7b500d852d Explain why a type is not eligible for impl PointerLike.
The rules were baffling when I ran in to them trying to add some impls,
so I made the compiler explain them to me.

The logic of the successful cases is unchanged, but I did rearrange it
to reverse the order of the primitive and `Adt` cases; this makes
producing the errors easier.

42c00cb647 split up #[rustc_deny_explicit_impl] attribute
This commit splits the `#[rustc_deny_explicit_impl(implement_via_object = ...)]` attribute
into two attributes `#[rustc_deny_explicit_impl]` and `#[rustc_do_not_implement_via_object]`.

This allows us to have special traits that can have user-defined impls but do not have the
automatic trait impl for trait objects (`impl Trait for dyn Trait`).

cleanup region handling: add `LateParamRegionKind`

The second commit is to enable a split between `BoundRegionKind` and `LateParamRegionKind`, by avoiding `BoundRegionKind` where it isn't necessary.

The third comment then adds `LateParamRegionKind` to avoid having the same late-param region for separate bound regions. This fixes #124021.

2620eb42d7 Re-export more rustc_span::symbol things from rustc_span.
`rustc_span::symbol` defines some things that are re-exported from
`rustc_span`, such as `Symbol` and `sym`. But it doesn't re-export some
closely related things such as `Ident` and `kw`. So you can do `use
rustc_span::{Symbol, sym}` but you have to do `use
rustc_span::symbol::{Ident, kw}`, which is inconsistent for no good
reason.

This commit re-exports `Ident`, `kw`, and `MacroRulesNormalizedIdent`,
and changes many `rustc_span::symbol::` qualifiers in `compiler/` to
`rustc_span::`. This is a 200+ net line of code reduction, mostly
because many files with two `use rustc_span` items can be reduced to
one.

Arbitrary self types v2: Weak & NonNull diagnostics

This builds on top of #134262 which is more urgent to review and merge first. I'll likely rebase this PR once that lands.

This is the first part of the diagnostic enhancements planned for Arbitrary Self Types v2.

Various types can be used as method receivers, such as `Rc<>`, `Box<>` and `Arc<>`. The arbitrary self types v2 work allows further types to be made method receivers by implementing the Receiver trait.

With that in mind, it may come as a surprise to people when certain common types do not implement Receiver and thus cannot be used as a method receiver.

The RFC for arbitrary self types v2 therefore proposes emitting specific
lint hints for these cases:
* `NonNull`
* `Weak`
* Raw pointers

The code already emits a hint for this third case, in that it advises folks that the `arbitrary_self_types_pointers` feature may meet their need. This PR adds diagnostic hints for the `Weak` and `NonNull` cases.

Fix ICE when multiple supertrait substitutions need assoc but only one is provided

Dyn traits must have all of their associated types constrained either by:
1. writing them in the dyn trait itself as an associated type bound, like `dyn Iterator<Item = u32>`,
2. A supertrait bound, like `trait ConstrainedIterator: Iterator<Item = u32> {}`, then you may write `dyn ConstrainedIterator` which doesn't need to mention `Item`.

However, the object type lowering code did not consider the fact that there may be multiple supertraits with different substitutions, so it just used the associated type's *def id* as a key for keeping track of which associated types are missing:

1fc691e6dd/compiler/rustc_hir_analysis/src/hir_ty_lowering/dyn_compatibility.rs (L131)

This means that we can have missing associated types when there are mutliple supertraits with different substitutions and only one of them is constrained, like:

```rust
trait Sup<T> {
    type Assoc: Default;
}
impl<T: Default> Sup<T> for () {
    type Assoc = T;
}
impl<T: Default, U: Default> Dyn<T, U> for () {}
trait Dyn<A, B>: Sup<A, Assoc = A> + Sup<B> {}
```

The above example allows you to name `<dyn Dyn<i32, u32> as Sup<u32>>::Assoc` even though it is not possible to project since it's neither constrained by a manually written projection bound or a supertrait bound. This successfully type-checks, but leads to a codegen ICE since we are not able to project the associated type.

This PR fixes the validation for checking that a dyn trait mentions all of its associated type bounds. This is theoretically a breaking change, since you could technically use that `dyn Dyn<A, B>` type mentionedin the example above without actually *projecting* to the bad associated type, but I don't expect it to ever be relevant to a user since it's almost certainly a bug. This is corroborated with the crater results[^crater], which show no failures[^unknown].

Crater: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/133392#issuecomment-2508769703

[^crater]: I cratered this originally with #133397, which is a PR that is stacked on top, then re-ran crater with just the failures from that PR.
[^unknown]: If you look at the crater results, it shows all of the passes as "unknown". I believe this is a crater bug, since looking at the results manually shows them as passes.

(Re-)Implement `impl_trait_in_bindings`

This reimplements the `impl_trait_in_bindings` feature for local bindings.

"`impl Trait` in bindings" serve as a form of *trait* ascription, where the type basically functions as an infer var but additionally registering the `impl Trait`'s trait bounds for the infer type. These trait bounds can be used to enforce that predicates hold, and can guide inference (e.g. for closure signature inference):

```rust
let _: impl Fn(&u8) -> &u8 = |x| x;
```

They are implemented as an additional set of bounds that are registered when the type is lowered during typeck, and then these bounds are tied to a given `CanonicalUserTypeAscription` for borrowck. We enforce these `CanonicalUserTypeAscription` bounds during borrowck to make sure that the `impl Trait` types are sensitive to lifetimes:

```rust
trait Static: 'static {}
impl<T> Static for T where T: 'static {}
let local = 1;
let x: impl Static = &local;
//~^ ERROR `local` does not live long enough
```

r? oli-obk

cc #63065

---

Why can't we just use TAIT inference or something? Well, TAITs in bodies have the problem that they cannot reference lifetimes local to a body. For example:

```rust
type TAIT = impl Display;
let local = 0;
let x: TAIT = &local;
//~^ ERROR `local` does not live long enough
```

That's because TAITs requires us to do *opaque type inference* which is pretty strict, since we need to remap all of the lifetimes of the hidden type to universal regions. This is simply not possible here.

---

I consider this part of the "impl trait everywhere" experiment. I'm not certain if this needs yet another lang team experiment.

Move impl constness into impl trait header

This PR is kind of the opposite of the rejected https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/134114

Instead of moving more things into the `constness` query, we want to keep them where their corresponding hir nodes are lowered. So I gave this a spin for impls, which have an obvious place to be (the impl trait header). And surprisingly it's also a perf improvement (likely just slightly better query & cache usage).

The issue was that removing anything from the `constness` query makes it just return `NotConst`, which is wrong. So I had to change it to `bug!` out if used wrongly, and only then remove the impl blocks from the `constness` query. I think this change is good in general, because it makes using `constness` more robust (as can be seen by how few sites that had to be changed, so it was almost solely used specifically for the purpose of asking for functions' constness). The main thing where this change was not great was in clippy, which was using the `constness` query as a general DefId -> constness map. I added a `DefKind` filter in front of that. If it becomes a more common pattern we can always move that helper into rustc.

Arbitrary self types v2: main compiler changes

This is the main PR in a series of PRs related to Arbitrary Self Types v2, tracked in #44874. Specifically this is step 7 of the plan [described here](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/44874#issuecomment-2122179688), for [RFC 3519](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/3519).

Overall this PR:
* Switches from the `Deref` trait to the new `Receiver` trait when the unstable `arbitrary_self_types` feature is enabled (the simple bit)
* Introduces new algorithms to spot "shadowing"; that is, the case where a newly-added method in an outer smart pointer might end up overriding a pre-existing method in the pointee (the complex bit). Most of this bit was explored in [this earlier perf-testing PR](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/127812#issuecomment-2236911900).
* Lots of tests

This should not break compatibility for:
* Stable users, where it should have no effect
* Users of the existing `arbitrary_self_types` feature (because we implement `Receiver` for `T: Deref`) _unless_ those folks have added methods which may shadow methods in inner types, which we no longer want to allow

Subsequent PRs will add better diagnostics.

It's probably easiest to review this commit-by-commit.

Some asm! diagnostic adjustments and a papercut fix

Best reviewed commit by commit.

We forgot a `normalize` call in intrinsic checking, causing us to allow literal integers, but not named constants containing that literal. This can in theory affect stable code, but only if libstd contains a stable SIMD type that has an array length that is a named constant. I'd assume we'd have noticed by now due to asm! rejecting those outright.

The error message left me scratching my head for a bit, so I added some extra information to the diagnostic, too.

e75660dad3 Arbitrary self types v2: use Receiver trait
In this new version of Arbitrary Self Types, we no longer use the Deref trait
exclusively when working out which self types are valid. Instead, we follow a
chain of Receiver traits. This enables methods to be called on smart pointer
types which fundamentally cannot support Deref (for instance because they are
wrappers for pointers that don't follow Rust's aliasing rules).

This includes:
* Changes to tests appropriately
* New tests for:
  * The basics of the feature
  * Ensuring lifetime elision works properly
  * Generic Receivers
  * A copy of the method subst test enhanced with Receiver

This is really the heart of the 'arbitrary self types v2' feature, and
is the most critical commit in the current PR.

Subsequent commits are focused on:
* Detecting "shadowing" problems, where a smart pointer type can hide
  methods in the pointee.
* Diagnostics and cleanup.

Naming: in this commit, the "Autoderef" type is modified so that it no
longer solely focuses on the "Deref" trait, but can now consider the
"Receiver" trait instead. Should it be renamed, to something like
"TraitFollower"? This was considered, but rejected, because
* even in the Receiver case, it still considers built-in derefs
* the name Autoderef is short and snappy.

Make `Copy` unsafe to implement for ADTs with `unsafe` fields

As a rule, the application of `unsafe` to a declaration requires that use-sites of that declaration also entail `unsafe`. For example, a field declared `unsafe` may only be read in the lexical context of an `unsafe` block.

For nearly all safe traits, the safety obligations of fields are explicitly discharged when they are mentioned in method definitions. For example, idiomatically implementing `Clone` (a safe trait) for a type with unsafe fields will require `unsafe` to clone those fields.

Prior to this commit, `Copy` violated this rule. The trait is marked safe, and although it has no explicit methods, its implementation permits reads of `Self`.

This commit resolves this by making `Copy` conditionally safe to implement. It remains safe to implement for ADTs without unsafe fields, but unsafe to implement for ADTs with unsafe fields.

9ac95c10c0 Introduce default_field_values feature
Initial implementation of `#[feature(default_field_values]`, proposed in https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/3681.

Support default fields in enum struct variant

Allow default values in an enum struct variant definition:

```rust
pub enum Bar {
    Foo {
        bar: S = S,
        baz: i32 = 42 + 3,
    }
}
```

Allow using `..` without a base on an enum struct variant

```rust
Bar::Foo { .. }
```

`#[derive(Default)]` doesn't account for these as it is still gating `#[default]` only being allowed on unit variants.

Support `#[derive(Default)]` on enum struct variants with all defaulted fields

```rust
pub enum Bar {
    #[default]
    Foo {
        bar: S = S,
        baz: i32 = 42 + 3,
    }
}
```

Check for missing fields in typeck instead of mir_build.

Expand test with `const` param case (needs `generic_const_exprs` enabled).

Properly instantiate MIR const

The following works:

```rust
struct S<A> {
    a: Vec<A> = Vec::new(),
}
S::<i32> { .. }
```

Add lint for default fields that will always fail const-eval

We *allow* this to happen for API writers that might want to rely on users'
getting a compile error when using the default field, different to the error
that they would get when the field isn't default. We could change this to
*always* error instead of being a lint, if we wanted.

This will *not* catch errors for partially evaluated consts, like when the
expression relies on a const parameter.

Suggestions when encountering `Foo { .. }` without `#[feature(default_field_values)]`:

 - Suggest adding a base expression if there are missing fields.
 - Suggest enabling the feature if all the missing fields have optional values.
 - Suggest removing `..` if there are no missing fields.

3ce35a4ec5 Make Copy unsafe to implement for ADTs with unsafe fields
As a rule, the application of `unsafe` to a declaration requires that use-sites
of that declaration also require `unsafe`. For example, a field declared
`unsafe` may only be read in the lexical context of an `unsafe` block.

For nearly all safe traits, the safety obligations of fields are explicitly
discharged when they are mentioned in method definitions. For example,
idiomatically implementing `Clone` (a safe trait) for a type with unsafe fields
will require `unsafe` to clone those fields.

Prior to this commit, `Copy` violated this rule. The trait is marked safe, and
although it has no explicit methods, its implementation permits reads of `Self`.

This commit resolves this by making `Copy` conditionally safe to implement. It
remains safe to implement for ADTs without unsafe fields, but unsafe to
implement for ADTs with unsafe fields.

The `type_of` query for anon consts in the type system is actually implemented by feeding the return value during hir ty lowering, not the hir-based logic in `const_arg_anon_type_of`. The HIR based logic is incomplete (doesn't handle all hir nodes) and also generally wrong to call (re-lowers HIR or invokes typeck which can result in query cycles).

These operations are much more about lowering the HIR than about

To accomplish this, `const_evaluatable_predicates_of` had to be changed

lowering anon consts on the fly, it now visits the `rustc_middle::ty`

Robustify and genericize return-type-notation resolution in `resolve_bound_vars`

#129629 implemented return-type-notation (RTN) in its path form, like `where T::method(..): Bound`. As part of lowering, we must record the late-bound vars for the where clause introduced by the method (namely, its early- and late-bound lifetime arguments, since `where T::method(..)` turns into a higher-ranked where clause over all of the lifetimes according to [RFC 3654](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/3654-return-type-notation.html#converting-to-higher-ranked-trait-bounds)).

However, this logic was only looking at the where clauses of the parent item that the `T::method(..)` bound was written on, and not any parent items. This PR generalizes that logic to look at the parent item (i.e. the outer impl or trait) instead and fixes a (debug only) assertion as an effect.

This logic is also more general and likely easier to adapt to more interesting (though likely very far off) cases like non-lifetime binder `for<T: Trait> T::method(..): Send` bounds.

Actually use placeholder regions for trait method late bound regions in `collect_return_position_impl_trait_in_trait_tys`

So in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/113182, I introduced a "diagnostics improvement" in the form of 473c88dfb6, which changes which signature we end up instantiating with placeholder regions and which signature we end up instantiating with fresh region vars so that we have placeholders corresponding to the names of the late-bound regions coming from the *impl*.

However, this is not sound, since now we're essentially no longer proving that *all* instantiations of the trait method are compatible with an instantiation of the impl method, but vice versa (which is weaker). Let's look at the example `tests/ui/impl-trait/in-trait/do-not-imply-from-trait-impl.rs`:

```rust
trait MkStatic {
    fn mk_static(self) -> &'static str;
}
impl MkStatic for &'static str {
    fn mk_static(self) -> &'static str { self }
}
trait Foo {
    fn foo<'a: 'static, 'late>(&'late self) -> impl MkStatic;
}
impl Foo for str {
    fn foo<'a: 'static>(&'a self) -> impl MkStatic + 'static {
        self
    }
}
fn call_foo<T: Foo + ?Sized>(t: &T) -> &'static str {
    t.foo().mk_static()
}
fn main() {
    let s = call_foo(String::from("hello, world").as_str());
    println!("> {s}");
}
```

To collect RPITITs, we were previously instantiating the trait signature with infer vars (`fn(&'?0 str) -> ?1t` where `?1t` is the variable we use to infer the RPITIT) and the impl signature with placeholders (there are no late-bound regions in that signature, so we just have `fn(&'a str) -> Opaque`).

Equating the signatures works, since all we do is unify `?1t` with `Opaque` and `'?0` with `'a`. However, conceptually it *shouldn't* hold, since this definition is not valid for *all* instantiations of the trait method but just the one where `'0` (i.e. `'late`) is equal to `'a` :(

## So what

This PR effectively reverts 473c88dfb6 to fix the unsoundness.

Fixes #133427
Also fixes #133425, which is actually coincidentally another instance of this bug (but not one that is weaponized into UB, just one that causes an ICE in refinement checking).

Bail on more errors in dyn ty lowering

If we have more than one principal trait, or if we have a principal trait with errors in it, then bail with `TyKind::Error` rather than attempting lowering. Lowering a dyn trait with more than one principal just arbitrarily chooses the first one and drops the subsequent ones, and lowering a dyn trait path with errors in it is just kinda useless.

This suppresses unnecessary errors which I think is net-good, but also is important to make sure that we don't end up leaking `{type error}` in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/133388 error messaging :)

Support input/output in vector registers of s390x inline assembly (under asm_experimental_reg feature)

This extends currently clobber-only vector registers (`vreg`) support to allow passing `#[repr(simd)]` types, floats (f32/f64/f128), and integers (i32/i64/i128) as input/output.

This is unstable and gated under new `#![feature(asm_experimental_reg)]` (tracking issue: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/133416). If the feature is not enabled, only clober is supported as before.

| Architecture | Register class | Target feature | Allowed types |
| ------------ | -------------- | -------------- | -------------- |
| s390x | `vreg` | `vector` | `i32`, `f32`, `i64`, `f64`, `i128`, `f128`, `i8x16`, `i16x8`, `i32x4`, `i64x2`, `f32x4`, `f64x2` |

This matches the list of types that are supported by the vector registers in LLVM:
https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/llvmorg-19.1.0/llvm/lib/Target/SystemZ/SystemZRegisterInfo.td#L301-L313

In addition to `core::simd` types and floats listed above, custom `#[repr(simd)]` types of the same size and type are also allowed. All allowed types other than i32/f32/i64/f64/i128, and relevant target features are currently unstable.

Currently there is no SIMD type for s390x in `core::arch`, but this is tracked in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/130869.

Rollup merge of #132795 - compiler-errors:refine-rpitit, r=lcnr
Check `use<..>` in RPITIT for refinement

`#![feature(precise_capturing_in_traits)]` allows users to write `+ use<>` bounds on RPITITs to control what lifetimes are captured by the RPITIT.

Since RPITITs currently also warn for refinement in implementations, this PR extends that refinement check for cases where we *undercapture* in an implementation, since that may be indirectly "promising" a more relaxed outlives bound than the impl author intended.

For an opaque to be refining, we need to capture *fewer* parameters than those mentioned in the captured params of the trait. For example:

```
trait TypeParam<T> {
    fn test() -> impl Sized;
}
// Indirectly capturing a lifetime param through a type param substitution.
impl<'a> TypeParam<&'a ()> for i32 {
    fn test() -> impl Sized + use<> {}
    //~^ WARN impl trait in impl method captures fewer lifetimes than in trait
}
```

Since the opaque in the method (implicitly) captures `use<Self, T>`, and `Self = i32, T = &'a ()` in the impl, we must mention `'a` in our `use<..>` on the impl.

Deny capturing late-bound ty/const params in nested opaques

First, this reverts a7f609504c. I can't exactly remember why I approved this specific bit of https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/132466; specifically, I don't know that the purpose of that commit is, and afaict we will never have an opaque that captures late-bound params through a const because opaques can't be used inside of anon consts. Am I missing something `@cjgillot?` Since I can't see a case where this matters, and no tests seem to fail.

The second commit adds a `deny_late_regions: bool` to distinguish `Scope::LateBoundary` which should deny *any* late-bound params or just ty/consts. Then, when resolving opaques we wrap ourselves in a `Scope::LateBoundary { deny_late_regions: false }` so that we deny late-bound ty/const, which fixes a bunch of ICEs that all vaguely look like `impl for<T> Trait<Assoc = impl OtherTrait<T>>`.

I guess this could be achieved other ways; for example, with a different scope kind, or maybe we could just reuse `Scope::Opaque`. But this seems a bit more verbose. I'm open to feedback anyways.

Fixes #131535
Fixes #131637
Fixes #132530

I opted to remove those crashes tests ^ without adding them as regular tests, since they're basically triggering uninteresting late-bound ICEs far off in the trait solver, and the reason that existing tests such as `tests/ui/type-alias-impl-trait/non-lifetime-binder-in-constraint.rs` don't ICE are kinda just coincidental (i.e. due to a missing impl block). I don't really feel motivated to add random permutations to tests just to exercise non-lifetime binders.

Instead, replicate it by improving the span of the opaque in `check_opaque_meets_bounds`.

This has two consequences:
1. We now prefer "concrete type differs" errors, since we'll hit those first before we check the opaque is WF.
2. Spans have gotten slightly worse.

Specifically, (2.) could be improved by adding a new obligation cause that explains that the definition's environment has stronger assumptions than the declaration.

Remove unnecessary pub enum glob-imports from `rustc_middle::ty`

We used to have an idiom in the compiler where we'd prefix or suffix all the variants of an enum, for example `BoundRegionKind`, with something like `Br`, and then *glob-import* that enum variant directly.

`@noratrieb` brought this up, and I think that it's easier to read when we just use the normal style `EnumName::Variant`.

This PR is a bit large, but it's just naming.

The only somewhat opinionated change that this PR does is rename `BorrowKind::Imm` to `BorrowKind::Immutable` and same for the other variants. I think these enums are used sparingly enough that the extra length is fine.

compiler: Directly use rustc_abi almost everywhere

Use rustc_abi instead of rustc_target where applicable. This is mostly described by the following substitutions:
```rust
match path_substring {
    rustc_target::spec::abi::Abi => rustc_abi::ExternAbi,
    rustc_target::abi::call => rustc_target::callconv,
    rustc_target::abi => rustc_abi,
}
```

A number of spot-fixes make that not quite the whole story.

The main exception is in 33edc68 where I get a lot more persnickety about how things are imported, especially in `rustc_middle::ty::layout`, not just from where. This includes putting an end to a reexport of `rustc_middle::ty::ReprOptions`, for the same reason that the rest of this change is happening: reexports mostly confound things.

This notably omits rustc_passes and the ast crates, as I'm still examining a question I have about how they do stability checking of `extern "Abi"` strings and if I can simplify their logic. The rustc_abi and rustc_target crates also go untouched because they will be entangled in that cleanup.

Lifetime capture rules in 2024 are modified to capture more lifetimes, which sometimes lead to some non-local borrowck errors. This PR attempts to link these back together with a useful note pointing out the capture rule changes.

This is not a blocking concern, but I'd appreciate feedback (though, again, I'd like to stress that I don't want to block this PR on this): I'm worried about this note drowning in the sea of other diagnostics that borrowck emits. Make sure `type_param_predicates` resolves correctly for RPITIT

After #132194, we end up lowering the item bounds for an RPITIT in an `ItemCtxt` whose def id is the *synthetic GAT*, not the opaque type from the HIR.

This means that when we're resolving a shorthand projection like `T::Assoc`, we call the `type_param_predicates` function with the `item_def_id` of the *GAT* and not the opaque. That function operates on the HIR, and is not designed to work with the `Node::Synthetic` that gets fed for items synthesized by the compiler...

This PR reuses the trick we use elsewhere in lowering, where we intercept whether an item comes from RPITIT lowering, and forwards the query off to the correct item.

Remap impl-trait lifetimes on HIR instead of AST lowering

Current AST->HIR lowering goes out of its way to remap lifetimes for opaque types. This is complicated and leaks into upstream and downstream code.

This PR stops trying to be clever during lowering, and prefers to do this remapping during the HIR->ty lowering. The remapping computation easily fits into the bound var resolution code. Its result can be used in by `generics_of` and `hir_ty_lowering::new_opaque` to add the proper parameters and arguments.

See an example on the doc for query `opaque_captured_lifetimes`.

6d8d79595e Reject generic self types.
The RFC for arbitrary self types v2 declares that we should reject
"generic" self types. This commit does so.

The definition of "generic" was unclear in the RFC, but has been
explored in
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/129147
and the conclusion is that "generic" means any `self` type which
is a type parameter defined on the method itself, or references
to such a type.

This approach was chosen because other definitions of "generic"
don't work. Specifically,
* we can't filter out generic type _arguments_, because that would
  filter out Rc<Self> and all the other types of smart pointer
  we want to support;
* we can't filter out all type params, because Self itself is a
  type param, and because existing Rust code depends on other
  type params declared on the type (as opposed to the method).

This PR decides to make a new error code for this case, instead of
reusing the existing E0307 error. This makes the code a
bit more complex, but it seems we have an opportunity to provide
specific diagnostics for this case so we should do so.

This PR filters out generic self types whether or not the
'arbitrary self types' feature is enabled. However, it's believed
that it can't have any effect on code which uses stable Rust, since
there are no stable traits which can be used to indicate a valid
generic receiver type, and thus it would have been impossible to
write code which could trigger this new error case.
It is however possible that this could break existing code which
uses either of the unstable `arbitrary_self_types` or
`receiver_trait` features. This breakage is intentional; as
we move arbitrary self types towards stabilization we don't want
to continue to support generic such types.

This PR adds lots of extra tests to arbitrary-self-from-method-substs.
Most of these are ways to trigger a "type mismatch" error which
9b82580c73/compiler/rustc_hir_typeck/src/method/confirm.rs (L519)
hopes can be minimized by filtering out generics in this way.
We remove a FIXME from confirm.rs suggesting that we make this change.
It's still possible to cause type mismatch errors, and a subsequent
PR may be able to improve diagnostics in this area, but it's harder
to cause these errors without contrived uses of the turbofish.

This is a part of the arbitrary self types v2 project,

This adds `TypingMode` and uses it in most places. We do not yet remove `Reveal` from `param_env`s. This and other future work as tracked in #132279 and via `FIXME`s.

Fetching the `TypingMode` of the `InferCtxt` asserts that the `TypingMode` agrees with `ParamEnv::reveal` to make sure we don't introduce any subtle bugs here. This will be unnecessary once `ParamEnv::reveal` no longer exists.

As the `TypingMode` is now a part of the query input, I've merged the coherence and non-coherence caches for the new solver. I've also enabled the local `infcx` cache during coherence by clearing the cache when forking it with a different `TypingMode`.

#### `TypingMode::from_param_env`

I am using this even in cases where I know that the `param_env` will always be `Reveal::UserFacing`. This is to make it easier to correctly refactor this code in the future, any time we use `Reveal::UserFacing` in a body while not defining its opaque types is incorrect and should use a `TypingMode` which only reveals opaques defined by that body instead, cc #124598

Collect item bounds for RPITITs from trait where clauses just like associated types

We collect item bounds from trait where clauses for *associated types*, i.e. this:

```rust
trait Foo
where
    Self::Assoc: Send
{
    type Assoc;
}
```

Becomes this:

```rust
trait Foo {
    type Assoc: Send;
}
```

Today, with RPITITs/AFIT and return-type notation, we don't do that, i.e.:

```rust
trait Foo where Self::method(..): Send {
    fn method() -> impl Sized;
}
fn is_send(_: impl Send) {}
fn test<T: Foo>() {
    is_send(T::method());
}
```

...which fails on nightly today.

 Turns out it's super easy to fix this, and we just need to use the `associated_type_bounds` lowering function in `explicit_item_bounds_with_filter`, which has that logic baked in.

Hack out effects support for old solver

Opening this for vibes

Turns out that a basic, somewhat incomplete implementation of host effects is achievable in the old trait solver pretty easily. This should be sufficient for us to use in the standard library itself.

Regarding incompleteness, maybe we should always treat host predicates as ambiguous in intercrate mode (at least in the old solver) to avoid any worries about accidental impl overlap or something.

I think it's an incredibly confusing footgun to expose both `obligation_cause.span` and `obligation_cause.span()`. Especially because `ObligationCause::span()` (the method) seems to just be hacking around a single quirk in the way we set up obligation causes for match arms.

First commit removes the need for that hack, with only one diagnostic span changing (but IMO not really getting worse -- I'd argue that it was already confusing).

Cleanup: Move an impl-Trait check from AST validation to AST lowering

Namely the one that rejects `impl Trait` in qself types and non-final path segments.
There's no good reason to perform this during AST validation.
We have better infrastructure in place in the AST lowerer (`ImplTraitContext`).
This shaves off a lot of code.
We now lower `impl Trait` in bad positions to `{type error}` which allows us to
remove a special case from HIR ty lowering.

Coincidentally fixes #126725. Well, it only *masks* it by passing `{type error}` to HIR analysis instead of a "bad" opaque. I was able to find a new reproducer for it. See the issue.

As part of the "arbitrary self types v2" project, we are going to replace the current `Receiver` trait with a new mechanism based on a new, different `Receiver` trait.

This PR renames the old trait to get it out the way. Naming is hard. Options considered included:
* HardCodedReceiver (because it should only be used for things in the standard library, and hence is sort-of hard coded)

These are all bad names, but fortunately this will be temporary. Assuming the new mechanism proceeds to stabilization as intended, the legacy trait will be removed altogether.

Although we expect this trait to be used only in the standard library, we suspect it may be in use elsehwere, so we're landing this change separately to identify any surprising breakages.

make unsupported_calling_conventions a hard error

This has been a future-compat lint (not shown in dependencies) since Rust 1.55, released 3 years ago. Hopefully that was enough time so this can be made a hard error now. Given that long timeframe, I think it's justified to skip the "show in dependencies" stage. There were [not many crates hitting this](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/86231#issuecomment-866300943) even when the lint was originally added.

This should get cratered, and I assume then it needs a t-compiler FCP. (t-compiler because this looks entirely like an implementation oversight -- for the vast majority of ABIs, we already have a hard error, but some were initially missed, and we are finally fixing that.)

We currently have logic to avoid reporting lifetime bivariance ("lifetime parameter ... is never used") errors when a struct has field resolution errors. However, this doesn't apply transitively. This PR implements a simple visitor to do so.

This was reported [here](https://twitter.com/fasterthanlime/status/1846257921086165033) since a `derive(Deserialize, Serialize)` ends up generating helper structs which have bivariant lifetimes due to containing the offending struct (that's being derived on).

This PR turns all the `Vec<PredicateObligation>` into a single type alias while avoiding referring to `Vec` around it, then swaps the type over to `ThinVec<PredicateObligation>` and fixes the fallout. This also contains an implementation of `ThinVec::extract_if`, copied from `Vec::extract_if` and currently being upstreamed to https://github.com/Gankra/thin-vec/pull/66.

This leads to a small (0.2-0.7%) performance gain in the latest perf run.

Check ABI target compatibility for function pointers

Tracking issue: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/130260
Related tracking issue: #87678

Compatibility of an ABI for a target was previously only performed on function definitions and `extern` blocks. This PR adds it also to function pointers to be consistent.

This might have broken some of the `tests/ui/` depending on the platform, so a try run seems like a good idea.

Also this might break existing code, because we now emit extra errors. Does this require a crater run?

# Example
```rust
// build with: --target=x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
// These raise E0570
extern "thiscall" fn foo() {}
0d8a978e8a intrinsics.fmuladdf{16,32,64,128}: expose llvm.fmuladd.* semantics
Add intrinsics `fmuladd{f16,f32,f64,f128}`. This computes `(a * b) +
c`, to be fused if the code generator determines that (i) the target
instruction set has support for a fused operation, and (ii) that the
fused operation is more efficient than the equivalent, separate pair
of `mul` and `add` instructions.
https://llvm.org/docs/LangRef.html#llvm-fmuladd-intrinsic
MIRI support is included for f32 and f64.
The codegen_cranelift uses the `fma` function from libc, which is a
correct implementation, but without the desired performance semantic. I
think this requires an update to cranelift to expose a suitable
instruction in its IR.
I have not tested with codegen_gcc, but it should behave the same
way (using `fma` from libc).
Retire the `unnamed_fields` feature for now
`#![feature(unnamed_fields)]` was implemented in part in #115131 and #115367, however work on that feature has (afaict) stalled and in the mean time there have been some concerns raised (e.g.[^1][^2]) about whether `unnamed_fields` is worthwhile to have in the language, especially in its current desugaring. Because it represents a compiler implementation burden including a new kind of anonymous ADT and additional complication to field selection, and is quite prone to bugs today, I'm choosing to remove the feature.
However, since I'm not one to really write a bunch of words, I'm specifically *not* going to de-RFC this feature. This PR essentially *rolls back* the state of this feature to "RFC accepted but not yet implemented"; however if anyone wants to formally unapprove the RFC from the t-lang side, then please be my guest. I'm just not totally willing to summarize the various language-facing reasons for why this feature is or is not worthwhile, since I'm coming from the compiler side mostly.
Rollup merge of #130367 - compiler-errors:super-unconstrained, r=spastorino
Check elaborated projections from dyn don't mention unconstrained late bound lifetimes
Check that the projections that are *not* explicitly written but which we deduce from elaborating the principal of a `dyn` *also* do not reference unconstrained late-bound lifetimes, just like the ones that the user writes by hand.
That is to say, given:
```
trait Foo<T>: Bar<Assoc = T> {}

trait Bar {
    type Assoc;
}
```
The type `dyn for<'a> Foo<&'a T>` (basically) elaborates to `dyn for<'a> Foo<&'a T> + for<'a> Bar<Assoc = &'a T>`[^1]. However, the `Bar` projection predicate is not well-formed, since `'a` must show up in the trait's arguments to be referenced in the term of a projection. We must error in this situation[^well], or else `dyn for<'a> Foo<&'a T>` is unsound.
We already detect this for user-written projections during HIR->rustc_middle conversion, so this largely replicates that logic using the helper functions that were already conveniently defined.
---
I'm cratering this first to see the fallout; if it's minimal or zero, then let's land it as-is. If not, the way that this is implemented is very conducive to an FCW.
---
Fixes #130347
[^1]: We don't actually elaborate it like that in rustc; we only keep the principal trait ref `Foo<&'a T>` and the projection part of `Bar<Assoc = ...>`, but it's useful to be a bit verbose here for the purpose of explaining the issue.
[^well]: Well, we could also make `dyn for<'a> Foo<&'a T>` *not* implement `for<'a> Bar<Assoc = &'a T>`, but this is inconsistent with the case where the user writes `Assoc = ...` in the type itself, and it overly complicates the implementation of trait objects' built-in impls.
Use wide pointers consistenly across the compiler
This PR replace every use of "fat pointer" for the more recent "wide pointer" terminology.
Since some time T-lang as preferred the "wide pointer" terminology, as can be seen on [the last RFCs](https://github.com/search?q=repo%3Arust-lang%2Frfcs+%22wide+pointer%22&type=code), on some [lints](https://doc.rust-lang.org/rustc/lints/listing/warn-by-default.html#ambiguous-wide-pointer-comparisons), but also in [the reference](https://doc.rust-lang.org/stable/reference/expressions/operator-expr.html?highlight=wide%20pointer#pointer-to-pointer-cast).
Currently we have a [mix of both](https://github.com/search?q=repo%3Arust-lang%2Frust+%22wide+pointer%22&type=code) (including in error messages), which isn't great, but with this PR no more.
Assert that `explicit_super_predicates_of` and `explicit_item_super_predicates` truly only contains bounds for the type itself
We distinguish _implied_ predicates (anything that is implied from elaborating a trait bound) from _super_ predicates, which are are the subset of implied predicates that share the same self type as the trait predicate we're elaborating. This was originally done in #107614, which fixed a large class of ICEs and strange errors where the compiler expected the self type of a trait predicate not to change when elaborating super predicates.
Specifically, super predicates are special for various reasons: they're the valid candidates for trait upcasting, are the only predicates we elaborate when doing closure signature inference, etc. So making sure that we get this list correct and don't accidentally "leak" any other predicates into this list is quite important.
This PR adds some debug assertions that we're in fact not doing so, and it fixes an oversight in the effect desugaring rework.
Implement Return Type Notation (RTN)'s path form in where clauses
Implement return type notation (RTN) in path position for where clauses. We already had RTN in associated type position ([e.g.](https://play.rust-lang.org/?version=nightly&mode=debug&edition=2021&gist=627a4fb8e2cb334863fbd08ed3722c09)), but per [the RFC](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/3654-return-type-notation.html#where-rtn-can-be-used-for-now):
> As a standalone type, RTN can only be used as the Self type of a where-clause [...]
Specifically, in order to enable code like:
```rust
trait Foo {
    fn bar() -> impl Sized;
}

fn is_send(_: impl Send) {}

fn test<T>()
where
    T: Foo,
    T::bar(..): Send,
{
    is_send(T::bar());
}
```
* In the resolver, when we see a `TyKind::Path` whose final segment is `GenericArgs::ParenthesizedElided` (i.e. `(..)`), resolve that path in the *value* namespace, since we're looking for a method.
* When lowering where clauses in HIR lowering, we first try to intercept an RTN self type via `lower_ty_maybe_return_type_notation`. If we find an RTN type, we lower it manually in a way that respects its higher-ranked-ness (see below) and resolves to the corresponding RPITIT. Anywhere else, we'll emit the same "return type notation not allowed in this position yet" error we do when writing RTN in every other position.
* In `resolve_bound_vars`, we add some special treatment for RTN types in where clauses. Specifically, we need to add new lifetime variables to our binders for the early- and late-bound vars we encounter on the method. This implements the higher-ranked desugaring [laid out in the RFC](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/3654-return-type-notation.html#converting-to-higher-ranked-trait-bounds).
This PR also adds a bunch of tests, mostly negative ones (testing error messages).
In a follow-up PR, I'm going to mark RTN as no longer incomplete, since this PR basically finishes the impl surface that we should initially stabilize, and the RFC was accepted.
Implement a Method to Seal `DiagInner`'s Suggestions
This PR adds a method on `DiagInner` called `.seal_suggestions()` to prevent new suggestions from being added while preserving existing suggestions.
This is useful because currently there is no way to prevent new suggestions from being added to a diagnostic. `.disable_suggestions()` is the closest but it gets rid of all suggestions before and after the call.
Therefore, `.seal_suggestions()` can be used when, for example, misspelled keyword is detected and reported. In such cases, we may want to prevent other suggestions from being added to the diagnostic, as they would likely be meaningless once the misspelled keyword is identified. For context: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/129899#discussion_r1741307132
To store an additional state, the type of the `suggestions` field in `DiagInner` was changed into a three variant enum. While this change affects files across different crates, care was taken to preserve the existing code's semantics. This is validated by the fact that all UI tests pass without any modifications.
Rescope temp lifetime in if-let into IfElse with migration lint
Tracking issue #124085
This PR shortens the temporary lifetime to cover only the pattern matching and consequent branch of a `if let`.
At the expression location, means that the lifetime is shortened from previously the deepest enclosing block or statement in Edition 2021. This warrants an Edition change.
Coming with the Edition change, this patch also implements an edition lint to warn about the change and a safe rewrite suggestion to preserve the 2021 semantics in most cases.
Correctly handle stability of `#[diagnostic]` attributes
This commit changes the way we treat the stability of attributes in the
`#[diagnostic]` namespace. Instead of relaying on ad-hoc checks to
ensure at call side that a certain attribute is really usable at that
location it centralises the logic to one place. For diagnostic
attributes comming from other crates it just skips serializing
attributes that are not stable and that do not have the corresponding
feature enabled. For attributes from the current crate we can just use
the feature information provided by `TyCtx`.
Rollup merge of #129664 - adetaylor:arbitrary-self-types-pointers-feature-gate, r=wesleywiser
Arbitrary self types v2: pointers feature gate.
The main `arbitrary_self_types` feature gate will shortly be reused for a new version of arbitrary self types which we are amending per [this RFC](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/blob/master/text/3519-arbitrary-self-types-v2.md). The main amendments are:
* _do_ support `self` types which can't safely implement `Deref`
* do _not_ support generic `self` types
* do _not_ support raw pointers as `self` types.
This PR relates to the last of those bullet points: this strips pointer support from the current `arbitrary_self_types` feature. We expect this to cause some amount of breakage for crates using this unstable feature to allow raw pointer self types. If that's the case, we want to know about it, and we want crate authors to know of the upcoming changes.
For now, this can be resolved by adding the new
`arbitrary_self_types_pointers` feature to such crates. If we determine that use of raw pointers as self types is common, then we may maintain that as an unstable feature even if we come to stabilize the rest of the `arbitrary_self_types` support in future. If we don't hear that this PR is causing breakage, then perhaps we don't need it at all, even behind an unstable feature gate.
Suggest `impl Trait` for References to Bare Trait in Function Header
Fixes #125139
This PR suggests `impl Trait` when `&Trait` is found as a function parameter type or return type. This makes use of existing diagnostics by adding `peel_refs()` when checking for type equality.
Additionaly, it makes a few other improvements:
1. Checks if functions inside impl blocks have bare trait in their headers.
2. Introduces a trait `NextLifetimeParamName` similar to the existing `NextTypeParamName` for suggesting a lifetime name. Also, abstracts out the common logic between the two trait impls.
### Related Issues
I ran into a bunch of related diagnostic issues but couldn't fix them within the scope of this PR. So, I have created the following issues:
Remove `#[macro_use] extern crate tracing`, round 4
Because explicit importing of macros via use items is nicer (more standard and readable) than implicit importing via #[macro_use]. Continuing the work from #124511, #124914, and #125434. After this PR no `rustc_*` crates use `#[macro_use] extern crate tracing` except for `rustc_codegen_gcc` which is a special case and I will do separately.
d9a2cc4dae Auto merge of #128506 - compiler-errors:by-move-body, r=cjgillot
Stop storing a special inner body for the coroutine by-move body for async closures
...and instead, just synthesize an item which is treated mostly normally by the MIR pipeline.
This PR does a few things:
* We synthesize a new `DefId` for the by-move body of a closure, which has its `mir_built` fed with the output of the `ByMoveBody` MIR transformation, and some other relevant queries.
* This has the `DefKind::ByMoveBody`, which we use to distinguish it from "real" bodies (that come from HIR) which need to be borrowck'd. Introduce `TyCtxt::is_synthetic_mir` to skip over `mir_borrowck` which is called by `mir_promoted`; borrowck isn't really possible to make work ATM since it heavily relies being called on a body generated from HIR, and is redundant by the construction of the by-move-body.
* Remove the special `PassManager` hacks for handling the inner `by_move_body` stored within the coroutine's mir body. Instead, this body is fed like a regular MIR body, so it's goes through all of the `tcx.*_mir` stages normally (build -> promoted -> ...etc... -> optimized) .
* Remove the `InstanceKind::ByMoveBody` shim, since now we have a "regular" def id, we can just use `InstanceKind::Item`. This also allows us to remove the corresponding hacks from codegen, such as in `fn_sig_for_fn_abi` .
Notable remarks:
* ~~I know it's kind of weird to be using `DefKind::Closure` here, since it's not a distinct closure but just a new MIR body. I don't believe it really matters, but I could also use a different `DefKind`... maybe one that we could use for synthetic MIR bodies in general?~~ edit: We're doing this now.
