auto merge of #10696 : fhahn/rust/issue9543-remove-extern-mod-foo, r=pcwalton
...
This patch for #9543 throws an `obsolete syntax` error for `extern mod foo (name="bar")` .
I was wondering if [this](https://github.com/fhahn/rust/compare/mozilla:master...fhahn:issue9543-remove-extern-mod-foo?expand=1#diff-da9d34ca1d0f6beee2838cf02e07345cR4444 ) is the correct place to do this?
I think the wording of the error message could probably be improved as well.
If this approach is OK, I'm going to run the whole test suite tomorrow and update the old syntax to the new one.

add new enum ast::StrStyle as field to ast::lit_str
...
For the benefit of the pretty printer we want to keep track of how
string literals in the ast were originally represented in the source
code.
This commit changes parser functions so they don't extract strings from
the token stream without at least also returning what style of string
literal it was. This is stored in the resulting ast node for string
literals, obviously, for the package id in `extern mod = r"package id"`
view items, for the inline asm in `asm!()` invocations.
For `asm!()`'s other arguments or for `extern "Rust" fn()` items, I just
the style of string, because it seemed disproportionally cumbersome to
thread that information through the string processing that happens with
those string literals, given the limited advantage raw string literals
would provide in these positions.
The other syntax extensions don't seem to store passed string literals
in the ast, so they also discard the style of strings they parse.

This does a number of things, but especially dramatically reduce the
number of allocations performed for operations involving attributes/
meta items:
- Converts ast::meta_item & ast::attribute and other associated enums
to CamelCase.
- Converts several standalone functions in syntax::attr into methods,
defined on two traits AttrMetaMethods & AttributeMethods. The former
is common to both MetaItem and Attribute since the latter is a thin
wrapper around the former.
- Deletes functions that are unnecessary due to iterators.
- Converts other standalone functions to use iterators and the generic
AttrMetaMethods rather than allocating a lot of new vectors (e.g. the
old code would have to allocate a new vector to use functions that
operated on &[meta_item] on &[attribute].)
- Moves the core algorithm of the #[cfg] matching to syntax::attr,
similar to find_inline_attr and find_linkage_metas.
This doesn't have much of an effect on the speed of #[cfg] stripping,
despite hugely reducing the number of allocations performed; presumably
most of the time is spent in the ast folder rather than doing attribute
checks.
Also fixes the Eq instance of MetaItem_ to correctly ignore spans, so
that `rustc --cfg 'foo(bar)'` now works.

Add AbiSet and integrate it into the AST.

I believe this patch incorporates all expected syntax changes from extern
function reform (#3678 ). You can now write things like:
extern "<abi>" fn foo(s: S) -> T { ... }
extern "<abi>" mod { ... }
extern "<abi>" fn(S) -> T
The ABI for foreign functions is taken from this syntax (rather than from an
annotation). We support the full ABI specification I described on the mailing
list. The correct ABI is chosen based on the target architecture.
Calls by pointer to C functions are not yet supported, and the Rust type of
crust fns is still *u8.

Hey folks,
This patch series does some work on the json decoder, specifically with auto decoding of enums. Previously, we would take this code:
```
enum A {
B,
C(~str, uint)
}
```
and would encode a value of this enum to either `["B", []]` or `["C", ["D", 123]]`. I've changed this to `"B"` or `["C", "D", 123]`. This matches the style of the O'Caml json library [json-wheel](http://mjambon.com/json-wheel.html ). I've added tests to make sure all this work.
In order to make this change, I added passing a `&[&str]` vec to `Decode::emit_enum_variant` so the json decoder can convert the name of a variant into it's position. I also changed the impl of `Encodable` for `Option<T>` to have the right upper casing.
I also did some work on the parser, which allows for `fn foo<T: ::cmp::Eq>() { ... }` statements (#5572 ), fixed the pretty printer properly expanding `debug!("...")` expressions, and removed `ast::expr_vstore_fixed`, which doesn't appear to be used anymore.

Fix pretty-printer test failure by carrying the bound lifetime names through

the types. Initially I thought it would be necessary to thread this data
through not only the AST but the types themselves, but then I remembered that
the pretty printer only cares about the AST. Regardless, I have elected to
leave the changes to the types intact since they will eventually be needed. I
left a few FIXMEs where it didn't seem worth finishing up since the code wasn't
crucial yet.

Ideally I would have run a profiler to figure out which copies are the most critical to remove, but in reality there was a liberal amount of `git grep`s along with some spot checking and removing the easy ones.

librustc: Make the compiler ignore purity.
...
For bootstrapping purposes, this commit does not remove all uses of
the keyword "pure" -- doing so would cause the compiler to no longer
bootstrap due to some syntax extensions ("deriving" in particular).
Instead, it makes the compiler ignore "pure". Post-snapshot, we can
remove "pure" from the language.
There are quite a few (~100) borrow check errors that were essentially

These changes make const translation use adjustments (autodereference, autoreference, bare-fn-to-closure), like normal code does, replacing some ad-hoc logic that wasn't always right.
As a convenient side-effect, explicit dereference (both of pointers and of newtypes) is also supported in const expressions.
There is also a “bonus fix” for a bug in the pretty-printer exposed by one of the added tests.

The fix is straight-forward, but there are several changes
while fixing the issue.
1) disallow `mut` keyword when making a new struct
In code base, there are following code,
```rust
struct Foo { mut a: int };
let a = Foo { mut a: 1 };
```
This is because of structural record, which is
deprecated corrently (see issue #3089 ) In structural
record, `mut` keyword should be allowd to control
mutability. But without structural record, we don't
need to allow `mut` keyword while constructing struct.
2) disallow structural records in parser level
This is related to 1). With structural records, there
is an ambiguity between empty block and empty struct
To solve the problem, I change parser to stop parsing
structural records. I think this is not a problem,
because structural records are not compiled already.
Misc. issues
There is an ambiguity between empty struct vs. empty match stmt.
with following code,
```rust
match x{} {}
```
Two interpretation is possible, which is listed blow
```rust
match (x{}) {} // matching with newly-constructed empty struct
(match x{}) {} // matching with empty enum(or struct) x
// and then empty block
```
It seems that there is no such code in rust code base, but
there is one test which uses empty match statement:
https://github.com/mozilla/rust/blob/incoming/src/test/run-pass/issue-3037.rs
All other cases could be distinguished with look-ahead,
but this can't be. One possible solution is wrapping with
parentheses when matching with an uninhabited type.
```rust
enum what { }
fn match_with_empty(x: what) -> ~str {
match (x) { //use parentheses to remove the ambiguity
}
}
```

r? @graydon - This is for greater uniformity (for example, macros that generate

way to construct a 1-tuple term.
@graydon , as far as your comment on #4898 - it did turn out to be solvable inside the macro (since @luqmana already fixed it using structs instead), but I still think it's a good idea to allow 1-tuples, for uniformity. I don't think anyone is likely to trip over it, and I'm not too worried that it changes the amount of ambiguity.

- Proper fix for def-ids in params
Def ids in params:
Move captures into a map instead of recomputing.
This is a workaround for a larger bug having to do with the def-ids associated
with ty_params, which are not always properly preserved when inlining. I am
not sure of my preferred fix for the larger bug yet. This current fix removes
the only code in trans that I know of which relies on ty_param def-ids, but
feels fragile.

- Make `extern fn()` assignable to any closure type, rather than

- Remove unused int_ty_set and float_ty_set
- Refactor variable unification and make it more DRY
- Do fn sub/lub/glb on the level of fn_sig
- Rename infer::to_str::ToStr to infer::to_str::InferStr
- Capitalize names of various types
- Correct hashing of FnMeta
- Convert various records-of-fns into structs-of-fns. This is both
eliminating use of deprecated features and more forwards compatible
with fn reform.

Simplify the AST representation of ty param bounds
...
Change ast::ty_param_bound so that all ty param bounds are represented
as traits, with no special cases for Copy/Send/Owned/Const.
typeck::collect generates the special cases.
A consequence of this is that code using the #[no_core] attribute
can't use the Copy kind/trait. Probably not a big deal?
As a side effect, any user-defined traits that happen to be called
Copy, etc. in the same module override the built-in Copy trait.

Change 'native' and 'crust' to 'extern'.
...
This comes with a terminology change. All linkage-symbols are 'extern'
now, including rust syms in other crates. Some extern ABIs are
merely "foreign". The term "native" is retired, not clear/useful.
What was "crust" is now "extern" applied to a _definition_. This
is a bit of an overloading, but should be unambiguous: it means
that the definition should be made available to some non-rust ABI.

In this commit:
* Change the lit_int_unsuffixed AST node to not carry a type, since
it doesn't need one
* Don't print "(unsuffixed)" when pretty-printing unsuffixed integer
literals
* Just print "I" instead of "(integral)" for integral type variables
* Set up trans to use the information that will be gathered during
typeck to construct the appropriate constants for unsuffixed int
literals
* Add logic for handling int_ty_sets in typeck::infer
* Clean up unnecessary code in typeck::infer
* Add missing mk_ functions to middle::ty
* Add ty_var_integral to a few of the type utility functions it was
