Update the alignment checks to match rust-lang/reference#1387

Previously, we had a special case to not check `Rvalue::AddressOf` in this pass because we weren't quite sure if pointers needed to be aligned in the Place passed to it: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/112026

Since https://github.com/rust-lang/reference/pull/1387 merged, this PR updates this pass to match. The behavior of the check is nearly unchanged, except we also avoid inserting a check for creating references. Most of the changes in this PR are cleanup and new tests.

Support enum variants in offset_of!

This MR implements support for navigating through enum variants in `offset_of!`, placing the enum variant name in the second argument to `offset_of!`. The RFC placed it in the first argument, but I think it interacts better with nested field access in the second, as you can then write things like

```rust
offset_of!(Type, field.Variant.field)
```

Alternatively, a syntactic distinction could be made between variants and fields (e.g. `field::Variant.field`) but I'm not convinced this would be helpful.

Replace switch to unreachable by assume statements

`UnreachablePropagation` currently keeps some switch terminators alive in order to ensure codegen can infer the inequalities on the discriminants.

This PR proposes to encode those inequalities as `Assume` statements.

This allows to simplify MIR further by removing some useless terminators.

6d956a228b coverage: Replace impossible coverage::Error with assertions
Historically, these errors existed so that the coverage debug code could dump
additional information before reporting a compiler bug. That debug code was
removed by #115962, so we can now simplify these methods by making them panic
when they detect a bug.

See through aggregates in GVN

This PR is extracted from https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/111344

The first 2 commit are cleanups to avoid repeated work. I propose to stop removing useless assignments as part of this pass, and let a later `SimplifyLocals` do it. This makes tests easier to read (among others).

The next 3 commits add a constant folding mechanism to the GVN pass, presented in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/116012. ~This pass is designed to only use global allocations, to avoid any risk of accidental modification of the stored state.~

The following commits implement opportunistic simplifications, in particular:
- projections of aggregates: `MyStruct { x: a }.x` gets replaced by `a`, works with enums too;
- projections of arrays: `[a, b][0]` becomes `a`;
- projections of repeat expressions: `[a; N][x]` becomes `a`;
- transform arrays of equal operands into a repeat rvalue.

This PR implements `gen` blocks that implement `Iterator`. Most of the logic with `async` blocks is shared, and thus I renamed various types that were referring to `async` specifically.

An example usage of `gen` blocks is

```rust
fn foo() -> impl Iterator<Item = i32> {
    gen {
        yield 42;
        for i in 5..18 {
            if i.is_even() { continue }
            yield i * 2;
        }
    }
}
```

The limitations (to be resolved) of the implementation are listed in the tracking issue

Require target features to match exactly during inlining

In general it is not correct to inline a callee with a target features
that are subset of the callee. Require target features to match exactly
during inlining.

The exact match could be potentially relaxed, but this would require
identifying specific feature that are allowed to differ, those that need
to match, and those that can be present in caller but not in callee.

This resolves MIR part of #116573. For other concerns with respect to
the previous implementation also see areInlineCompatible in LLVM.

Separate move path tracking between borrowck and drop elaboration.

The primary goal of this PR is to skip creating a `MovePathIndex` for path that do not need dropping in drop elaboration.

The 2 first commits are cleanups.

The next 2 commits displace `move` errors from move-path builder to borrowck. Move-path builder keeps the same logic, but does not carry error information any more.

The remaining commits allow to filter `MovePathIndex` creation according to types. This is used in drop elaboration, to avoid computing dataflow for paths that do not need dropping.

Implement jump threading MIR opt

This pass is an attempt to generalize `ConstGoto` and `SeparateConstSwitch` passes into a more complete jump threading pass.

This pass is rather heavy, as it performs a truncated backwards DFS on MIR starting from each `SwitchInt` terminator. This backwards DFS remains very limited, as it only walks through `Goto` terminators.

It is build to support constants and discriminants, and a propagating through a very limited set of operations.

The pass successfully manages to disentangle the `Some(x?)` use case and the DFA use case. It still needs a few tests before being ready.

coverage: Fix inconsistent handling of function signature spans

While doing some more cleanup of `spans`, I noticed a strange inconsistency in how function signatures are handled. Normally the function signature span is treated as though it were executable as part of the start of the function, but in some cases the signature span disappears entirely from coverage, for no obvious reason.

This is caused by the fact that spans created by `CoverageSpan::for_fn_sig` don't add the span to their `merged_spans` field (unlike normal statement/terminator spans). In cases where the span-processing code looks at those merged spans, it thinks the signature span is no longer visible and deletes it.

Adding the signature span to `merged_spans` resolves the inconsistency.

(Prior to #116409 this wouldn't have been possible, because there was no case in the old `CoverageStatement` enum representing a signature. Now that `merged_spans` is just a list of spans, that's no longer an obstacle.)

13b2d604ec coverage: Store expression data in function coverage info
Even though expression details are now stored in the info structure, we still
need to inject `ExpressionUsed` statements into MIR, because if one is missing
during codegen then we know that it was optimized out and we can remap all of
its associated code regions to zero.

6da319f635 coverage: Store all of a function's mappings in function coverage info
Previously, mappings were attached to individual coverage statements in MIR.
That necessitated special handling in MIR optimizations to avoid deleting those
statements, since otherwise codegen would be unable to reassemble the original
list of mappings.

With this change, a function's list of mappings is now attached to its MIR
body, and survives intact even if individual statements are deleted by
optimizations.

a18c5f3b75 coverage: Store the number of counters/expressions in function coverage info
Coverage codegen can now allocate arrays based on the number of
counters/expressions originally used by the instrumentor.

The existing query that inspects coverage statements is still used for
determining the number of counters passed to `llvm.instrprof.increment`. If
some high-numbered counters were removed by MIR optimizations, the instrumented
binary can potentially use less memory and disk space at runtime.

c479bc7f3b coverage: Attach an optional FunctionCoverageInfo to mir::Body
This allows coverage information to be attached to the function as a whole when
appropriate, instead of being smuggled through coverage statements in the
function's basic blocks.

As an example, this patch moves the `function_source_hash` value out of
individual `CoverageKind::Counter` statements and into the per-function info.

When synthesizing unused functions for coverage purposes, the absence of this
info is taken to indicate that a function was not eligible for coverage and
should not be synthesized.

Format all the let-chains in compiler crates

Since rust-lang/rustfmt#5910 has landed, soon we will have support for formatting let-chains (as soon as rustfmt syncs and beta gets bumped).

This PR applies the changes [from master rustfmt to rust-lang/rust eagerly](https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/122651-general/topic/out.20formatting.20of.20prs/near/374997516), so that the next beta bump does not have to deal with a 200+ file diff and can remain concerned with other things like `cfg(bootstrap)` -- #113637 was a pain to land, for example, because of let-else.

ea3fb7bc2c coverage: Use a VecDeque for loop traversal worklists
The previous code was storing the worklist in a vector, and then selectively
adding items to the start or end of the vector. That's a perfect use-case for a
double-ended queue.

This change also reveals that the existing code was a bit confused about which
end of the worklist is the front or back. For now, items are always removed
from the front of the queue (instead of the back), and code that adds items to
the queue has been flipped, to preserve the existing behaviour.

The SSA analysis on MIR only considered `Assign` statements as defining a SSA local.
This PR adds assignments as part of a `Call` or `Yield` terminator in that category.

This mainly allows to perform CopyProp on a call return place.

The only subtlety is in the dominance property: the assignment is only complete at the beginning of the target block.

coverage: Allow each coverage statement to have multiple code regions

The original implementation of coverage instrumentation was built around the assumption that a coverage counter/expression would be associated with *up to one* code region. When it was discovered that *multiple* regions would sometimes need to share a counter, a workaround was found: for the remaining regions, the instrumentor would create a fresh expression that adds zero  to the existing counter/expression.

That got the job done, but resulted in some awkward code, and produces unnecessarily complicated coverage maps in the final binary.

This PR removes that tension by changing `StatementKind::Coverage`'s code region field from `Option<CodeRegion>` to `Vec<CodeRegion>`.

The changes on the codegen side are fairly straightforward. As long as each `CoverageKind::Counter` only injects one `llvm.instrprof.increment`, the rest of coverage codegen is happy to handle multiple regions mapped to the same counter/expression, with only minor option-to-vec adjustments.

On the instrumentor/mir-transform side, we can get rid of the code that creates extra (x + 0) expressions. Instead we gather all of the code regions associated with a single BCB, and inject them all into one coverage statement.

There are several patches here but they can be divided in to three phases:
- Preparatory work
- Actually switching over to multiple regions per coverage statement
- Cleaning up

So viewing the patches individually may be easier.

Implement a global value numbering MIR optimization

The aim of this pass is to avoid repeated computations by reusing past assignments. It is based on an analysis of SSA locals, in order to perform a restricted form of common subexpression elimination.

By opportunity, this pass allows for some simplifications by combining assignments. For instance, this pass could be able to see through projections of aggregates to directly reuse the aggregate field (not in this PR).

We handle references by assigning a different "provenance" index to each `Ref`/`AddressOf` rvalue. This ensure that we do not spuriously merge borrows that should not be merged. Meanwhile, we consider all the derefs of an immutable reference to a freeze type to give the same value:

_a = *_b // _b is &Freeze
_c = *_b // replaced by _c = _a
```

Also, be more consistent with the `to/eval_bits` methods... we had some that take a type and some that take a size, and then sometimes the one that takes a type is called `bits_for_ty`.

Turns out that `ty::Const`/`mir::ConstKind` carry their type with them, so we don't need to even pass the type to those `eval_bits` functions at all.

However this is not properly consistent yet: in `ty` we have most of the methods on `ty::Const`, but in `mir` we have them on `mir::ConstKind`. And indeed those two types are the ones that correspond to each other. So `mir::ConstantKind` should actually be renamed to `mir::Const`. But what to do with `mir::Constant`? It carries around a span, that's really more like a constant operand that appears as a MIR operand... it's more suited for `syntax.rs` than `consts.rs`, but the bigger question is, which name should it get if we want to align the `mir` and `ty` types? `ConstOperand`? `ConstOp`? `Literal`? It's not a literal but it has a field called `literal` so it would at least be consistently wrong-ish...

coverage: Simplify the `coverageinfo` query

The `coverageinfo` query walks through a `mir::Body`'s statements to find the total number of coverage counter IDs and coverage expression IDs that have been used, as this information is needed by coverage codegen.

This PR makes 3 nice simplifications to that query:
- Extract a common iterator over coverage statements, shared by both coverage-related queries
- Simplify the query's visitor from two passes to just one pass
- Explicitly track the highest seen IDs in the visitor, and only convert to a count right at the end

I also updated some related comments. Some had been invalidated by these changes, while others had already been invalidated by previous coverage changes.

Represent MIR composite debuginfo as projections instead of aggregates

Composite debuginfo for MIR is currently represented as

debug name => Type { projection1 => place1, projection2 => place2 };
```
ie. a single `VarDebugInfo` object with that name, and its value a `VarDebugInfoContents::Composite`.

This PR proposes to reverse the representation to be
```
debug name.projection1 => place1;
debug name.projection2 => place2;
```
ie. multiple `VarDebugInfo` objects with each their projection.

This simplifies the handling of composite debuginfo by the compiler by avoiding weird nesting.

coverage: Give the instrumentor its own counter type, separate from MIR

Within the MIR representation of coverage data, `CoverageKind` is an important part of `StatementKind::Coverage`, but the `InstrumentCoverage` pass also uses it heavily as an internal data structure. This means that any change to `CoverageKind` also needs to update all of the internal parts of `InstrumentCoverage` that manipulate it directly, making the MIR representation difficult to modify.

This change fixes that by giving the instrumentor its own `BcbCounter` type for internal use, which is then converted to a `CoverageKind` when injecting coverage information into MIR.

The main change is mostly mechanical, because the initial `BcbCounter` is drop-in compatible with `CoverageKind`, minus the unnecessary `CoverageKind::Unreachable` variant.

I've then removed the `function_source_hash` field from `BcbCounter::Counter`, as a small example of how the two types can now usefully differ from each other. Every counter in a MIR-level function should have the same source hash, so we can supply the hash during the conversion to `CoverageKind::Counter` instead.

*Background:* BCB stands for “basic coverage block”, which is a node in the simplified control-flow graph used by coverage instrumentation. The instrumentor pass uses the function's actual MIR control-flow graph to build a simplified BCB graph, then assigns coverage counters and counter expressions to various nodes/edges in that simplified graph, and then finally injects corresponding coverage information into the underlying MIR.

* Generator state transform introduces a `assert` which may unwind, and its drop elaboration also introduces many new `UnwindAction`s, so in this case run the AbortUnwindingCalls after the transformation.

I believe this PR should also fix Rust-for-Linux/linux#1016, cc `@ojeda`

This shows one small benefit of separating `BcbCounter` from `CoverageKind`.
The function source hash will be the same for all counters within a function,
so instead of passing it through `CoverageCounters` and storing it in every
counter, we can just supply it during the final conversion to `CoverageKind`.

5ca30c4646 Store BCB counters externally, not directly in the BCB graph
Storing coverage counter information in `CoverageCounters` has a few advantages
over storing it directly inside BCB graph nodes:

- The graph doesn't need to be mutable when making the counters, making it
easier to see that the graph itself is not modified during this step.

- All of the counter data is clearly visible in one place.

- It becomes possible to use a representation that doesn't correspond 1:1 to
graph nodes, e.g. storing all the edge counters in a single hashmap instead of
several.

This outcome is superior to hand-coded interrupt routines which, lacking visibility into any non-assembly body of the interrupt handler, have to be very conservative and save the [entire CPU state to the stack frame][full-frame-save]. By instead asking LLVM to only save the registers that it uses, we defer the decision to the tool with the best context: it can more accurately account for the cost of spills if it knows that every additional register used is already at the cost of an implicit spill.

At the LLVM level, this is apparently [implemented by] marking every register as "[callee-save]," matching the semantics of an interrupt handler nicely (it has to leave the CPU state just as it found it after its `{m|s}ret`).

This approach is not suitable for every interrupt handler, as it makes no attempt to e.g. save the state in a user-accessible stack frame. For a full discussion of those challenges and tradeoffs, please refer to [the interrupt calling conventions RFC][rfc].

Inside rustc, this implementation differs from prior art because LLVM does not expose the "all-saved" function flavor as a calling convention directly, instead preferring to use an attribute that allows for differentiating between "machine-mode" and "superivsor-mode" interrupts.

Finally, some effort has been made to guide those who may not yet be aware of the differences between machine-mode and supervisor-mode interrupts as to why no `riscv-interrupt` calling convention is exposed through rustc, and similarly for why `riscv-interrupt-u` makes no appearance (as it would complicate future LLVM upgrades).

This outcome is superior to hand-coded interrupt routines which, lacking
visibility into any non-assembly body of the interrupt handler, have to
be very conservative and save the [entire CPU state to the stack
frame][full-frame-save]. By instead asking LLVM to only save the
registers that it uses, we defer the decision to the tool with the best
context: it can more accurately account for the cost of spills if it
knows that every additional register used is already at the cost of an
implicit spill.

At the LLVM level, this is apparently [implemented by] marking every
register as "[callee-save]," matching the semantics of an interrupt
handler nicely (it has to leave the CPU state just as it found it after
its `{m|s}ret`).

This approach is not suitable for every interrupt handler, as it makes
no attempt to e.g. save the state in a user-accessible stack frame. For
a full discussion of those challenges and tradeoffs, please refer to
[the interrupt calling conventions RFC][rfc].

Inside rustc, this implementation differs from prior art because LLVM
does not expose the "all-saved" function flavor as a calling convention
directly, instead preferring to use an attribute that allows for
differentiating between "machine-mode" and "superivsor-mode" interrupts.

Finally, some effort has been made to guide those who may not yet be
aware of the differences between machine-mode and supervisor-mode
interrupts as to why no `riscv-interrupt` calling convention is exposed
through rustc, and similarly for why `riscv-interrupt-u` makes no
appearance (as it would complicate future LLVM upgrades).

After this PR, you cannot do that anymore, and need to instead either rely on inference of the `idx` argument type or specify it as `simd_shuffle::<_, [u32; 16], _>`.

3920e07f0b Make coverage counter IDs count up from 0, not 1
Operand types are now tracked explicitly, so there is no need to reserve ID 0
for the special always-zero counter.

As part of the renumbering, this change fixes an off-by-one error in the way
counters were counted by the `coverageinfo` query. As a result, functions
should now have exactly the number of counters they actually need, instead of
always having an extra counter that is never used.

1a014d42f4 Replace ExpressionOperandId with enum Operand
Because the three kinds of operand are now distinguished explicitly, we no
longer need fiddly code to disambiguate counter IDs and expression IDs based on
the total number of counters/expressions in a function.

This does increase the size of operands from 4 bytes to 8 bytes, but that
shouldn't be a big deal since they are mostly stored inside boxed structures,
and the current coverage code is not particularly size-optimized anyway.

I don't have a minimal test, but I this seems to remove the ICE locally.

This whole pre-inlining validation mirrors the "real" MIR validation pass to verify that inlined MIR will still pass validation.
The debuginfo loop is added because MIR validation check projections in debuginfo.
Likewise, MIR validation only checks `is_subtype`, so there is no reason for a stronger check.

The types were not being substituted in `check_equal`, so we were not bailing out of inlining if the substituted MIR callee body would not pass validation.

Rewrite `UnDerefer`

Currently, `UnDerefer` is used by drop elaboration to undo the effects of the `Derefer` pass. However, it just recreates the original places with derefs in the middle of the projection. Because `ProjectionElem::Deref` is intended to be removed completely in the future, this will not work forever.

This PR introduces a `deref_chain` method that returns the places behind `DerefTemp` locals in a place and rewrites the move path code to use this. In the process, `UnDerefer` was merged into `MovePathLookup`. Now that move paths use the same places as in the MIR, the other uses of `UnDerefer` no longer require it.

the same issue was caused in multiple places:
- mir opts: both copy and destination propagation
- codegen: assigning operands to locals (which also propagates values)

I changed codegen to always update the type in the operands used for locals which should guard against any new occurrences of this bug going forward. I don't know how to make mir optimizations more resilient here. Hopefully the added tests will be enough to detect any trivially wrong optimizations going forward.

Add a fully fledged `Clause` type, rename old `Clause` to `ClauseKind`

Does two basic things before I put up a more delicate set of PRs (along the lines of #112714, but hopefully much cleaner) that migrate existing usages of `ty::Predicate` to `ty::Clause` (`predicates_of`/`item_bounds`/`ParamEnv::caller_bounds`).

1. Rename `Clause` to `ClauseKind`, so it's parallel with `PredicateKind`.
2. Add a new `Clause` type which is parallel to `Predicate`.
    * This type exposes `Clause::kind(self) -> Binder<'tcx, ClauseKind<'tcx>>` which is parallel to `Predicate::kind` 😸

The new `Clause` type essentially acts as a newtype wrapper around `Predicate` that asserts that it is specifically a `PredicateKind::Clause`. Turns out from experimentation[^1] that this is not negative performance-wise, which is wonderful, since this a much simpler design than something that requires encoding the discriminant into the alignment bits of a predicate kind, or something else like that...

Switch the BB CFG cache from postorder to RPO

The `BasicBlocks` CFG cache is interesting:
- it stores a postorder, but `traversal::postorder` doesn't use it
- `traversal::reverse_postorder` does traverse the postorder cache backwards
- we do more RPO traversals than postorder traversals (around 20x on the perf.rlo benchmarks IIRC) but it's not cached
- a couple places here and there were manually reversing the non-cached postorder traversal

This PR switches the order of the cache, and makes a bit more use of it. This is a tiny win locally, but it's also for consistency and aesthetics.

Prevent `.eh_frame` from being emitted for `-C panic=abort`

Since `CheckAlignment` pass is after the `AbortUnwindingCalls` pass, the `UnwindAction::Terminate` inserted in it has no chance to be converted to `UnwindAction::Unreachable` anymore, causing us to emit landing pads that are not necessary. Although these landing pads can themselves be eliminated by LLVM, `.eh_frame` sections are still generated. This causes trouble for Rust-for-Linux project recently.

This PR changes it to generate `UnwindAction::Terminate` when we opt for `-Cpanic=unwind`, and `UnwindAction::Unreachable` for `-Cpanic=abort`.

Binary output (those of type `obj`, `llvm-bc`, `link` and `metadata`) being written this way will result in an error unless stdout is not a tty. Multiple output types going to stdout will trigger an error too, as they will all be mixded together.

This implements https://github.com/rust-lang/compiler-team/issues/431

The idea behind the changes is to introduce an `OutFileName` enum that represents the output - be it a real path or stdout - and to use this enum along the code paths that handle different output types.

Take MIR dataflow analyses by mutable reference

The main motivation here is any analysis requiring dynamically sized scratch memory to work. One concrete example would be pointer target tracking, where tracking the results of a dereference can result in multiple possible targets. This leads to processing multi-level dereferences requiring the ability to handle a changing number of potential targets per step. A (simplified) function for this would be `fn apply_deref(potential_targets: &mut Vec<Target>)` which would use the scratch space contained in the analysis to send arguments and receive the results.

The alternative to this would be to wrap everything in a `RefCell`, which is what `MaybeRequiresStorage` currently does. This comes with a small perf cost and loses the compiler's guarantee that we don't try to take multiple borrows at the same time.

For the implementation:
* `AnalysisResults` is an unfortunate requirement to avoid an unconstrained type parameter error.
* `CloneAnalysis` could just be `Clone` instead, but that would result in more work than is required to have multiple cursors over the same result set.
* `ResultsVisitor` now takes the results type on in each function as there's no other way to have access to the analysis without cloning it. This could use an associated type rather than a type parameter, but the current approach makes it easier to not care about the type when it's not necessary.
* `MaybeRequiresStorage` now no longer uses a `RefCell`, but the graphviz formatter now does. It could be removed, but that would require even more changes and doesn't really seem necessary.

Lower `unchecked_div`/`_rem` to MIR's `BinOp::Div`/`Rem`

As described in <https://doc.rust-lang.org/nightly/nightly-rustc/rustc_middle/mir/enum.BinOp.html#variant.Div>, the ordinary `BinOp`s for these are already UB for division by zero ([or overflow](https://llvm.org/docs/LangRef.html#sdiv-instruction), [demo](https://rust.godbolt.org/z/71e7P7Exh)), as MIR building is responsible for inserting code to panic for those cases regardless of whether the overflow checks are enabled.

So we can lower these in the same arm that lowers `wrapping_add` to MIR `BinOp::Add` and such, as all these cases turn into ordinary `Rvalue::BinaryOp`s.

Enable ScalarReplacementOfAggregates in optimized builds

Like MatchBranchSimplification, this pass is known to produce significant runtime improvements in Cranelift artifacts, and I believe based on the perf runs here that the primary effect of this pass is to empower MatchBranchSimplification. ScalarReplacementOfAggregates on its own has little effect on anything, but when this was rebased up to include https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/112001 we started seeing significant and majority-positive results.

Based on the fact that we see most of the regressions in debug builds (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/112002#issuecomment-1566270144) and some rather significant ones in cycles and wall time, I'm only enabling this in optimized builds at the moment.

Only rewrite valtree-constants to patterns and keep other constants opaque

Now that we can reliably fall back to comparing constants with `PartialEq::eq` to the match scrutinee, we can

1. eagerly try to convert constants to valtrees
2. then deeply convert the valtree to a pattern
3. if the to-valtree conversion failed, create an "opaque constant" pattern.

This PR specifically avoids any behavioral changes or major cleanups. What we can now do as follow ups is

* move the two remaining call sites to `destructure_mir_constant` off that query
* make valtree to pattern conversion infallible
    * this needs to be done after careful analysis of the effects. There may be user visible changes from that.

So this add two passes that are off by default for every mir level, but can be enabled (`-Zmir-enable-passes=+ReorderBasicBlocks,+ReorderLocals`) for humans.

Don't check for misaligned raw pointer derefs inside Rvalue::AddressOf

rustc 1.70 (stable next week) added a Mir pass to add pointer alignment checks in debug mode. Adding these checks caused some crates to break, but that was expected, since they contain broken code (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/111487) for tracking that.

However, the checks added are slightly more aggressive than they should have been. Specifically, they also check the place in an `addr_of!` expression. Whether lack of alignment there is or isn't UB is unclear. This PR modifies the pass to not affect those cases.

I spot checked the crater regressions and the ones I saw were not the case that this PR is modifying. It still seems good to not land anything overaggressive though

This pass is one of the small number of benefits from `-Zmir-opt-level=3` that has motivated rustc_codegen_cranelift to use it:

19ed0aade6/compiler/rustc_codegen_cranelift/build_system/build_sysroot.rs (L244-L246)

Cranelift's motivation for this is _runtime_ performance improvements in debug builds. Lifting this pass all the way to `-Zmir-opt-level=1` seems to come without significant perf overhead, so that's what I'm suggesting here.

Preprocess and cache dominator tree

Preprocessing dominators has a very strong effect for https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/111344.
That pass checks that assignments dominate their uses repeatedly. Using the unprocessed dominator tree caused a quadratic runtime (number of bbs x depth of the dominator tree).

This PR also caches the dominator tree and the pre-processed dominators in the MIR cfg cache.

Partially reverts #109612, as after #109993 these aren't actually equivalent any more, and I'm no longer confident this was ever an improvement in the first place.

Having this "simplification" meant that similar-looking code actually did somewhat different things.  For example,

Don't expect normalization to succeed in elaborate_drops

Fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/110682

This was exposed through the changes in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/109247, which causes more things to be inlined. Inlining can happen before monomorphization, so we can't expect normalization to succeed. In the elaborate_drops analysis we currently have [this call](033aa092ab/compiler/rustc_mir_dataflow/src/elaborate_drops.rs (L278)) to `normalize_erasing_regions`, which ICEs when normalization fails. The types are used to infer [whether the type needs a drop](033aa092ab/compiler/rustc_mir_dataflow/src/elaborate_drops.rs (L374)), where `needs_drop` itself [uses `try_normalize_erasing_regions`](033aa092ab/compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/util.rs (L1121)).

~[`instance_mir`](https://doc.rust-lang.org/stable/nightly-rustc/rustc_middle/ty/context/struct.TyCtxt.html#method.instance_mir) isn't explicit about whether it expects the instances corresponding to the `InstanceDef`s to be monomorphized (though I think in all other contexts the function is used post-monomorphization), so the use of `instance_mir` in inlining doesn't necessarily seem wrong to me.~

Optimize dataflow-const-prop place-tracking infra

Optimization opportunities found while investigating https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/110719

Computing places breadth-first ensures that we create short projections before deep projections, since the former are more likely to be propagated.

The most relevant is the pre-computation of flooded places. Callgrind showed `flood_*` methods and especially `preorder_preinvoke` were especially hot. This PR attempts to pre-compute the set of `ValueIndex` that `preorder_invoke` would visit.

Using this information, we make some `PlaceIndex` inaccessible when they contain no `ValueIndex`, allowing to skip computations for those places.

See #111005 and #110902 . The ICE can definitely be hit on stable, the miscompilation I'm not sure about. The pass makes some pretty sketchy assumptions though, and we should not have it on while that's the case.

I'm not going to work on actually fixing this, it's probably not excessively difficult though.

This was suggested by `@BoxyUwU` in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/107753#discussion_r1105828139. After changing `type_of` to return `EarlyBinder`, there were several places where the binder was immediately skipped to call `tcx.subst_and_normalize_erasing_regions`, only for the binder to be reconstructed inside of that method.

6b62f37402 Restrict From<S> for {D,Subd}iagnosticMessage.
Currently a `{D,Subd}iagnosticMessage` can be created from any type that
impls `Into<String>`. That includes `&str`, `String`, and `Cow<'static,
str>`, which are reasonable. It also includes `&String`, which is pretty
weird, and results in many places making unnecessary allocations for
patterns like this:
```
self.fatal(&format!(...))
```
This creates a string with `format!`, takes a reference, passes the
reference to `fatal`, which does an `into()`, which clones the
reference, doing a second allocation. Two allocations for a single
string, bleh.

This commit changes the `From` impls so that you can only create a
`{D,Subd}iagnosticMessage` from `&str`, `String`, or `Cow<'static,
str>`. This requires changing all the places that currently create one
from a `&String`. Most of these are of the `&format!(...)` form
described above; each one removes an unnecessary static `&`, plus an
allocation when executed. There are also a few places where the existing
use of `&String` was more reasonable; these now just use `clone()` at
the call site.

As well as making the code nicer and more efficient, this is a step
towards possibly using `Cow<'static, str>` in
`{D,Subd}iagnosticMessage::{Str,Eager}`. That would require changing
the `From<&'a str>` impls to `From<&'static str>`, which is doable, but
I'm not yet sure if it's worthwhile.

c678acd3a2 Leave promoteds untainted by errors when borrowck fails
Previously, when borrowck failed it would taint all promoteds within the MIR
body. An attempt to evaluated the promoteds would subsequently fail with
spurious "note: erroneous constant used". For example:

Remove the size of locals heuristic in MIR inlining

This heuristic doesn't necessarily correlate to complexity of the MIR Body. In particular, a lot of straight-line code in MIR tends to never reuse a local, even though any optimizer would effectively reuse the storage or just put everything in registers. So it doesn't even necessarily make sense that this would be a stack size heuristic.

So... what happens if we just delete the heuristic? The benchmark suite improves significantly. Less heuristics better?

These are just legacy leftovers from when rustc didn't have a query system. While there are more cleanups of this sort that can be done here, I want to land them in smaller steps.

This phased order of query invocations was already a lie, as any query that looks at types (e.g. the wf checks run before) can invoke e.g. const eval which invokes borrowck, which invokes typeck, ...

Evaluate place expression in `PlaceMention`

https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/102256 introduces a `PlaceMention(place)` MIR statement which keep trace of `let _ = place` statements from surface rust, but without semantics.

This PR proposes to change the behaviour of `let _ =` patterns with respect to the borrow-checker to verify that the bound place is live.

Specifically, consider this code:
```rust
let _ = {
    let a = 5;
    &a
};
```

This passes borrowck without error on stable. Meanwhile, replacing `_` by `_: _` or `_p` errors with "error[E0597]: `a` does not live long enough", [see playground](https://play.rust-lang.org/?version=stable&mode=debug&edition=2021&gist=c448d25a7c205dc95a0967fe96bccce8).

This PR *does not* change how `_` patterns behave with respect to initializedness: it remains ok to bind a moved-from place to `_`.

The relevant test is `tests/ui/borrowck/let_underscore_temporary.rs`. Crater check found no regression.

For consistency, this PR changes miri to evaluate the place found in `PlaceMention`, and report eventual dangling pointers found within it.

Add offset_of! macro (RFC 3308)

Implements https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/3308 (tracking issue #106655) by adding the built in macro `core::mem::offset_of`. Two of the future possibilities are also implemented:

* Nested field accesses (without array indexing)
* DST support (for `Sized` fields)

I wrote this a few months ago, before the RFC merged. Now that it's merged, I decided to rebase and finish it.

Deduplicate unreachable blocks, for real this time

In https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/106428 (in particular 41eda69516) we noticed that inlining `unreachable_unchecked` can produce duplicate unreachable blocks. So we improved two MIR optimizations: `SimplifyCfg` was given a simplify to deduplicate unreachable blocks, then `InstCombine` was given a combiner to deduplicate switch targets that point at the same block. The problem is that change doesn't actually work.

Our current pass order is
```
SimplifyCfg (does nothing relevant to this situation)
Inline (produces multiple unreachable blocks)
InstCombine (doesn't do anything here, oops)
SimplifyCfg (produces the duplicate SwitchTargets that InstCombine is looking for)
```

So in here, I have factored out the specific function from `InstCombine` and placed it inside the simplify that produces the case it is looking for. This should ensure that it runs in the scenario it was designed for.

Hey! 👋🏾 This is a first PR attempt to see if I could speed up some rustc internals.

Thought process:

in [compiler/src/rustc_mir_transform/simplify.rs](7908a1d654/compiler/rustc_mir_transform/src/simplify.rs (L39)) fires multiple times per MIR analysis. This means that a likely string allocation is happening in each of these runs, which may add up, as they are not being  lazily allocated or cached in between the different passes.

...yes, I know that adding a global static array is probably not the future-proof solution, but I wanted to lob this now as a proof of concept to see if it's worth shaving off a few cycles and then making more robust.

Encode hashes as bytes, not varint

In a few places, we store hashes as `u64` or `u128` and then apply `derive(Decodable, Encodable)` to the enclosing struct/enum. It is more efficient to encode hashes directly than try to apply some varint encoding. This PR adds two new types `Hash64` and `Hash128` which are produced by `StableHasher` and replace every use of storing a `u64` or `u128` that represents a hash.

Permit MIR inlining without #[inline]

I noticed that there are at least a handful of portable-simd functions that have no `#[inline]` but compile to an assign + return.

I locally benchmarked inlining thresholds between 0 and 50 in increments of 5, and 50 seems to be the best. Interesting. That didn't include check builds though, ~maybe perf will have something to say about that~.

Perf has little useful to say about this. We generally regress all the check builds, as best as I can tell, due to a number of small codegen changes in a particular hot function in the compiler. Probably this is because we've nudged the inlining outcomes all over, and uses of `#[inline(always)]`/`#[inline(never)]` might need to be adjusted.

This allows us to get rid of the `rustc_const_eval->rustc_borrowck`
dependency edge which was delaying the compilation of borrowck.

The added utils in `rustc_middle` are small and should not affect

We store argument indexes on VarDebugInfo. Unlike the previous method of relying on the variable index to know whether a variable is an argument, this survives MIR inlining.

We also no longer check if var.source_info.scope is the outermost scope. When a function gets inlined, the arguments to the inner function will no longer be in the outermost scope. What we care about though is whether they were in the outermost scope prior to inlining, which we know by whether we assigned an argument index.

Fixes #83217

I considered using `Option<NonZeroU16>` instead of `Option<u16>` to store the index. I didn't because `TypeFoldable` isn't implemented for `NonZeroU16` and because it looks like due to padding, it currently wouldn't make any difference. But I indexed from 1 anyway because (a) it'll make it easier if later it becomes worthwhile to use a `NonZeroU16` and because the arguments were previously indexed from 1, so it made for a smaller change.

This is my first PR on rust-lang/rust, so apologies if I've gotten anything not quite right.

fixes #109743

This hack didn't need to live in the mir interpreter. For const-prop-lint it is entirely correct to avoid doing any const prop if normalization fails at this stage. Most likely we couldn't const propagate anything anyway, and if revealing was needed (so opaque types were involved), we wouldn't want to be too smart and leak the hidden type anyway.

Partial stabilization of `once_cell`

This PR aims to stabilize a portion of the `once_cell` feature:

- `core::cell::OnceCell`
- `std::cell::OnceCell` (re-export of the above)
- `std::sync::OnceLock`

This will leave `LazyCell` and `LazyLock` unstabilized, which have been moved to the `lazy_cell` feature flag.

Support TLS access into dylibs on Windows

This allows access to `#[thread_local]`  in upstream dylibs on Windows by introducing a MIR shim to return the address of the thread local. Accesses that go into an upstream dylib will call the MIR shim to get the address of it.

`convert_tls_rvalues` is introduced in `rustc_codegen_ssa` which rewrites MIR TLS accesses to dummy calls which are replaced with calls to the MIR shims when the dummy calls are lowered to backend calls.

A new `dll_tls_export` target option enables this behavior with a `false` value which is set for Windows platforms.

This fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/84933.

843c5e361e Rename IndexVec::lastlast_index
As I've been trying to replace a `Vec` with an `IndexVec`, having `last` exist on both but returning very different types makes the transition a bit awkward -- the errors are later, where you get things like "there's no `ty` method on `mir::Field`" rather than a more localized error like "hey, there's no `last` on `IndexVec`".

So I propose renaming `last` to `last_index` to help distinguish `Vec::last`, which returns an element, and `IndexVec::last_index`, which returns an index.

(Similarly, `Iterator::last` also returns an element, not an index.)

Don't elaborate non-obligations into obligations

It's suspicious to elaborate a `PolyTraitRef` or `Predicate` into an `Obligation`, since the former does not have a param-env associated with it, but the latter does. This is a footgun that, while not being misused *currently* in the compiler, easily could be misused by someone less familiar with the elaborator's inner workings.

This PR just changes the API -- ideally, the elaborator wouldn't even have to deal with obligations if we're not elaborating obligations, but that would require a bit more abstraction than I could be bothered with today.

This heuristic prevents inlining of `hint::unreachable_unchecked`, which in turn makes `Option/Result::unwrap_unchecked` a bad inlining candidate. I looked through the changes to `core`, `alloc`, `std`, and `hashbrown` by hand and they all seem reasonable. Let's see how this looks in perf...

Based on rustc-perf it looks like this regresses ctfe-stress, and the cachegrind diff indicates that this regression is in `InterpCx::statement`. I don't know how to do any deeper analysis because that function is _enormous_ in the try toolchain, which has no debuginfo in it. And a local build produces significantly different codegen for that function, even with LTO.

0439d13176 Refactor: VariantIdx::from_u32(0) -> FIRST_VARIANT
Since structs are always `VariantIdx(0)`, there's a bunch of files where the only reason they had `VariantIdx` or `vec::Idx` imported at all was to get the first variant.

So this uses a constant for that, and adds some doc-comments to `VariantIdx` while I'm there, since it doesn't have any today.

Ensure `ptr::read` gets all the same LLVM `load` metadata that dereferencing does

I was looking into `array::IntoIter` optimization, and noticed that it wasn't annotating the loads with `noundef` for simple things like `array::IntoIter<i32, N>`.  Trying to narrow it down, it seems that was because `MaybeUninit::assume_init_read` isn't marking the load as initialized (<https://rust.godbolt.org/z/Mxd8TPTnv>), which is unfortunate since that's basically its reason to exist.

The root cause is that `ptr::read` is currently implemented via the *untyped* `copy_nonoverlapping`, and thus the `load` doesn't get any type-aware metadata: no `noundef`, no `!range`.  This PR solves that by lowering `ptr::read(p)` to `copy *p` in MIR, for which the backends already do the right thing.

Fortuitiously, this also improves the IR we give to LLVM for things like `mem::replace`, and fixes a couple of long-standing bugs where `ptr::read` on `Copy` types was worse than `*`ing them.

Remove `box_syntax`

This removes the feature `box_syntax`, which allows the use of `box <expr>` to create a Box, and finalises removing use of the feature from the compiler. `box_patterns` (allowing the use of `box <pat>` in a pattern) is unaffected.
It also removes `ast::ExprKind::Box` - the only way to create a 'box' expression now is with the rustc-internal `#[rustc_box]` attribute.
As a temporary measure to help users move away, `box <expr>` now parses the inner expression, and emits a `MachineApplicable` lint to replace it with `Box::new`

Strengthen state tracking in const-prop

Some/many of the changes are replicated between both the const-prop lint and the const-prop optimization.

Behaviour changes:
- const-prop opt does not give a span to propagated values. This was useless as that span's primary purpose is to diagnose evaluation failure in codegen.
- we remove the `OnlyPropagateInto` mode. It was only used for function arguments, which are better modeled by a write before entry.
- the tracking of assignments and discriminants make clearer that we do nothing in `NoPropagation` mode or on indirect places.

Ensure value is on the on-disk cache before returning from `ensure()`.

The current logic for `ensure()` a query just checks that the node is green in the dependency graph.
However, a lot of places use `ensure()` to prevent the query from being called later. This is the case before stealing a query result.

If the query is actually green but the value is not available in the on-disk cache, `ensure` would return, but a subsequent call to the full query would run the code, and attempt to read from a stolen value.

This PR conforms the query system to the usage by checking whether the queried value is loadable from disk before returning.

Sadly, I can't manage to craft a proper test...

Should fix all instances of "attempted to read from stolen value".

Do not implement HashStable for HashSet (MCP 533)

This PR removes all occurrences of `HashSet` in query results, replacing it either with `FxIndexSet` or with `UnordSet`, and then removes the `HashStable` implementation of `HashSet`. This is part of implementing [MCP 533](https://github.com/rust-lang/compiler-team/issues/533), that is, removing the `HashStable` implementations of all collection types with unstable iteration order.

The changes are mostly mechanical. The only place where additional sorting is happening is in Miri's override implementation of the `exported_symbols` query.

9570023ce1 Only compute the crate hash when necessary.
The crate hash is needed:
- if debug assertions are enabled, or
- if incr. comp. is enabled, or
- if metadata is being generated, or
- if `-C instrumentation-coverage` is enabled.

This commit avoids computing the crate hash when these conditions are
all false, such as when doing a release build of a binary crate.

It uses `Option` to store the hashes when needed, rather than
computing them on demand, because some of them are needed in multiple
places and computing them on demand would make compilation slower.

The commit also removes `Owner::hash_without_bodies`. There is no
benefit to pre-computing that one, it can just be done in the normal
fashion.

Desugaring of drop and replace at MIR build

This commit desugars the drop and replace deriving from an
assignment at MIR build, avoiding the construction of the
`DropAndReplace` terminator (which will be removed in a following PR).

In order to retain the same error messages for replaces a new
`DesugaringKind::Replace` variant is introduced.

The changes in the borrowck are also useful for future work in moving drop elaboration
before borrowck, as no `DropAndReplace` would be present there anymore.

Notes on test diffs:
*  `tests/ui/borrowck/issue-58776-borrowck-scans-children`: the assignment deriving from the desugaring kills the borrow.
*  `tests/ui/async-await/async-fn-size-uninit-locals.rs`, `tests/mir-opt/issue_41110.test.ElaborateDrops.after.mir`,  `tests/mir-opt/issue_41888.main.ElaborateDrops.after.mir`:  drop elaboration generates (or reads from) a useless drop flag due to an issue with the dataflow analysis. Will be fixed independently by https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/106430.

assignment at MIR build, avoiding the construction of the
DropAndReplace terminator (which will be removed in a followign PR)

In order to retain the same error messages for replaces a new

2200911616 Rename many interner functions.
(This is a large commit. The changes to
`compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/context.rs` are the most important ones.)

The current naming scheme is a mess, with a mix of `_intern_`, `intern_`
and `mk_` prefixes, with little consistency. In particular, in many
cases it's easy to use an iterator interner when a (preferable) slice
interner is available.

The guiding principles of the new naming system:
- No `_intern_` prefixes.
- The `intern_` prefix is for internal operations.
- The `mk_` prefix is for external operations.
- For cases where there is a slice interner and an iterator interner,
  the former is `mk_foo` and the latter is `mk_foo_from_iter`.

Also, `slice_interners!` and `direct_interners!` can now be `pub` or
non-`pub`, which helps enforce the internal/external operations
division.

It's not perfect, but I think it's a clear improvement.

The following lists show everything that was renamed.

23e3840014 Remove dead unwinds before drop elaboration
As a part of drop elaboration, we identify dead unwinds, i.e., unwind
edges on a drop terminators which are known to be unreachable, because
there is no need to drop anything.

Previously, the data flow framework was informed about the dead unwinds,
and it assumed those edges are absent from MIR. Unfortunately, the data
flow framework wasn't consistent in maintaining this assumption.

In particular, if a block was reachable only through a dead unwind edge,
its state was propagated to other blocks still. This became an issue in
the context of change removes DropAndReplace terminator, since it
introduces initialization into cleanup blocks.

To avoid this issue, remove unreachable unwind edges before the drop
elaboration, and elaborate only blocks that remain reachable.

Correctly handle aggregates in DataflowConstProp

The previous implementation from https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/107411 flooded target of an aggregate assignment with `Bottom`, corresponding to the `deinit` that the interpreter does.

As a consequence, when assigning `target = Enum::Variant#i(...)` all the `(target as Variant#j)` were at `Bottom` while they should have been `Top`.

This PR replaces that flooding with `Top`.

Aside, it corrects a second bug where the wrong place would be used to assign to enum variant fields, resulting to nothing happening.

bcf0ec0191 Replace mk_foo calls with infer_foo where possible.
There are several `mk_foo`/`intern_foo` pairs, where the former takes an
iterator and the latter takes a slice. (This naming convention is bad,
but that's a fix for another PR.)

This commit changes several `mk_foo` occurrences into `intern_foo`,
avoiding the need for some `.iter()`/`.into_iter()` calls. Affected
cases:
- mk_type_list
- mk_tup
- mk_substs
- mk_const_list

Switch to `EarlyBinder` for `type_of` query

Part of the work to finish #105779 and implement https://github.com/rust-lang/types-team/issues/78.

Several queries `X` have a `bound_X` variant that wraps the output in `EarlyBinder`. This adds `EarlyBinder` to the return type of the `type_of` query and removes `bound_type_of`.

Implement partial support for non-lifetime binders

This implements support for non-lifetime binders. It's pretty useless currently, but I wanted to put this up so the implementation can be discussed.

Specifically, this piggybacks off of the late-bound lifetime collection code in `rustc_hir_typeck::collect::lifetimes`. This seems like a necessary step given the fact we don't resolve late-bound regions until this point, and binders are sometimes merged.

Q: I'm not sure if I should go along this route, or try to modify the earlier nameres code to compute the right bound var indices for type and const binders eagerly... If so, I'll need to rename all these queries to something more appropriate (I've done this for `resolve_lifetime::Region` -> `resolve_lifetime::ResolvedArg`)

Handle discriminant in DataflowConstProp

This PR attempts to extend the DataflowConstProp pass to handle propagation of discriminants. We handle this by adding 2 new variants to `TrackElem`: `TrackElem::Variant` for enum variants and `TrackElem::Discriminant` for the enum discriminant pseudo-place.

The difficulty is that the enum discriminant and enum variants may alias each another. This is the issue of the `Option<NonZeroUsize>` test, which is the equivalent of https://github.com/rust-lang/unsafe-code-guidelines/issues/84 with a direct write.

To handle that, we generalize the flood process to flood all the potentially aliasing places. In particular:
- any write to `(PLACE as Variant)`, either direct or through a projection, floods `(PLACE as OtherVariant)` for all other variants and `discriminant(PLACE)`;
- `SetDiscriminant(PLACE)` floods `(PLACE as Variant)` for each variant.

This implies that flooding is not hierarchical any more, and that an assignment to a non-tracked place may need to flood a tracked place. This is handled by `for_each_aliasing_place` which generalizes `preorder_invoke`.

As we deaggregate enums by putting `SetDiscriminant` last, this allows to propagate the value of the discriminant.

This refactor will allow to make https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/107009 able to handle discriminants too.

Treat Drop as a rmw operation

Previously, a Drop terminator was considered a move in MIR. This commit changes the behavior to only treat Drop as a mutable access to the dropped place.

In order for this change to be correct, we need to guarantee that

1.  A dropped value won't be used again
   2.  Places that appear in a drop won't be used again before a
     subsequent initialization.

We can ensure this to be correct at MIR construction because Drop will only be emitted when a variable goes out of scope, thus having:
*   (1) as there is no way of reaching the old value. drop-elaboration
     will also remove any uninitialized drop.
 * (2) as the place can't be named following the end of the scope.

However, the initialization status, previously tracked by moves, should also be tied to the execution of a Drop, hence the additional logic in the dataflow analyses.

This PR widens the check to turn such moves into copies: a move out of a projection of a copy is equivalent to a copy of the original projection.

15f4eec7a9 Leave FIXME for wasm layout difference.
There is a distinction between running this on wasm and i686, even though they should be
identical. This technically is not _incorrect_, it's just an unexpected difference, which is
worth investigating, but not for correctness.

Remove both StorageLive and StorageDead in CopyProp.

https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/106908 removed StorageDead without the accompanying StorageLive. In loops, execution would see repeated StorageLive, without any StorageDead, which is UB.

So when removing storage statements, we have to remove both StorageLive and StorageDead.

~I also added a MIR validation pass for StorageLive. It may be a bit overzealous.~
