I didn't do anything for cranelift -- ``@bjorn3`` not sure if it's okay for that backend to temporarily break. I'm happy to cherry-pick a patch that adds cranelift support. :)

The codegen crate contains the code to convert from MIR into LLVM IR, and then from LLVM IR into machine code. In general it contains code that runs towards the end of the compilation process.
