e593c3b893 Changed most vec! invocations to use square braces
Most of the Rust community agrees that the vec! macro is clearer when
called using square brackets [] instead of regular brackets (). Most of
these ocurrences are from before macros allowed using different types of
brackets.

There is one left unchanged in a pretty-print test, as the pretty
printer still wants it to have regular brackets.

63ded0518a Overhaul char_lit().
This commit does the following.

- Removes parsing support for '\X12', '\u123456' and '\U12345678' char
  literals. These are no longer valid Rust and rejected by the lexer.
  (This strange-sounding situation occurs because the parser rescans
  char literals to compute their value.)

- Rearranges the function so that all the escaped values are handled in
  a single `match`, and changes the error-handling to use vanilla
  assert!() and unwrap().

826f673664 Lazily construct panic messages in char_lit().
This reduces the time taken to run
`rustc -Zparse-only rustc-benchmarks/issue-32278-big-array-of-strings`
from 0.18s to 0.15s on my machine, and reduces the number of
instructions (as measured by Cachegrind) from 1.34B to 1.01B.

With the change applied, the time to fully compile that benchmark is
1.96s, so this is a 1.5% improvement.

Added tokenstream parser procedure

A tiny PR that simply adds a procedure for parsing `TokenStream`s to the parser in `src/libsyntax`. This is to ease using `TokenStream`s with the current (old) procedural macro system.

9bb3ea0feb Rollup merge of #34436 - jseyfried:no_block_expr, r=eddyb
To allow these braced macro invocation, this PR removes the optional expression from `ast::Block` and instead uses a `StmtKind::Expr` at the end of the statement list.

Currently, braced macro invocations in blocks can expand into statements (and items) except when they are last in a block, in which case they can only expand into expressions.

For example,
```rust
macro_rules! make_stmt {
    () => { let x = 0; }
}
fn f() {
    make_stmt! {} //< This is OK...
    let x = 0; //< ... unless this line is commented out.
}
```

Fixes #34418.

24e7491660 Add an abs_path member to FileMap, use it when writing debug info.
When items are inlined from extern crates, the filename in the debug info
is taken from the FileMap that's serialized in the rlib metadata.
Currently this is just FileMap.name, which is whatever path is passed to rustc.
Since libcore and libstd are built by invoking rustc with relative paths,
they wind up with relative paths in the rlib, and when linked into a binary
the debug info uses relative paths for the names, but since the compilation
directory for the final binary, tools trying to read source filenames
will wind up with bad paths. We noticed this in Firefox with source
filenames from libcore/libstd having bad paths.

This change stores an absolute path in FileMap.abs_path, and uses that
if available for writing debug info. This is not going to magically make
debuggers able to find the source, but it will at least provide sensible
paths.

2d9831dea5 Interpolate AST nodes in quasiquote.
This changes the `ToTokens` implementations for expressions, statements,
etc. with almost-trivial ones that produce `Interpolated(*Nt(...))`
pseudo-tokens. In this way, quasiquote now works the same way as macros
do: already-parsed AST fragments are used as-is, not reparsed.

The `ToSource` trait is removed. Quasiquote no longer involves
pretty-printing at all, which removes the need for the
`encode_with_hygiene` hack. All associated machinery is removed.

A new `Nonterminal` is added, NtArm, which the parser now interpolates.
This is just for quasiquote, not macros (although it could be in the
future).

`ToTokens` is no longer implemented for `Arg` (although this could be
added again) and `Generics` (which I don't think makes sense).

This breaks any compiler extensions that relied on the ability of
`ToTokens` to turn AST fragments back into inspectable token trees. For
this reason, this closes #16987.

As such, this is a [breaking-change].

eeb94886ad std: Remove deprecated/unstable num functionality
This commit removes all the old casting/generic traits from `std::num` that are
no longer in use by the standard library. This additionally removes the old
`strconv` module which has not seen much use in quite a long time. All generic
functionality has been supplanted with traits in the `num` crate and the
`strconv` module is supplanted with the [rust-strconv crate][rust-strconv].

- Other functions in libsyntax call panic! explicitly for now if they rely on panicing behaviour.
- 'panictry!' macro added as scaffolding while converting panicing functions.
  (This does the same as 'unwrap()' but is easier to grep for and turn into try!())
- Leaves panicing wrappers for the following functions so that the

232424d995 Stabilize std::num
This commit stabilizes the `std::num` module:

* The `Int` and `Float` traits are deprecated in favor of (1) the
  newly-added inherent methods and (2) the generic traits available in
  rust-lang/num.

* The `Zero` and `One` traits are reintroduced in `std::num`, which
  together with various other traits allow you to recover the most
  common forms of generic programming.

* The `FromStrRadix` trait, and associated free function, is deprecated
  in favor of inherent implementations.

* A wide range of methods and constants for both integers and floating
  point numbers are now `#[stable]`, having been adjusted for integer
  guidelines.

* `is_positive` and `is_negative` are renamed to `is_sign_positive` and
  `is_sign_negative`, in order to address #22985

* The `Wrapping` type is moved to `std::num` and stabilized;
  `WrappingOps` is deprecated in favor of inherent methods on the
  integer types, and direct implementation of operations on
  `Wrapping<X>` for each concrete integer type `X`.

makes `0b12` etc. an error: 2 isn't a valid base 2 digit).

This may break some macro invocations of macros with `tt` (or syntax
extensions) that rely on adjacent digits being separate tokens and hence
is a

[breaking-change]

The fix is to separate the tokens, e.g. `0b12` -> `0b1 2`.

eb2f1d925f rustc: Add support for extern crate foo as bar
The compiler will now issue a warning for crates that have syntax of the form
`extern crate "foo" as bar`, but it will still continue to accept this syntax.
Additionally, the string `foo-bar` will match the crate name `foo_bar` to assist
in the transition period as well.

This patch will land hopefully in tandem with a Cargo patch that will start
translating all crate names to have underscores instead of hyphens.

This commit deprecates the majority of std::old_io::fs in favor of std::fs and
its new functionality. Some functions remain non-deprecated but are now behind a
feature gate called `old_fs`. These functions will be deprecated once
suitable replacements have been implemented.

The compiler has been migrated to new `std::fs` and `std::path` APIs where
appropriate as part of this change.

This allows to create proper debuginfo line information for items inlined from other crates (e.g. instantiations of generics).
Only the codemap's 'metadata' is stored in a crate's metadata. That is, just filename, line-beginnings, etc. but not the actual source code itself. We are thus missing the opportunity of making Rust the first "open-source-only" programming language out there. Pity.

fa9d2230a6 make codemap more robust in face of ill-formed spans.
This can be considered partial work on #8256.

The main observable change: macro expansion sometimes results in spans
where `lo > hi`; so for now, when we have such a span, do not attempt
to return a snippet result.

(Longer term, we might think about whether we could still present a
snippet for the cases where this arises, e.g. perhaps by showing the
whole macro as the snippet, assuming that is the sole cause of such
spans; or by somehow looking up the closest AST node that holds both
`lo` and `hi`, and showing that.)

As a drive-by, revised the API to return a `Result` rather than an
`Option`, with better information-packed error value that should help
us (and maybe also our users) identify the causes of such problems in
the future. Ideally the call-sites that really want an actual snippet
would be updated to catch the newly added `Err` case and print
something meaningful about it, but that is not part of this PR.

* `FromStr` is now stable
* `FromStr::Err` is now stable
* `FromStr::from_str` is now stable
* `StrExt::parse` is now stable
* `FromStr for bool` is now stable
* `FromStr for $float` is now stable
* `FromStr for $integral` is now stable
* Errors returned from stable `FromStr` implementations are stable

44440e5c18 core: split into fmt::Show and fmt::String
fmt::Show is for debugging, and can and should be implemented for
all public types. This trait is used with `{:?}` syntax. There still
exists #[derive(Show)].

fmt::String is for types that faithfully be represented as a String.
Because of this, there is no way to derive fmt::String, all
implementations must be purposeful. It is used by the default format
syntax, `{}`.

This will break most instances of `{}`, since that now requires the type
to impl fmt::String. In most cases, replacing `{}` with `{:?}` is the
correct fix. Types that were being printed specifically for users should
receive a fmt::String implementation to fix this.

f71b852d38 rollup merge of #19103: huonw/literal-suffixes
Futureproof Rust for fancier suffixed literals. The Rust compiler tokenises a literal followed immediately (no whitespace) by an identifier as a single token: (for example) the text sequences `"foo"bar`, `1baz` and `1u1024` are now a single token rather than the pairs `"foo"` `bar`, `1` `baz` and `1u` `1024` respectively.

The compiler rejects all such suffixes in the parser, except for the 12 numeric suffixes we have now.

I'm fairly sure this will affect very few programs, since it's not currently legal to have `<literal><identifier>` in a Rust program, except in a macro invocation. Any macro invocation relying on this behaviour can simply separate the two tokens with whitespace: `foo!("bar"baz)` becomes `foo!("bar" baz)`.

This implements [RFC 463](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/blob/master/text/0463-future-proof-literal-suffixes.md), and so closes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/19088.

936d999b52 Use common variants for open and close delimiters
This common representation for delimeters should make pattern matching easier. Having a separate `token::DelimToken` enum also allows us to enforce the invariant that the opening and closing delimiters must be the same in `ast::TtDelimited`, removing the need to ensure matched delimiters when working with token trees.

7828c3dd28 Rename fail! to panic!
https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/221

The current terminology of "task failure" often causes problems when
writing or speaking about code. You often want to talk about the
possibility of an operation that returns a Result "failing", but cannot
because of the ambiguity with task failure. Instead, you have to speak
of "the failing case" or "when the operation does not succeed" or other
circumlocutions.

Likewise, we use a "Failure" header in rustdoc to describe when
operations may fail the task, but it would often be helpful to separate
out a section describing the "Err-producing" case.

We have been steadily moving away from task failure and toward Result as
an error-handling mechanism, so we should optimize our terminology
accordingly: Result-producing functions should be easy to describe.

To update your code, rename any call to `fail!` to `panic!` instead.
Assuming you have not created your own macro named `panic!`, this
will work on UNIX based systems:

    grep -lZR 'fail!' . | xargs -0 -l sed -i -e 's/fail!/panic!/g'

You can of course also do this by hand.

971d776aa5 Add Span and separate open/close delims to TTDelim
This came up when working [on the gl-rs generator extension](990383de80/src/gl_generator/lib.rs (L135-L146)).

The new definition of `TTDelim` adds an associated `Span` that covers the whole token tree and enforces the invariant that a delimited sequence of token trees must have an opening and closing delimiter.

A `get_span` method has also been added to `TokenTree` type to make it easier to implement better error messages for syntax extensions.

[breaking-change]

1. The internal layout for traits has changed from (vtable, data) to (data, vtable). If you were relying on this in unsafe transmutes, you might get some very weird and apparently unrelated errors. You should not be doing this! Prefer not to do this at all, but if you must, you should use raw::TraitObject rather than hardcoding rustc's internal representation into your code.

2. The minimal type of reference-to-vec-literals (e.g., `&[1, 2, 3]`) is now a fixed size vec (e.g., `&[int, ..3]`) where it used to be an unsized vec (e.g., `&[int]`). If you want the unszied type, you must explicitly give the type (e.g., `let x: &[_] = &[1, 2, 3]`). Note in particular where multiple blocks must have the same type (e.g., if and else clauses, vec elements), the compiler will not coerce to the unsized type without a hint. E.g., `[&[1], &[1, 2]]` used to be a valid expression of type '[&[int]]'. It no longer type checks since the first element now has type `&[int, ..1]` and the second has type &[int, ..2]` which are incompatible.

3. The type of blocks (including functions) must be coercible to the expected type (used to be a subtype). Mostly this makes things more flexible and not less (in particular, in the case of coercing function bodies to the return type). However, in some rare cases, this is less flexible. TBH, I'm not exactly sure of the exact effects. I think the change causes us to resolve inferred type variables slightly earlier which might make us slightly more restrictive. Possibly it only affects blocks with unreachable code. E.g., `if ... { fail!(); "Hello" }` used to type check, it no longer does. The fix is to add a semicolon after the string.

c3ce245ba6 quote_expr macro: embed Ident using special encoding that preserves hygiene.
This adds support to `quote_expr!` and friends for round-trip hygienic
preservation of Ident.

Here are the pieces of the puzzle:

* adding a method for encoding Ident for re-reading into token tree.

* Support for reading such encoded Idents in the lexer. Note that one
  must peek ahead for MOD_SEP after scan_embedded_hygienic_ident.

* To ensure that encoded Idents are only read when we are in the midst
  of expanding a `quote_expr` or similar, added a
  `read_embedded_ident` flag on `StringReader`.

* pprust support for encoding Ident's as (uint,uint) pairs (for hygiene).

0dc215741b Fixes missing overflow lint for i64 #14269
The `type_overflow` lint, doesn't catch the overflow for `i64` because
the overflow happens earlier in the parse phase when the `u64` as biggest
possible int gets casted to `i64` , without checking the for overflows.
We can't lint in the parse phase, so a refactoring of the `LitInt` type
was necessary.

The types `LitInt`, `LitUint` and `LitIntUnsuffixed` where merged to one
type `LitInt` which stores it's value as `u64`. An additional parameter was
added which indicate the signedness of the type and the sign of the value.

e38cb972dc Simplify PatIdent to contain an Ident rather than a Path
Rationale: for what appear to be historical reasons only, the PatIdent contains
a Path rather than an Ident. This means that there are many places in the code
where an ident is artificially promoted to a path, and---much more problematically---
a bunch of elements from a path are simply thrown away, which seems like an invitation
to some really nasty bugs.

This commit replaces the Path in a PatIdent with a SpannedIdent, which just contains an ident
and a span.

8a8e497ae7 Handle CRLF properly in the lexer
The lexer already ignores CRLF in between tokens, but it doesn't
properly handle carriage returns inside strings and doc comments. Teach
it to treat CRLF as LF inside these tokens, and to disallow carriage
returns that are not followed by linefeeds. This includes handling an
escaped CRLF inside a regular string token the same way it handles an
escaped LF.

This is technically a breaking change, as bare carriage returns are no
longer allowed, and CRLF sequences are now treated as LF inside strings
and doc comments, but it's very unlikely to actually affect any
real-world code.

This change is necessary to have Rust code compile on Windows the same
way it does on Unix. The mozilla/rust repository explicitly sets eol=lf
for Rust source files, but other Rust repositories don't. Notably,
rust-http cannot be compiled on Windows without converting the CRLF line
endings back to LF.

4e9e091e91 syntax: Tighten search paths for inner modules
This is an implementation of RFC 16. A module can now only be loaded if the
module declaring `mod name;` "owns" the current directory. A module is
considered as owning its directory if it meets one of the following criteria:

* It is the top-level crate file
* It is a `mod.rs` file
* It was loaded via `#[path]`
* It was loaded via `include!`
* The module was declared via an inline `mod foo { ... }` statement

For example, this directory structure is now invalid

    // lib.rs
    mod foo;

    // foo.rs
    mod bar;

    // bar.rs;
    fn bar() {}

With this change `foo.rs` must be renamed to `foo/mod.rs`, and `bar.rs` must be
renamed to `foo/bar.rs`. This makes it clear that `bar` is a submodule of `foo`,
and can only be accessed through `foo`.
