...and remove it from `PointeeInfo`, which isn't meant for this.
There are still various places (marked with FIXMEs) that assume all pointers
have the same size and alignment. Fixing this requires parsing non-default
address spaces in the data layout string, which will be done in a followup.
Pass 128-bit C-style enum enumerator values to LLVM
Pass the full 128 bits of C-style enum enumerators through to LLVM. This means that debuginfo for C-style repr128 enums is now emitted correctly for DWARF platforms (as compared to not being correctly emitted on any platform).

DWARF version 5 brings a number of improvements over version 4. Quoting from
the announcement [1]:
> Version 5 incorporates improvements in many areas: better data compression,
> separation of debugging data from executable files, improved description of
> macros and source files, faster searching for symbols, improved debugging
> optimized code, as well as numerous improvements in functionality and
> performance.
On platforms where DWARF version 5 is supported (Linux, primarily), this commit
adds support for it behind a new `-Z dwarf-version=5` flag.

This adds the typeid and `vcall_visibility` metadata to vtables when the
-Cvirtual-function-elimination flag is set.
The typeid is generated in the same way as for the
`llvm.type.checked.load` intrinsic from the trait_ref.
The offset that is added to the typeid is always 0. This is because LLVM
assumes that vtables are constructed according to the definition in the
Itanium ABI. This includes an "address point" of the vtable. In C++ this
is the offset in the vtable where information for RTTI is placed. Since
there is no RTTI information in Rust's vtables, this "address point" is
always 0. This "address point" in combination with the offset passed to
the `llvm.type.checked.load` intrinsic determines the final function
that should be loaded from the vtable in the
`WholeProgramDevirtualization` pass in LLVM. That's why the
`llvm.type.checked.load` intrinsics are generated with the typeid of the
trait, rather than with that of the function that is called. This
matches what `clang` does for C++.
The vcall_visibility metadata depends on three factors:
1. LTO level: Currently this is always fat LTO, because LLVM only
supports this optimization with fat LTO.
2. Visibility of the trait: If the trait is publicly visible, VFE
can only act on its vtables after linking.
3. Number of CGUs: if there is more than one CGU, also vtables with
restricted visibility could be seen outside of the CGU, so VFE can
only act on them after linking.
To reflect this, there are three visibility levels: Public, LinkageUnit,
and TranslationUnit.
In DWARF, alignment of types is specified in bits, as is made clear by the
parameter name `AlignInBits`. However, `rustc` was incorrectly passing a byte
alignment. This commit fixes that.
This was noticed in upstream LLVM when I tried to check in a test consisting of
LLVM IR generated from `rustc` and it triggered assertions [1].

Begin fixing all the broken doctests in `compiler/`
Begins to fix#95994.
All of them pass now but 24 of them I've marked with `ignore HELP (<explanation>)` (asking for help) as I'm unsure how to get them to work / if we should leave them as they are.
There are also a few that I marked `ignore` that could maybe be made to work but seem less important.
Each `ignore` has a rough "reason" for ignoring after it parentheses, with
- `(pseudo-rust)` meaning "mostly rust-like but contains foreign syntax"
- `(illustrative)` a somewhat catchall for either a fragment of rust that doesn't stand on its own (like a lone type), or abbreviated rust with ellipses and undeclared types that would get too cluttered if made compile-worthy.
- `(not-rust)` stuff that isn't rust but benefits from the syntax highlighting, like MIR.
- `(internal)` uses `rustc_*` code which would be difficult to make work with the testing setup.
Those reason notes are a bit inconsistently applied and messy though. If that's important I can go through them again and try a more principled approach. When I run `rg '```ignore \(' .` on the repo, there look to be lots of different conventions other people have used for this sort of thing. I could try unifying them all if that would be helpful.

Only crate root def-ids don't have a parent, and in majority of cases the argument of `DefIdTree::parent` cannot be a crate root.
So we now panic by default in `parent` and introduce a new non-panicing function `opt_parent` for cases where the argument can be a crate root.
Same applies to `local_parent`/`opt_local_parent`.
Skip needless bitset for debuginfo
Found this while digging around looking at the inlining logic.
Seemed obvious enough so I decided to try to take care of it.

Before this fix, the debuginfo for the fields was generated from the
struct defintion of Box<T>, but (at least at the moment) the compiler
pretends that Box<T> is just a (fat) pointer, so the fields need to be
`pointer` and `vtable` instead of `__0: Unique<T>` and `__1: Allocator`.
This is meant as a temporary mitigation until we can make sure that
simply treating Box as a regular struct in debuginfo does not cause too
much breakage in the ecosystem.
This commit
- changes names to use di_node instead of metadata
- uniformly names all functions that build new debuginfo nodes build_xyz_di_node
- renames CrateDebugContext to CodegenUnitDebugContext (which is more accurate)
- moves TypeMap and functions that work directly work with it to a new type_map module
- moves and reimplements enum related builder functions to a new enums module
- splits enum debuginfo building for the native and cpp-like cases, since they are mostly separate
- uses SmallVec instead of Vec in many places
- removes the old infrastructure for dealing with recursion cycles (create_and_register_recursive_type_forward_declaration(), RecursiveTypeDescription, set_members_of_composite_type(), MemberDescription, MemberDescriptionFactory, prepare_xyz_metadata(), etc)

debuginfo: Simplify TypeMap used during LLVM debuginfo generation.
This PR simplifies the TypeMap that is used in `rustc_codegen_llvm::debuginfo::metadata`. It was unnecessarily complicated because it was originally implemented when types were not yet normalized before codegen. So it did it's own normalization and kept track of multiple unnormalized types being mapped to a single unique id.
This PR is based on https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/93503, which is not merged yet.
The PR also removes the arena used for allocating string ids and instead uses `InlinableString` from the [inlinable_string](https://crates.io/crates/inlinable_string) crate. That might not be the best choice, since that crate does not seem to be very actively maintained. The [flexible-string](https://crates.io/crates/flexible-string) crate would be an alternative.

Rust previously encoded the `char` type as DW_ATE_unsigned_char. The more
appropriate encoding is DW_ATE_UTF.
Clang uses this same debug encoding for char32_t.
This fixes the display of `char` types in Windows debuggers as well as LLDB.
The previous implementation was written before types were properly
normalized for code generation and had to assume a more complicated
relationship between types and their debuginfo -- generating separate
identifiers for debuginfo nodes that were based on normalized types.
Since types are now already normalized, we can use them as identifiers
for debuginfo nodes.
Adopt let else in more places
Continuation of #89933, #91018, #91481, #93046, #93590, #94011.
I have extended my clippy lint to also recognize tuple passing and match statements. The diff caused by fixing it is way above 1 thousand lines. Thus, I split it up into multiple pull requests to make reviewing easier. This is the biggest of these PRs and handles the changes outside of rustdoc, rustc_typeck, rustc_const_eval, rustc_trait_selection, which were handled in PRs #94139, #94142, #94143, #94144.
Specifically, change `Ty` from this:

There are two benefits to this.
- It's now a first class type, so we can define methods on it. This
means we can move a lot of methods away from `TyS`, leaving `TyS` as a
barely-used type, which is appropriate given that it's not meant to
be used directly.
- The uniqueness requirement is now explicit, via the `Interned` type.
E.g. the pointer-based `Eq` and `Hash` comes from `Interned`, rather
than via `TyS`, which wasn't obvious at all.
Much of this commit is boring churn. The interesting changes are in
these files:
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/arena.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/mir/visit.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/context.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/mod.rs
Specifically:
- Most mentions of `TyS` are removed. It's very much a dumb struct now;
`Ty` has all the smarts.
- `TyS` now has `crate` visibility instead of `pub`.
- `TyS::make_for_test` is removed in favour of the static `BOOL_TY`,
which just works better with the new structure.
- The `Eq`/`Ord`/`Hash` impls are removed from `TyS`. `Interned`s impls
of `Eq`/`Hash` now suffice. `Ord` is now partly on `Interned`
(pointer-based, for the `Equal` case) and partly on `TyS`
(contents-based, for the other cases).
- There are many tedious sigil adjustments, i.e. adding or removing `*`
or `&`. They seem to be unavoidable.
debuginfo: Make sure that type names for closure and generator environments are unique in debuginfo.
Before this change, closure/generator environments coming from different instantiations of the same generic function were all assigned the same name even though they were distinct types with potentially different data layout. Now we append the generic arguments of the originating function to the type name.
This commit also emits `{closure_env#0}` as the name of these types in order to disambiguate them from the accompanying closure function (which keeps being called `{closure#0}`). Previously both were assigned the same name.
NOTE: Changing debuginfo names like this can break pretty printers and other debugger plugins. I think it's OK in this particular case because the names we are changing were ambiguous anyway. In general though it would be great to have a process for doing changes like these.
Before this change, closure/generator environments coming from different

Fix debuginfo for pointers/references to unsized types
This PR makes the compiler emit fat pointer debuginfo in all cases. Before, we sometimes got thin-pointer debuginfo, making it impossible to fully interpret the pointed to memory in debuggers. The code is actually cleaner now, especially around generation of trait object pointer debuginfo.

LLDB does not seem to see fields if they are marked with DW_AT_artificial
which breaks pretty printers that use these fields for decoding fat pointers.
Use error-on-mismatch policy for PAuth module flags.
This agrees with Clang, and avoids an error when using LTO with mixed
C/Rust. LLVM considers different behaviour flags to be a mismatch,
even when the flag value itself is the same.
This also makes the flag setting explicit for all uses of
LLVMRustAddModuleFlag.

I believe that this fixes#92885, but have only reproduced it locally on Linux hosts so cannot confirm that it fixes the issue as reported.
I have not included a test for this because it is covered by an existing test (`src/test/run-make-fulldeps/cross-lang-lto-clang`). It is not without its problems, though:
* The test requires Clang and `--run-clang-based-tests-with=...` to run, and this is not the case on the CI.
* Any test I add would have a similar requirement.
* With this patch applied, the test gets further, but it still fails (for other reasons). I don't think that affects #92885.

The field is also renamed from `ident` to `name. In most cases,
we don't actually need the `Span`. A new `ident` method is added
to `VariantDef` and `FieldDef`, which constructs the full `Ident`
using `tcx.def_ident_span()`. This method is used in the cases
where we actually need an `Ident`.
This makes incremental compilation properly track changes
to the `Span`, without all of the invalidations caused by storing
a `Span` directly via an `Ident`.

If the target we're generating code for is msvc, then we do two main
things differently: we generate type names in a C++ style instead of a
Rust style and we generate debuginfo for enums differently.
I've refactored the code so that there is one function

I've refactored the code so that there is one function
(`cpp_like_debuginfo`) which determines if we should use the C++ style
of naming types and other debuginfo generation or the regular Rust one.
In #79570, `-Z split-dwarf-kind={none,single,split}` was replaced by `-C
split-debuginfo={off,packed,unpacked}`. `-C split-debuginfo`'s packed
and unpacked aren't exact parallels to single and split, respectively.
On Unix, `-C split-debuginfo=packed` will put debuginfo into object
files and package debuginfo into a DWARF package file (`.dwp`) and
`-C split-debuginfo=unpacked` will put debuginfo into dwarf object files
and won't package it.
In the initial implementation of Split DWARF, split mode wrote sections
which did not require relocation into a DWARF object (`.dwo`) file which
was ignored by the linker and then packaged those DWARF objects into
DWARF packages (`.dwp`). In single mode, sections which did not require
relocation were written into object files but ignored by the linker and
were not packaged. However, both split and single modes could be
packaged or not, the primary difference in behaviour was where the
debuginfo sections that did not require link-time relocation were
written (in a DWARF object or the object file).
This commit re-introduces a `-Z split-dwarf-kind` flag, which can be
used to pick between split and single modes when `-C split-debuginfo` is
used to enable Split DWARF (either packed or unpacked).

rustc_codegen_llvm: Give each codegen unit a unique DWARF name on all platforms, not just Apple ones.
To avoid breaking split DWARF, we need to ensure that each codegen unit has a
unique `DW_AT_name`. This is because there's a remote chance that different
codegen units for the same module will have entirely identical DWARF entries
for the purpose of the DWO ID, which would violate Appendix F ("Split Dwarf
Object Files") of the DWARF 5 specification. LLVM uses the algorithm specified
in section 7.32 "Type Signature Computation" to compute the DWO ID, which does
not include any fields that would distinguish compilation units. So we must
embed the codegen unit name into the `DW_AT_name`.

Remove `in_band_lifetimes` from `rustc_codegen_llvm`
See #91867 for more information.
This one took a while. This crate has dozens of functions not associated with any type, and most of them were using in-band lifetimes for `'ll` and `'tcx`.
Apply path remapping to DW_AT_GNU_dwo_name when producing split DWARF
`--remap-path-prefix` doesn't apply to paths to `.o` (in case of packed) or `.dwo` (in case of unpacked) files in `DW_AT_GNU_dwo_name`. GCC also has this bug https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=91888
platforms, not just Apple ones.

By changing `as_str()` to take `&self` instead of `self`, we can just
return `&str`. We're still lying about lifetimes, but it's a smaller lie
than before, where `SymbolStr` contained a (fake) `&'static str`!
Create more accurate debuginfo for vtables.
Before this PR all vtables would have the same name (`"vtable"`) in debuginfo. Now they get an unambiguous name that identifies the implementing type and the trait that is being implemented.
This is only one of several possible improvements:
- This PR describes vtables as arrays of `*const u8` pointers. It would nice to describe them as structs where function pointer is represented by a field with a name indicative of the method it maps to. However, this requires coming up with a naming scheme that avoids clashes between methods with the same name (which is possible if the vtable contains multiple traits).
- The PR does not update the debuginfo we generate for the vtable-pointer field in a fat `dyn` pointer. Right now there does not seem to be an easy way of getting ahold of a vtable-layout without also knowing the concrete self-type of a trait object.

Before this commit all vtables would have the same name "vtable" in
debuginfo. Now they get a name that identifies the implementing type
and the trait that is being implemented.
Using symbol::Interner makes it very easy to mixup UniqueTypeId symbols
with the global interner. In fact the Debug implementation of
UniqueTypeId did exactly this.
Using a separate interner type also avoids prefilling the interner with
unused symbols and allow for optimizing the symbol interner for parallel
access without negatively affecting the single threaded module codegen.
Provide `layout_of` automatically (given tcx + param_env + error handling).
After #88337, there's no longer any uses of `LayoutOf` within `rustc_target` itself, so I realized I could move the trait to `rustc_middle::ty::layout` and redesign it a bit.
This is similar to #88338 (and supersedes it), but at no ergonomic loss, since there's no funky `C: LayoutOf<Ty = Ty>` -> `Ty: TyAbiInterface<C>` generic `impl` chain, and each `LayoutOf` still corresponds to one `impl` (of `LayoutOfHelpers`) for the specific context.
After this PR, this is what's needed to get `trait LayoutOf` (with the `layout_of` method) implemented on some context type:
* `TyCtxt`, via `HasTyCtxt`
* `ParamEnv`, via `HasParamEnv`
* a way to transform `LayoutError`s into the desired error type
* an error type of `!` can be paired with having `cx.layout_of(...)` return `TyAndLayout` *without* `Result<...>` around it, such as used by codegen
* this is done through a new `LayoutOfHelpers` trait (and so is specifying the type of `cx.layout_of(...)`)
When going through this path (and not bypassing it with a manual `impl` of `LayoutOf`), the end result is that only the error case can be customized, the query itself and the success paths are guaranteed to be uniform.
(**EDIT**: just noticed that because of the supertrait relationship, you cannot actually implement `LayoutOf` yourself, the blanket `impl` fully covers all possible context types that could ever implement it)
Part of the motivation for this shape of API is that I've been working on querifying `FnAbi::of_*`, and what I want/need to introduce for that looks a lot like the setup in this PR - in particular, it's harder to express the `FnAbi` methods in `rustc_target`, since they're much more tied to `rustc` concepts.

* Modify the `debuginfo` code to allow creating debug info for a module without a `CodegenCx` (since it is difficult, and expensive, to create one just to emit some debug info).
* After creating the allocator shim add in basic debug info.

A `SourceFile` created during compilation may have a relative
path (e.g. if rustc itself is invoked with a relative path).
When we write out crate metadata, we convert all relative paths
to absolute paths using the current working direction.
However, the working directory is not included in the crate hash.
This means that the crate metadata can change while the crate
hash remains the same. Among other problems, this can cause a
fingerprint mismatch ICE, since incremental compilation uses
the crate metadata hash to determine if a foreign query is green.
This commit moves the field holding the working directory from
`Session` to `Options`, including it as part of the crate hash.
Name the captured upvars for closures/generators in debuginfo
Previously, debuggers print closures as something like

Previously, only the fields would be displayed with no indication of the
variant name. If you already knew the enum was univariant, this was ok
but if the enum was univariant because of layout, for example, a
`Result<T, !>` then it could be very confusing which variant was the
active one.
Previously, directly tagged enums had a `variant$` field which would
show the name of the active variant. We now show the variant using a
`[variant]` synthetic item just like we do for niche-layout enums.
There are several cases where names of types and functions in the debug info are either ambiguous, or not helpful, such as including ambiguous placeholders (e.g., `{{impl}}`, `{{closure}}` or `dyn _'`) or dropping qualifications (e.g., for dynamic types).
Instead, each debug symbol name should be unique and useful:
* Include disambiguators for anonymous `DefPathDataName` (closures and generators), and unify their formatting when used as a path-qualifier vs item being qualified.
* Qualify the principal trait for dynamic types.
* If there is no principal trait for a dynamic type, emit all other traits instead.
* Respect the `qualified` argument when emitting ref and pointer types.
* For implementations, emit the disambiguator.
* Print const generics when emitting generic parameters or arguments.
Additionally, when targeting MSVC, its debugger treats many command arguments as C++ expressions, even when the argument is defined to be a symbol name. As such names in the debug info need to be more C++-like to be parsed correctly:
* Avoid characters with special meaning (`#`, `[`, `"`, `+`).
* Never start a name with `<` or `{` as this is treated as an operator.
* `>>` is always treated as a right-shift, even when parsing generic arguments (so add a space to avoid this).
* Emit function declarations using C/C++ style syntax (e.g., leading return type).
* Emit arrays as a synthetic `array$<type, size>` type.
* Include a `$` in all synthetic types as this is a legal character for C++, but not Rust (thus we avoid collisions with user types).
Previously, we would generate a single struct with the layout of the
dataful variant plus an extra field whose name contained the value of
the niche (this would only really work for things like `Option<&_>`
where we can determine that the `None` case maps to `0` but for enums
that have multiple tag only variants, this doesn't work).
Now, we generate a union of two structs, one which is the layout of the
dataful variant and one which just has a way of reading the
discriminant. We also generate an enum which maps the discriminant value
to the tag only variants.
We also encode information about the range of values which correspond to
the dataful variant in the type name and then use natvis to determine
which union field we should display to the user.
As a result of this change, all niche-layout enums render correctly in
WinDbg and Visual Studio!
This wasn't necessary for msvc and caused issues where different types
with the same name such as different instantiations of `Option<T>` would
have colliding debuginfo. This confused the debugger which would pick
one of the type definitions and use for all types with that name even
though they had different layout.
Remove CrateNum parameter for queries that only work on local crate
The pervasive `CrateNum` parameter is a remnant of the multi-crate rustc idea.
Using `()` as query key in those cases avoids having to worry about the validity of the query key.
Fix `--remap-path-prefix` not correctly remapping `rust-src` component paths and unify handling of path mapping with virtualized paths
This PR fixes#73167 ("Binaries end up containing path to the rust-src component despite `--remap-path-prefix`") by preventing real local filesystem paths from reaching compilation output if the path is supposed to be remapped.
`RealFileName::Named` introduced in #72767 is now renamed as `LocalPath`, because this variant wraps a (most likely) valid local filesystem path.
`RealFileName::Devirtualized` is renamed as `Remapped` to be used for remapped path from a real path via `--remap-path-prefix` argument, as well as real path inferred from a virtualized (during compiler bootstrapping) `/rustc/...` path. The `local_path` field is now an `Option<PathBuf>`, as it will be set to `None` before serialisation, so it never reaches any build output. Attempting to serialise a non-`None` `local_path` will cause an assertion faliure.
When a path is remapped, a `RealFileName::Remapped` variant is created. The original path is preserved in `local_path` field and the remapped path is saved in `virtual_name` field. Previously, the `local_path` is directly modified which goes against its purpose of "suitable for reading from the file system on the local host".
`rustc_span::SourceFile`'s fields `unmapped_path` (introduced by #44940) and `name_was_remapped` (introduced by #41508 when `--remap-path-prefix` feature originally added) are removed, as these two pieces of information can be inferred from the `name` field: if it's anything other than a `FileName::Real(_)`, or if it is a `FileName::Real(RealFileName::LocalPath(_))`, then clearly `name_was_remapped` would've been false and `unmapped_path` would've been `None`. If it is a `FileName::Real(RealFileName::Remapped{local_path, virtual_name})`, then `name_was_remapped` would've been true and `unmapped_path` would've been `Some(local_path)`.

Fix debuginfo for generators
First, all fields except the discriminant (including `outer_fields`) should be put into structures inside the variant part, which gives an equivalent layout but offers us much better integration with debuggers.
Second, artificial flags in generator variants should be removed.
- Literally, variants are not artificial. We have `yield` statements, upvars and inner variables in the source code.
- Functionally, we don't want debuggers to suppress the variants. It contains the state of the generator, which is useful when debugging. So they shouldn't be marked artificial.
- Debuggers may use artificial flags to find the active variant. In this case, marking variants artificial will make debuggers not work properly.
