f0c93117ed Use root obligation on E0277 for some cases
When encountering trait bound errors that satisfy some heuristics that
tell us that the relevant trait for the user comes from the root
obligation and not the current obligation, we use the root predicate for
the main message.

This allows to talk about "X doesn't implement Pattern<'_>" over the
most specific case that just happened to fail, like "char doesn't
implement Fn(&mut char)" in
`tests/ui/traits/suggest-dereferences/root-obligation.rs`

The heuristics are:

 - the type of the leaf predicate is (roughly) the same as the type
   from the root predicate, as a proxy for "we care about the root"
 - the leaf trait and the root trait are different, so as to avoid
   talking about `&mut T: Trait` and instead remain talking about
   `T: Trait` instead
 - the root trait is not `Unsize`, as to avoid talking about it in
   `tests/ui/coercion/coerce-issue-49593-box-never.rs`.

```
remove platform-intrinsics ABI; make SIMD intrinsics be regular intrinsics
`@Amanieu` `@workingjubilee` I don't think there is any reason these need to be "special"? The [original RFC](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/1199-simd-infrastructure.html) indicated eventually making them stable, but I think that is no longer the plan, so seems to me like we can clean this up a bit.
Blocked on https://github.com/rust-lang/stdarch/pull/1538, https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/121542.
Implement intrinsics with fallback bodies
fixes #93145 (though we can port many more intrinsics)
cc #63585
The way this works is that the backend logic for generating custom code for intrinsics has been made fallible. The only failure path is "this intrinsic is unknown". The `Instance` (that was `InstanceDef::Intrinsic`) then gets converted to `InstanceDef::Item`, which represents the fallback body. A regular function call to that body is then codegenned. This is currently implemented for
* codegen_ssa (so llvm and gcc)
* codegen_cranelift
other backends will need to adjust, but they can just keep doing what they were doing if they prefer (though adding new intrinsics to the compiler will then require them to implement them, instead of getting the fallback body).
cc `@scottmcm` `@WaffleLapkin`
Rollup merge of #119562 - LegionMammal978:rename-pin-pointer, r=Amanieu,dtolnay
Rename `pointer` field on `Pin`
A few days ago, I was helping another user create a self-referential type using `PhantomPinned`. However, I noticed an odd behavior when I tried to access one of the type's fields via `Pin`'s `Deref` impl:
```rust
use std::{marker::PhantomPinned, ptr};

struct Pinned {
    data: i32,
    pointer: *const i32,
    _pin: PhantomPinned,
}

fn main() {
    let mut b = Box::pin(Pinned {
        data: 42,
        pointer: ptr::null(),
        _pin: PhantomPinned,
    });
    {
        let pinned = unsafe { b.as_mut().get_unchecked_mut() };
        pinned.pointer = &pinned.data;
    }
    println!("{}", unsafe { *b.pointer });
}
```
```rust
error[E0658]: use of unstable library feature 'unsafe_pin_internals'
  --> <source>:19:30
   |
19 |     println!("{}", unsafe { *b.pointer });
   |                              ^^^^^^^^^

error[E0277]: `Pinned` doesn't implement `std::fmt::Display`
  --> <source>:19:20
   |
19 |     println!("{}", unsafe { *b.pointer });
   | ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ `Pinned` cannot be formatted with the default formatter
   |
   = help: the trait `std::fmt::Display` is not implemented for `Pinned`
   = note: in format strings you may be able to use `{:?}` (or {:#?} for pretty-print) instead
   = note: this error originates in the macro `$crate::format_args_nl` which comes from the expansion of the macro `println` (in Nightly builds, run with -Z macro-backtrace for more info)
```
Since the user named their field `pointer`, it conflicts with the `pointer` field on `Pin`, which is public but unstable since Rust 1.60.0 with #93176. On versions from 1.33.0 to 1.59.0, where the field on `Pin` is private, this program compiles and prints `42` as expected.
To avoid this confusing behavior, this PR renames `pointer` to `__pointer`, so that it's less likely to conflict with a `pointer` field on the underlying type, as accessed through the `Deref` impl. This is technically a breaking change for anyone who names their field `__pointer` on the inner type; if this is undesirable, it could be renamed to something more longwinded. It's also a nightly breaking change for any external users of `unsafe_pin_internals`.
Actually parse async gen blocks correctly
1. I got the control flow in `parse_expr_bottom` messed up, and obviously forgot a test for `async gen`, so we weren't actually ever parsing it correctly.
2. I forgot to gate the span for `async gen {}`, so even if we did parse it, we wouldn't have correctly denied it in `cfg(FALSE)`.
Implementation of https://github.com/rust-lang/compiler-team/issues/653.
Not an implementation of https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/2794.
It adds the `--env` compiler flag option which allows to set environment values used by `env!` and `option_env!`.
Important to note: When trying to retrieve an environment variable value, it will first look into the ones defined with `--env`, and if there isn't one, then only it will look into the environment variables. So if you use `--env PATH=a`, then `env!("PATH")` will return `"a"` and not the actual `PATH` value.
As mentioned in the title, `tracked_env` support is not added here. I'll do it in a follow-up PR.
never_patterns: Parse match arms with no body
Never patterns are meant to signal unreachable cases, and thus don't take bodies:
```rust
let ptr: *const Option<!> = ...;
match *ptr {
    None => { foo(); }
    Some(!),
}
```
This PR makes rustc accept the above, and enforces that an arm has a body xor is a never pattern. This affects parsing of match arms even with the feature off, so this is delicate. (Plus this is my first non-trivial change to the parser).
~~The last commit is optional; it introduces a bit of churn to allow the new suggestions to be machine-applicable. There may be a better solution? I'm not sure.~~ EDIT: I removed that commit
Resolve associated item bindings by namespace
This is the 3rd commit split off from #118360 with tests reblessed (they no longer contain duplicated diags which were caused by 4c0addc80a) & slightly adapted (removed supertraits from a UI test, cc #118040).
> * Resolve all assoc item bindings (type, const, fn (feature `return_type_notation`)) by namespace instead of trying to resolve a type first (in the non-RTN case) and falling back to consts afterwards. This is consistent with RTN. E.g., for `Tr<K = {…}>` we now always try to look up assoc consts (this extends to supertrait bounds). This gets rid of assoc tys shadowing assoc consts in assoc item bindings which is undesirable & inconsistent (types and consts live in different namespaces after all)
> * Consolidate the resolution of assoc {ty, const} bindings and RTN (dedup, better diags for RTN)
> * Fix assoc consts being labeled as assoc *types* in several diagnostics
> * Make a bunch of diagnostics translatable
Fixes #112560 (error → pass).
**Addendum**: What I call “associated item bindings” are commonly referred to as “type bindings” for historical reasons. Nowadays, “type bindings” include assoc type bindings, assoc const bindings and RTN (return type notation) which is why I prefer not to use this outdated term.
Match usize/isize exhaustively with half-open ranges
The long-awaited finale to the saga of [exhaustiveness checking for integers](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/50912)!
```rust
match 0usize {
    0.. => {} // exhaustive!
}
match 0usize {
    0..usize::MAX => {} // helpful error message!
}
```
Features:
- Half-open ranges behave as expected for `usize`/`isize`;
- Trying to use `0..usize::MAX` will tell you that `usize::MAX..` is missing and explain why. No more unhelpful "`_` is missing";
- Everything else stays the same.
This should unblock https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/37854.
Review-wise:
- I recommend looking commit-by-commit;
- This regresses perf because of the added complexity in `IntRange`; hopefully not too much;
- I measured each `#[inline]`, they all help a bit with the perf regression (tho I don't get why);
- I did not touch MIR building; I expect there's an easy PR there that would skip unnecessary comparisons when the range is half-open.
`gen` block tracking issue https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/117078
This PR implements `gen` blocks that implement `Iterator`. Most of the logic with `async` blocks is shared, and thus I renamed various types that were referring to `async` specifically.
An example usage of `gen` blocks is
```rust
fn foo() -> impl Iterator<Item = i32> {
    gen {
        yield 42;
        for i in 5..18 {
            if i.is_even() { continue }
            yield i * 2;
        }
    }
}
```
The limitations (to be resolved) of the implementation are listed in the tracking issue
Lint `non_exhaustive_omitted_patterns` by columns
This is a rework of the `non_exhaustive_omitted_patterns` lint to make it more consistent. The intent of the lint is to help consumers of `non_exhaustive` enums ensure they stay up-to-date with all upstream variants. This rewrite fixes two cases we didn't handle well before:
First, because of details of exhaustiveness checking, the following wouldn't lint `Enum::C` as missing:
```rust
match Some(x) {
    Some(Enum::A) => {}
    Some(Enum::B) => {}
    _ => {}
}
```
Second, because of the fundamental workings of exhaustiveness checking, the following would treat the `true` and `false` cases separately and thus lint about missing variants:
```rust
match (true, x) {
    (true, Enum::A) => {}
    (true, Enum::B) => {}
    (false, Enum::C) => {}
    _ => {}
}
```
Moreover, it would correctly not lint in the case where the pair is flipped, because of asymmetry in how exhaustiveness checking proceeds.
A drawback is that it no longer makes sense to set the lint level per-arm. This will silently break the lint for current users of it (but it's behind a feature gate so that's ok).
The new approach is now independent of the exhaustiveness algorithm; it's a separate pass that looks at patterns column by column. This is another of the motivations for this: I'm glad to move it out of the algorithm, it was akward there.
This PR is almost identical to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/111651. cc `@eholk` who reviewed it at the time. Compared to then, I'm more confident this is the right approach.
(disassembly via `riscv64-unknown-elf-objdump -C -S --disassemble ./esp32c3-hal/target/riscv32imc-unknown-none-elf/release/examples/gpio_interrupt`)
This outcome is superior to hand-coded interrupt routines which, lacking
visibility into any non-assembly body of the interrupt handler, have to
be very conservative and save the [entire CPU state to the stack
frame][full-frame-save]. By instead asking LLVM to only save the
registers that it uses, we defer the decision to the tool with the best
context: it can more accurately account for the cost of spills if it
knows that every additional register used is already at the cost of an
implicit spill.
At the LLVM level, this is apparently [implemented by] marking every
register as "[callee-save]," matching the semantics of an interrupt
handler nicely (it has to leave the CPU state just as it found it after
its `{m|s}ret`).
This approach is not suitable for every interrupt handler, as it makes
no attempt to e.g. save the state in a user-accessible stack frame. For
a full discussion of those challenges and tradeoffs, please refer to
[the interrupt calling conventions RFC][rfc].
Inside rustc, this implementation differs from prior art because LLVM
does not expose the "all-saved" function flavor as a calling convention
directly, instead preferring to use an attribute that allows for
differentiating between "machine-mode" and "superivsor-mode" interrupts.
Finally, some effort has been made to guide those who may not yet be
aware of the differences between machine-mode and supervisor-mode
interrupts as to why no `riscv-interrupt` calling convention is exposed
through rustc, and similarly for why `riscv-interrupt-u` makes no
appearance (as it would complicate future LLVM upgrades).
Marking some features as internal wasn't exactly the most scientific approach, I just marked some
mostly obvious features. While there is a categorization in the macro,
it's not very well upheld (should probably be fixed in another PR).
We always pass `-Ainternal_features` in the testsuite
Replace RPITIT current impl with new strategy that lowers as a GAT
This PR replaces the current implementation of RPITITs with the new implementation that we had under -Zlower-impl-trait-in-trait-to-assoc-ty flag that lowers the RPIT as a GAT on the trait and on the impls that implement that trait.
Opening this PR as a draft because this goes after #112682, ~#112981~ and ~#112983~.
As soon as those are merged, I can rebase and we should run perf, crater and test a lot.
Add filter with following segment while lookup typo for path
From the discussion: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/112917#discussion_r1239150173
Seems we can not get the assoc items for `Struct`, `Enum` in the resolving phase.
A obvious filter is avoid suggesting the same name with the following segment path.
Use `following_seg` can extend the function `smart_resolve_partial_mod_path_errors` for more scenarios, such as `std::sync_error::atomic::AtomicBool` in test case.
Add a tidy check to find unexpected files in UI tests, and clean up the results
While looking at UI tests, I noticed several weird files that were not being tested, some from even pre-1.0. I added a tidy check that fails if any files not known to compiletest or not used in tests (via manual list) are present in the ui tests.
Unfortunately the root entry limit had to be raised by 1 to accommodate the stderr file for one of the tests.
Note user-facing types of coercion failure
When coercing, for example, `Box<A>` into `Box<dyn B>`, make sure that any failure notes mention *those* specific types, rather than mentioning inner types, like "the cast from `A` to `dyn B`".
I expect end-users are often confused when we skip layers of types and only mention the "innermost" part of a coercion, especially when other notes point at HIR, e.g. #111406.
Add support for `cfg(overflow_checks)`
This PR adds support for detecting if overflow checks are enabled in similar fashion as `debug_assertions` are detected. Possible use-case of this, for example, if we want to use checked integer casts in builds with overflow checks, e.g.
```rust
pub fn cast(val: usize)->u16 {
    if cfg!(overflow_checks) {
        val.try_into().unwrap()
    }
    else{
        vas as _
    }
}
```
Stabilize raw-dylib, link_ordinal, import_name_type and -Cdlltool
This stabilizes the `raw-dylib` feature (#58713) for all architectures (i.e., `x86` as it is already stable for all other architectures).
Changes:
* Permit the use of the `raw-dylib` link kind for x86, the `link_ordinal` attribute and the `import_name_type` key for the `link` attribute.
* Mark the `raw_dylib` feature as stable.
* Stabilized the `-Zdlltool` argument as `-Cdlltool`.
* Note the path to `dlltool` if invoking it failed (we don't need to do this if `dlltool` returns an error since it prints its path in the error message).
* Adds tests for `-Cdlltool`.
* Adds tests for being unable to find the dlltool executable, and dlltool failing.
* Fixes a bug where we were checking the exit code of dlltool to see if it failed, but dlltool always returns 0 (indicating success), so instead we need to check if anything was written to `stderr`.
NOTE: As previously noted (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/104218#issuecomment-1315895618) using dlltool within rustc is temporary, but this is not the first time that Rust has added a temporary tool use and argument: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/104218#issuecomment-1318720482
Add cross-language LLVM CFI support to the Rust compiler
This PR adds cross-language LLVM Control Flow Integrity (CFI) support to the Rust compiler by adding the `-Zsanitizer-cfi-normalize-integers` option to be used with Clang `-fsanitize-cfi-icall-normalize-integers` for normalizing integer types (see https://reviews.llvm.org/D139395).
It provides forward-edge control flow protection for C or C++ and Rust -compiled code "mixed binaries" (i.e., for when C or C++ and Rust -compiled code share the same virtual address space). For more information about LLVM CFI and cross-language LLVM CFI support for the Rust compiler, see design document in the tracking issue #89653.
Cross-language LLVM CFI can be enabled with -Zsanitizer=cfi and -Zsanitizer-cfi-normalize-integers, and requires proper (i.e., non-rustc) LTO (i.e., -Clinker-plugin-lto).
Thank you again, ``@bjorn3,`` ``@nikic,`` ``@samitolvanen,`` and the Rust community for all the help!
