There is a dead code in libsyntax/parser/parse.rs, when parsing structs.
Two functions are involved:
* [parse_item_struct](cd9c9f048f/src/libsyntax/parse/parser.rs (L4691))
* [parse_tuple_struct_body](cd9c9f048f/src/libsyntax/parse/parser.rs (L4769))
The problem is that both functions handle the case with unit structs. But because
`parse_tuple_struct_body` is called from `parse_item_struct`, it never faces
this case.
This PR removes unit struct case from `parse_tuple_struct_body` function. I tested with `make -j8 check-statge1`.
Both `parse_tuple_struct_body` and `parse_item_struct` handled the case
of unit like struct. The redundancy is removed,
`parse_tuple_struct_body` now handles only real tuple structs.
`LocalSource` indicated wether a let binding originated from for-loop desugaring to enable specialized error messages, but for-loop expansion has changed and this is now achieved through `MatchSource::ForLoopDesugar`.
Macro desugaring of `in PLACE { BLOCK }` into "simpler" expressions following the in-development "Placer" protocol.
Includes Placer API that one can override to integrate support for `in` into one's own type. (See [RFC 809].)

Turns on the `in PLACE { BLOCK }` syntax, while leaving in support for the old `box (PLACE) EXPR` syntax (since we need to support that at least until we have a snapshot with support for `in PLACE { BLOCK }`.
(Note that we are not 100% committed to the `in PLACE { BLOCK }` syntax. In particular I still want to play around with some other alternatives. Still, I want to get the fundamental framework for the protocol landed so we can play with implementing it for non `Box` types.)

Also, this PR leaves out support for desugaring-based `box EXPR`. We will hopefully land that in the future, but for the short term there are type-inference issues injected by that change that we want to resolve separately.

This allows compiling entire crates from memory or preprocessing source files before they are tokenized.
Minor API refactoring included, which is a [breaking-change] for libsyntax users:
* `ParseSess::{next_node_id, reserve_node_ids}` moved to rustc's `Session`
* `new_parse_sess` -> `ParseSess::new`
* `new_parse_sess_special_handler` -> `ParseSess::with_span_handler`
* `mk_span_handler` -> `SpanHandler::new`
* `default_handler` -> `Handler::new`
* `mk_handler` -> `Handler::with_emitter`
* `string_to_filemap(sess source, path)` -> `sess.codemap().new_filemap(path, source)`
It is currently broken to use syntax such as `<T as Foo>::U::static_method()` where `<T as Foo>::U` is an associated type. I was able to fix this and simplify the parser a bit at the same time.
This also fixes the corresponding issue with associated types (#22139), but that's somewhat irrelevant because #22519 is still open, so this syntax still causes an error in type checking.
Similarly, although this fix applies to associated consts, #25046 forbids associated constants from using type parameters or `Self`, while #19559 means that associated types have to always have one of those two. Therefore, I think that you can't use an associated const from an associated type anyway.
Hi! While researching stuff for the reference and the grammar, I came across a few mentions of using the `priv` keyword that was removed in 0.11.0 (#13547, #8122, rust-lang/rfcs#26, [RFC 0026](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/blob/master/text/0026-remove-priv.md)).
One occurrence is a mention in the reference, a few are in comments, and a few are marking test functions. I left the test that makes sure you can't name an ident `priv` since it's still a reserved keyword. I did a little grepping around for `priv `, priv in backticks, `Private` etc and I think the remaining instances are fine, but if anyone knows anywhere in particular I should check for any other lingering mentions of `priv`, please let me know and I would be happy to! 🍂🌊

The majority of the work should be done, e.g. trait and inherent impls, different forms of UFCS syntax, defaults, and cross-crate usage. It's probably enough to replace the constants in `f32`, `i8`, and so on, or close to good enough.
There is still some significant functionality missing from this commit:
- ~~Associated consts can't be used in match patterns at all. This is simply because I haven't updated the relevant bits in the parser or `resolve`, but it's *probably* not hard to get working.~~
- Since you can't select an impl for trait-associated consts until partway through type-checking, there are some problems with code that assumes that you can check constants earlier. Associated consts that are not in inherent impls cause ICEs if you try to use them in array sizes or match ranges. For similar reasons, `check_static_recursion` doesn't check them properly, so the stack goes ka-blooey if you use an associated constant that's recursively defined. That's a bit trickier to solve; I'm not entirely sure what the best approach is yet.
- Dealing with consts associated with type parameters will raise some new issues (e.g. if you have a `T: Int` type parameter and want to use `<T>::ZERO`). See rust-lang/rfcs#865.
- ~~Unused associated consts don't seem to trigger the `dead_code` lint when they should. Probably easy to fix.~~
Also, this is the first time I've been spelunking in rustc to such a large extent, so I've probably done some silly things in a couple of places.
This changes the `ToTokens` implementations for expressions, statements,
etc. with almost-trivial ones that produce `Interpolated(*Nt(...))`
pseudo-tokens. In this way, quasiquote now works the same way as macros
do: already-parsed AST fragments are used as-is, not reparsed.
The `ToSource` trait is removed. Quasiquote no longer involves
pretty-printing at all, which removes the need for the
`encode_with_hygiene` hack. All associated machinery is removed.
A new `Nonterminal` is added, NtArm, which the parser now interpolates.
This is just for quasiquote, not macros (although it could be in the
future).
`ToTokens` is no longer implemented for `Arg` (although this could be
added again) and `Generics` (which I don't think makes sense).
This breaks any compiler extensions that relied on the ability of
`ToTokens` to turn AST fragments back into inspectable token trees. For
this reason, this closes#16987.
As such, this is a [breaking-change].

- 'panictry!' macro added as scaffolding while converting panicing functions.

- Leaves panicing wrappers for the following functions so that the
quote_* macros behave the same:

This commit removes parser support for `extern crate "foo" as bar` as the
renamed crate is now required to be an identifier. Additionally this commit
enables hard errors on crate names that contain hyphens in them, they must now
solely contain alphanumeric characters or underscores.
If the crate name is inferred from the file name, however, the file name
`foo-bar.rs` will have the crate name inferred as `foo_bar`. If a binary is
being emitted it will have the name `foo-bar` and a library will have the name
`libfoo_bar.rlib`.
This commit is a breaking change for a number of reasons:
* Old syntax is being removed. This was previously only issuing warnings.
* The output for the compiler when input is received on stdin is now `rust_out`
instead of `rust-out`.
* The crate name for a crate in the file `foo-bar.rs` is now `foo_bar` which can
affect infrastructure such as logging.

This permits all coercions to be performed in casts, but adds lints to warn in those cases.
Part of this patch moves cast checking to a later stage of type checking. We acquire obligations to check casts as part of type checking where we previously checked them. Once we have type checked a function or module, then we check any cast obligations which have been acquired. That means we have more type information available to check casts (this was crucial to making coercions work properly in place of some casts), but it means that casts cannot feed input into type inference.

* Adds two new lints for trivial casts and trivial numeric casts, these are warn by default, but can cause errors if you build with warnings as errors. Previously, trivial numeric casts and casts to trait objects were allowed.
* The unused casts lint has gone.
* Interactions between casting and type inference have changed in subtle ways. Two ways this might manifest are:
- You may need to 'direct' casts more with extra type information, for example, in some cases where `foo as _ as T` succeeded, you may now need to specify the type for `_`
- Casts do not influence inference of integer types. E.g., the following used to type check:

let y = &x as *const u32;
```
Because the cast would inform inference that `x` must have type `u32`. This no longer applies and the compiler will fallback to `i32` for `x` and thus there will be a type error in the cast. The solution is to add more type information:

let x: u32 = 42;
let y = &x as *const u32;
```
This commit:
* Introduces `std::convert`, providing an implementation of
RFC 529.
* Deprecates the `AsPath`, `AsOsStr`, and `IntoBytes` traits, all
in favor of the corresponding generic conversion traits.
Consequently, various IO APIs now take `AsRef<Path>` rather than
`AsPath`, and so on. Since the types provided by `std` implement both
traits, this should cause relatively little breakage.
* Deprecates many `from_foo` constructors in favor of `from`.
* Changes `PathBuf::new` to take no argument (creating an empty buffer,
as per convention). The previous behavior is now available as
`PathBuf::from`.
* De-stabilizes `IntoCow`. It's not clear whether we need this separate trait.

This commit deprecates the `count`, `range` and `range_step` functions
in `iter`, in favor of range notation. To recover all existing
functionality, a new `step_by` adapter is provided directly on `ops::Range`
and `ops::RangeFrom`.

The end result is that common fields (id, name, attributes, etc.) are stored in now-structures `ImplItem` and `TraitItem`.
The signature of a method is no longer duplicated between methods with a body (default/impl) and those without, they now share `MethodSig`.
This is also a [breaking-change] because of minor bugfixes and changes to syntax extensions:
* `pub fn` methods in a trait no longer parse - remove the `pub`, it has no meaning anymore
* `MacResult::make_methods` is now `make_impl_items` and the return type has changed accordingly
* `quote_method` is gone, because `P<ast::Method>` doesn't exist and it couldn't represent a full method anyways - could be replaced by `quote_impl_item`/`quote_trait_item` in the future, but I do hope we realize how silly that combinatorial macro expansion is and settle on a single `quote` macro + some type hints - or just no types at all (only token-trees)

This commit deprecates the majority of std::old_io::fs in favor of std::fs and
its new functionality. Some functions remain non-deprecated but are now behind a
feature gate called `old_fs`. These functions will be deprecated once
suitable replacements have been implemented.
The compiler has been migrated to new `std::fs` and `std::path` APIs where
appropriate as part of this change.
Fixing #21475. Right now this code can not be parsed:

I fixed the parser and added test for this case, but now there are still problems with mixing literals and paths in interval:

This is one more step towards completing #13231
This series of commits add support for default trait implementations. The changes in this PR don't break existing code and they are expected to preserve the existing behavior in the compiler as far as built-in bounds checks go.
The PR adds negative implementations of `Send`/`Sync` for some types and it removes the special cases for `Send`/`Sync` during the trait obligations checks. That is, it now fully relies on the traits check rather than lang items.
Once this patch lands and a new snapshot is created, it'll be possible to add default impls for `Send` and `Sync` and remove entirely the use of `BuiltinBound::{BoundSend,BoundSync}` for positive implementations as well.
This PR also removes the restriction on negative implementations. That is, it is now possible to add negative implementations for traits other than `Send`/`Sync`
This is not a complete implementation of the RFC:
- only existing methods got updated, no new ones added
- doc comments are not extensive enough yet
- optimizations got lost and need to be reimplemented

upgrade the inference based on expected type so that it is able to
infer the fn kind in isolation even if the full signature is not
available (and we could perhaps do better still in some cases, such as
extracting just the types of the arguments but not the return value).
This commits adds an associated type to the `FromStr` trait representing an
error payload for parses which do not succeed. The previous return value,
`Option<Self>` did not allow for this form of payload. After the associated type
was added, the following attributes were applied:
* `FromStr` is now stable
* `FromStr::Err` is now stable
* `FromStr::from_str` is now stable
* `StrExt::parse` is now stable
* `FromStr for bool` is now stable

Closes#21033. The new strategy for parsing a field pattern is to look 1 token ahead and if it's a colon, parse as "fieldname: pat", otherwise parse the shorthand form "(box) (ref) (mut) fieldname)". The previous strategy was to parse "(ref) (mut) fieldname" then if we encounter a colon, throw an error if either "ref" or "mut" were encountered.
* add `Token::AndAnd` (double borrow)
* add `Token::DotDot` (range notation)
* remove `Token::Pound` and `Token::At`
This fixes a syntax error when parsing `fn f() -> RangeTo<i32> { return ..1; }`.
Also, remove `fn_expr_lookahead`.
It's from the `fn~` days and seems to no longer be necessary.
