly
normalized for code generation and had to assume a more complicated
relationship between types and their debuginfo -- generating separate
identifiers for debuginfo nodes that were based on normalized types.

Since types are now already normalized, we can use them as identifiers
for debuginfo nodes.

Consolidate normalization the obligation and expected trait refs in `confirm_poly_trait_refs`. Also, _always_ normalize these trait refs -- we were already normalizing the obligation trait ref when confirming closure and generator candidates, but this does it for fn pointer confirmation as well.

This presumably does more work in the case that the obligation's trait ref is already normalized, but we can see from the perf runs in #94070, it actually (paradoxically, perhaps) improves performance when paired with logic that normalizes projections in fulfillment loop.

8f8689fb31 Improve unused_unsafe lint
Main motivation: Fixes some issues with the current behavior. This PR is
more-or-less completely re-implementing the unused_unsafe lint; it’s also only
done in the MIR-version of the lint, the set of tests for the `-Zthir-unsafeck`
version no longer succeeds (and is thus disabled, see `lint-unused-unsafe.rs`).

On current nightly,

doesn’t create any warnings. This situation is not unrealistic to come by, the
inner `unsafe` block could e.g. come from a macro. Actually, this PR even
includes removal of one unused `unsafe` in the standard library that was missed
in a similar situation. (The inner `unsafe` coming from an external macro hides
    the warning, too.)

The reason behind this problem is how the check currently works:
* While generating MIR, it already skips nested unsafe blocks (i.e. unsafe
  nested in other unsafe) so that the inner one is always the one considered
  unused
* To differentiate the cases of no unsafe operations inside the `unsafe` vs.
  a surrounding `unsafe` block, there’s some ad-hoc magic walking up the HIR to
  look for surrounding used `unsafe` blocks.

There’s a lot of problems with this approach besides the one presented above.
E.g. the MIR-building uses checks for `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn` lint to decide
early whether or not `unsafe` blocks in an `unsafe fn` are redundant and ought
to be removed.

Also closures were problematic and the workaround/algorithms used on current
nightly didn’t work properly. (I skipped trying to fully understand what it was
supposed to do, because this PR uses a completely different approach.)

Needless to say, this PR addresses all these points. For context, as far as my
understanding goes, the main advantage of skipping inner unsafe blocks was that
a test case like

should generate some warning because there’s redundant nested `unsafe`, however
every single `unsafe` block _does_ contain some statement that uses it. Of course
this PR doesn’t aim change the warnings on this kind of code example, because
the current behavior, warning on all the inner `unsafe` blocks, makes sense in this case.

As mentioned, during MIR building all the unsafe blocks *are* kept now, and usage
is attributed to them. The way to still generate a warning like

in this case is by emitting a `unused_unsafe` warning for all of the `unsafe`
blocks that are _within a **used** unsafe block_.

The previous code had a little HIR traversal already anyways to collect a set of
all the unsafe blocks (in order to afterwards determine which ones are unused
afterwards). This PR uses such a traversal to do additional things including logic
like _always_ warn for an `unsafe` block that’s inside of another **used**
unsafe block. The traversal is expanded to include nested closures in the same go,
this simplifies a lot of things.

The whole logic around `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn` is a little complicated, there’s
some test cases of corner-cases in this PR. (The implementation involves
differentiating between whether a used unsafe block was used exclusively by
operations where `allow(unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn)` was active.) The main goal was
to make sure that code should compile successfully if all the `unused_unsafe`-warnings
are addressed _simultaneously_ (by removing the respective `unsafe` blocks)
no matter how complicated the patterns of `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn` being
disallowed and allowed throughout the function are.

One noteworthy design decision I took here: An `unsafe` block
with `allow(unused_unsafe)` **is considered used** for the purposes of
linting about redundant contained unsafe blocks. So while

The `uninhabited_enum_branching` mir opt eliminates branches on variants where the data is uninhabited. This change extends this pass to also ensure that the `otherwise` case points to a trivially unreachable bb if all inhabited variants are present in the non-otherwise branches.

I believe it was `@scottmcm` who said that LLVM eliminates some of this information in its SimplifyCFG pass. This is unfortunate, but this change should still be at least a small improvement in principle (I don't think it will show up on any benchmarks)

Guard against unwinding in cleanup code

Currently the only safe guard we have against double unwind is the panic count (which is local to Rust). When double unwinds indeed happen (e.g. C++ exception + Rust panic, or two C++ exceptions), then the second unwind actually goes through and the first unwind is leaked. This can cause UB. cc rust-lang/project-ffi-unwind#6

E.g. given the following C++ code:
```c++
extern "C" void foo() {
    throw "A";
}

extern "C" void execute(void (*fn)()) {
    try {
        fn();
    } catch(...) {
    }
}
```

This program is well-defined to terminate:
```c++
struct dtor {
    ~dtor() noexcept(false) {
        foo();
    }
};

void a() {
    dtor a;
    dtor b;
}

int main() {
    execute(a);
    return 0;
}
```

But this Rust code doesn't catch the double unwind:
```rust

    fn execute(f: unsafe extern "C-unwind" fn());

struct Dtor;

impl Drop for Dtor {
    fn drop(&mut self) {
        unsafe { foo(); }
    }
}

To address this issue, this PR adds an unwind edge to an abort block, so that the Rust example aborts. This is similar to how clang guards against double unwind (except clang calls terminate per C++ spec and we abort).

The cost should be very small; it's an additional trap instruction (well, two for now, since we use TrapUnreachable, but that's a different issue) for each function with landing pads; if LLVM gains support to encode "abort/terminate" info directly in LSDA like GCC does, then it'll be free. It's an additional basic block though so compile time may be worse, so I'd like a perf run.

b995dc944c No branch protection metadata unless enabled
Even if we emit metadata disabling branch protection, this metadata may
conflict with other modules (e.g. during LTO) that have different branch
protection metadata set.

This is an unstable flag and feature, so ideally the flag not being
specified should act as if the feature wasn't implemented in the first
place.

Additionally this PR also ensures we emit an error if
`-Zbranch-protection` is set on targets other than the supported
aarch64. For now the error is being output from codegen, but ideally it
should be moved to earlier in the pipeline before stabilization.

Add MemTagSanitizer Support

Add support for the LLVM [MemTagSanitizer](https://llvm.org/docs/MemTagSanitizer.html).

On hardware which supports it (see caveats below), the MemTagSanitizer can catch bugs similar to AddressSanitizer and HardwareAddressSanitizer, but with lower overhead.

On a tag mismatch, a SIGSEGV is signaled with code SEGV_MTESERR / SEGV_MTEAERR.

`-Zsanitizer=memtag -C target-feature="+mte"`

# Comments/Caveats

* MemTagSanitizer is only supported on AArch64 targets with hardware support
* Requires `-C target-feature="+mte"`

Address #85991

Suggest the `impl Trait` return type syntax if the user tried to return a generic parameter and we get a type mismatch

The suggestion is not emitted if the param appears in the function parameters, and only get the bounds that actually involve `T: ` directly

It also checks whether the generic param is contained in any where bound (where it isn't the self type), and if one is found (like `Option<T>: Send`), it is not suggested.

This also adds `TyS::contains`, which recursively vistits the type and looks if the other type is contained anywhere

We use `normalize_param_env_or_error` to verify that the predicates in the param env are self-consistent, since with RevealAll, a bad predicate like `<&'static () as Clone>` will be evaluated with an empty ParamEnv (since it references no generics), and we'll raise an error for it.

finally cracked it.

This commit improves the comments. In particular, it explicitly
describes how you can't do a custom fold/visit of any type; there are
actually a handful of "types of interest" (e.g. `Ty`, `Predicate`,
`Region`, `Const`) that can be custom folded/visted, and all other types
just get a generic traversal. I think this was the part that eluded me
on all my prior attempts at understanding.

The commit also updates comments to account for some newer changes such
as the fallible/infallible folding distinction, does some minor
reorderings, and moves one `impl` to a better place.

This came up from some user on Discord which was using a `T : PrimitiveInt` generic type, and they wanted to use in a `union`. Rather than adding a `Copy` bound, they started pondering about the `ManuallyDrop<T>` road, and how to correctly use `unsafe` to perform the drops.

074d757bc6 Consider mutations as borrows in drop tracking
This is needed to match MIR more conservative approximation of any
borrowed value being live across a suspend point (See #94067). This
change considers an expression such as `x.y = z` to be a borrow of `x`
and therefore keeps `x` live across suspend points.

llvm: migrate to new parameter-bearing uwtable attr

In https://reviews.llvm.org/D114543 the uwtable attribute gained a flag
so that we can ask for sync uwtables instead of async, as the former are
much cheaper. The default is async, so that's what I've done here, but I
left a TODO that we might be able to do better.

While in here I went ahead and dropped support for removing uwtable
attributes in rustc: we never did it, so I didn't write the extra C++
bridge code to make it work. Maybe I should have done the same thing
with the `sync|async` parameter but we'll see.

suggest using raw strings when invalid escapes appear in literals

i'd guess about 70% of "bad escape" cases occur when someone meant to use a raw string literal because they're passing it directly to `Regex::new()`.
this emits an advisory (`Applicability::MaybeIncorrect`) `help:` suggestion to the user that they use an `r""` string, on top of the normal notes about looking at the string literal documentation/spec.

Overhaul interning.

A number of types are interned and `eq` and `hash` are implemented on
the pointer rather than the contents. But this is not well enforced
within the type system like you might expect.

This PR introduces a new type `Interned` which encapsulates this concept

`pin!` allows pinning a value to the stack. review such a hypothetical macro (that any user-code could define):

  - `type P = &mut _`. There are thus no pathological `Deref{,Mut}` impls that would break `Pin`'s invariants.

  - Issues such as this one are the ones motivating https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/66

This makes such a macro incredibly unergonomic in practice, and the reason most macros out there had to take the path of being a statement/binding macro (_e.g._, `pin!(future);`) instead of featuring the more intuitive ergonomics of an expression macro.

Luckily, there is a way to avoid the problem. Indeed, the problem stems from the fact that a temporary is dropped at the end of its enclosing statement when it is part of the parameters given to function call, which has precisely been the case with our `Pin::new_unchecked()`!

For instance,

```rust
let p = Pin::new_unchecked(&mut <temporary>);
```

becomes:

```rust
let p = { let mut anon = <temporary>; &mut anon };
```

However, when using a literal braced struct to construct the value, references to temporaries can then be taken. This makes Rust change the lifespan of such temporaries so that they are, instead, dropped _at the end of the enscoping block_.

For instance,
```rust
let p = Pin { pointer: &mut <temporary> };
```

becomes:

```rust
let mut anon = <temporary>;
let p = Pin { pointer: &mut anon };
```

which is *exactly* what we want.

Finally, we don't hit problems _w.r.t._ the privacy of the `pointer` field, or the unqualified `Pin` name, thanks to `decl_macro`s being _fully_ hygienic (`def_site` hygiene).

a95fb8b150 Overhaul Const.
Specifically, rename the `Const` struct as `ConstS` and re-introduce `Const` as
this:
```
pub struct Const<'tcx>(&'tcx Interned<ConstS>);
```
This now matches `Ty` and `Predicate` more closely, including using
pointer-based `eq` and `hash`.

Notable changes:
- `mk_const` now takes a `ConstS`.
- `Const` was copy, despite being 48 bytes. Now `ConstS` is not, so need a
  we need separate arena for it, because we can't use the `Dropless` one any
  more.
- Many `&'tcx Const<'tcx>`/`&Const<'tcx>` to `Const<'tcx>` changes
- Many `ct.ty` to `ct.ty()` and `ct.val` to `ct.val()` changes.
- Lots of tedious sigil fiddling.

7eb15509ce Remove unnecessary RegionKind:: quals.
The variant names are exported, so we can use them directly (possibly
with a `ty::` qualifier). Lots of places already do this, this commit
just increases consistency.

7024dc523a Overhaul RegionKind and Region.
Specifically, change `Region` from this:
```
pub type Region<'tcx> = &'tcx RegionKind;
```
to this:
```
pub struct Region<'tcx>(&'tcx Interned<RegionKind>);
```

This now matches `Ty` and `Predicate` more closely.

Things to note
- Regions have always been interned, but we haven't been using pointer-based
  `Eq` and `Hash`. This is now happening.
- I chose to impl `Deref` for `Region` because it makes pattern matching a lot
  nicer, and `Region` can be viewed as just a smart wrapper for `RegionKind`.
- Various methods are moved from `RegionKind` to `Region`.
- There is a lot of tedious sigil changes.
- A couple of types like `HighlightBuilder`, `RegionHighlightMode` now have a
  `'tcx` lifetime because they hold a `Ty<'tcx>`, so they can call `mk_region`.
- A couple of test outputs change slightly, I'm not sure why, but the new
  outputs are a little better.

925ec0d3c7 Overhaul PredicateInner and Predicate.
Specifically, change `Ty` from this:

to this:

```
where `PredicateInner` is renamed as `PredicateS`.

 This (plus a few other minor changes) makes the parallels with `Ty` and
`TyS` much clearer, and makes the uniqueness more explicit.

e9a0c429c5 Overhaul TyS and Ty.
Specifically, change `Ty` from this:
```
pub type Ty<'tcx> = &'tcx TyS<'tcx>;
```
to this
```
pub struct Ty<'tcx>(Interned<'tcx, TyS<'tcx>>);
```
There are two benefits to this.
- It's now a first class type, so we can define methods on it. This
  means we can move a lot of methods away from `TyS`, leaving `TyS` as a
  barely-used type, which is appropriate given that it's not meant to
  be used directly.
- The uniqueness requirement is now explicit, via the `Interned` type.
  E.g. the pointer-based `Eq` and `Hash` comes from `Interned`, rather
  than via `TyS`, which wasn't obvious at all.

Much of this commit is boring churn. The interesting changes are in
these files:
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/arena.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/mir/visit.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/context.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/mod.rs

Specifically:
- Most mentions of `TyS` are removed. It's very much a dumb struct now;
  `Ty` has all the smarts.
- `TyS` now has `crate` visibility instead of `pub`.
- `TyS::make_for_test` is removed in favour of the static `BOOL_TY`,
  which just works better with the new structure.
- The `Eq`/`Ord`/`Hash` impls are removed from `TyS`. `Interned`s impls
  of `Eq`/`Hash` now suffice. `Ord` is now partly on `Interned`
  (pointer-based, for the `Equal` case) and partly on `TyS`
  (contents-based, for the other cases).
- There are many tedious sigil adjustments, i.e. adding or removing `*`
  or `&`. They seem to be unavoidable.

0c2ebbd412 Rename PtrKey as Interned and improve it.
In particular, there's now more protection against incorrect usage,
because you can only create one via `Interned::new_unchecked`, which
makes it more obvious that you must be careful.

There are also some tests.
