d5ec9b458a Remove MetaItemKind::value_str.
`MetaItem::value_str` is good enough. And this makes
`MetaItem::value_str` more like `MetaItem::meta_item_list` and
`name_value_literal`.

Implement syntax for `impl Trait` to specify its captures explicitly (`feature(precise_capturing)`)

Implements `impl use<'a, 'b, T, U> Sized` syntax that allows users to explicitly list the captured parameters for an opaque, rather than inferring it from the opaque's bounds (or capturing *all* lifetimes under 2024-edition capture rules). This allows us to exclude some implicit captures, so this syntax may be used as a migration strategy for changes due to #117587.

We represent this list of captured params as `PreciseCapturingArg` in AST and HIR, resolving them between `rustc_resolve` and `resolve_bound_vars`. Later on, we validate that the opaques only capture the parameters in this list.

We artificially limit the feature to *require* mentioning all type and const parameters, since we don't currently have support for non-lifetime bivariant generics. This can be relaxed in the future.

We also may need to limit this to require naming *all* lifetime parameters for RPITIT, since GATs have no variance. I have to investigate this. This can also be relaxed in the future.

Rollup merge of #123462 - fmease:rn-mod-sep-to-path-sep, r=nnethercote
Cleanup: Rename `ModSep` to `PathSep`

`::` is usually referred to as the *path separator* (citation needed).

The existing name `ModSep` for *module separator* is a bit misleading since it in fact separates the segments of arbitrary path segments, not only ones resolving to modules. Let me just give a shout-out to associated items (`T::Assoc`, `<Ty as Trait>::function`) and enum variants (`Option::None`).

Motivation: Reduce friction for new contributors, prevent potential confusion.

Rollup merge of #123401 - Zalathar:assert-size-aarch64, r=fmease
Check `x86_64` size assertions on `aarch64`, too

(Context: https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/131828-t-compiler/topic/Checking.20size.20assertions.20on.20aarch64.3F)

Currently the compiler has around 30 sets of `static_assert_size!` for various size-critical data structures (e.g. various IR nodes), guarded by `#[cfg(all(target_arch = "x86_64", target_pointer_width = "64"))]`.

(Presumably this cfg avoids having to maintain separate size values for 32-bit targets and unusual 64-bit targets. Apparently it may have been necessary before the i128/u128 alignment changes, too.)

This is slightly incovenient for people on aarch64 workstations (e.g. Macs), because the assertions normally aren't checked until we push to a PR. So this PR adds `aarch64` to the `#[cfg(..)]` guarding all of those assertions in the compiler.

---

Implemented with a simple find/replace. Verified by manually inspecting each `static_assert_size!` in `compiler/`, and checking that either the replacement succeeded, or adding aarch64 wouldn't have been appropriate.

These affect diagnostics only, as far as I can tell. I'm too lazy to come up with UI tests, but I could be convinced otherwise.

Specifically, I think changing the precedence computation actually doesn't change anything, but tweaking `contains_exterior_struct_lit` does mean that some diagnostics will begin parenthesizing `S {}.match {}`.

Experimental feature postfix match

This has a basic experimental implementation for the RFC postfix match (rust-lang/rfcs#3295, #121618). [Liaison is](https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/213817-t-lang/topic/Postfix.20Match.20Liaison/near/423301844) ```@scottmcm``` with the lang team's [experimental feature gate process](https://github.com/rust-lang/lang-team/blob/master/src/how_to/experiment.md).

This feature has had an RFC for a while, and there has been discussion on it for a while. It would probably be valuable to see it out in the field rather than continue discussing it. This feature also allows to see how popular postfix expressions like this are for the postfix macros RFC, as those will take more time to implement.

It is entirely implemented in the parser, so it should be relatively easy to remove if needed.

This PR is split in to 5 commits to ease review.

1. The implementation of the feature & gating.
2. Add a MatchKind field, fix uses, fix pretty.
3. Basic rustfmt impl, as rustfmt crashes upon seeing this syntax without a fix.
4. Add new MatchSource to HIR for Clippy & other HIR consumers

We need to keep the order of the given clippy lint rules before passing them.
Since clap doesn't offer any useful interface for this purpose out of the box,
we have to handle it manually.

Additionally, this PR makes `-D` rules work as expected. Previously, lint rules were limited to `-W`. By enabling `-D`, clippy began to complain numerous lines in the tree, all of which have been resolved in this PR as well.

Stabilize associated type bounds (RFC 2289)

This PR stabilizes associated type bounds, which were laid out in [RFC 2289]. This gives us a shorthand to express nested type bounds that would otherwise need to be expressed with nested `impl Trait` or broken into several `where` clauses.

### What are we stabilizing?

We're stabilizing the associated item bounds syntax, which allows us to put bounds in associated type position within other bounds, i.e. `T: Trait<Assoc: Bounds...>`. See [RFC 2289] for motivation.

In all position, the associated type bound syntax expands into a set of two (or more) bounds, and never anything else (see "How does this differ[...]" section for more info).

Associated type bounds are stabilized in four positions:
* **`where` clauses (and APIT)** - This is equivalent to breaking up the bound into two (or more) `where` clauses. For example, `where T: Trait<Assoc: Bound>` is equivalent to `where T: Trait, <T as Trait>::Assoc: Bound`.
* **Supertraits** - Similar to above, `trait CopyIterator: Iterator<Item: Copy> {}`. This is almost equivalent to breaking up the bound into two (or more) `where` clauses; however, the bound on the associated item is implied whenever the trait is used. See #112573/#112629.
* **Associated type item bounds** - This allows constraining the *nested* rigid projections that are associated with a trait's associated types. e.g. `trait Trait { type Assoc: Trait2<Assoc2: Copy>; }`.
* **opaque item bounds (RPIT, TAIT)** - This allows constraining associated types that are associated with the opaque without having to *name* the opaque. For example, `impl Iterator<Item: Copy>` defines an iterator whose item is `Copy` without having to actually name that item bound.

The latter three are not expressible in surface Rust (though for associated type item bounds, this will change in #120752, which I don't believe should block this PR), so this does represent a slight expansion of what can be expressed in trait bounds.

### How does this differ from the RFC?

Compared to the RFC, the current implementation *always* desugars associated type bounds to sets of `ty::Clause`s internally. Specifically, it does *not* introduce a position-dependent desugaring as laid out in [RFC 2289], and in particular:
* It does *not* desugar to anonymous associated items in associated type item bounds.
* It does *not* desugar to nested RPITs in RPIT bounds, nor nested TAITs in TAIT bounds.

This position-dependent desugaring laid out in the RFC existed simply to side-step limitations of the trait solver, which have mostly been fixed in #120584. The desugaring laid out in the RFC also added unnecessary complication to the design of the feature, and introduces its own limitations to, for example:
* Conditionally lowering to nested `impl Trait` in certain positions such as RPIT and TAIT means that we inherit the limitations of RPIT/TAIT, namely lack of support for higher-ranked opaque inference. See this code example: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/120752#issuecomment-1979412531.
* Introducing anonymous associated types makes traits no longer object safe, since anonymous associated types are not nameable, and all associated types must be named in `dyn` types.

This last point motivates why this PR is *not* stabilizing support for associated type bounds in `dyn` types, e.g, `dyn Assoc<Item: Bound>`. Why? Because `dyn` types need to have *concrete* types for all associated items, this would necessitate a distinct lowering for associated type bounds, which seems both complicated and unnecessary compared to just requiring the user to write `impl Trait` themselves. See #120719.

`f16` and `f128` step 3: compiler support & feature gate

Continuation of https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/121841, another portion of https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/114607

This PR exposes the new types to the world and adds a feature gate. Marking this as a draft because I need some feedback on where I did the feature gate check. It also does not yet catch type via suffixed literals (so the feature gate test will fail, probably some others too because I haven't belssed).

If there is a better place to check all types after resolution, I can do that. If not, I figure maybe I can add a second gate location in AST when it checks numeric suffixes.

Unfortunately I still don't think there is much testing to be done for correctness (codegen tests or parsed value checks) until we have basic library support. I think that will be the next step.

This PR implements asm-goto support, using the syntax described in "future possibilities" section of [RFC2873](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/2873-inline-asm.html#asm-goto).

Currently I have only implemented the `label` part, not the `fallthrough` part (i.e. fallthrough is implicit). This doesn't reduce the expressive though, since you can use label-break to get arbitrary control flow or simply set a value and rely on jump threading optimisation to get the desired control flow. I can add that later if deemed necessary.

Detect `NulInCStr` error earlier.

By making it an `EscapeError` instead of a `LitError`. This makes it like the other errors produced when checking string literals contents, e.g. for invalid escape sequences or bare CR chars.

NOTE: this means these errors are issued earlier, before expansion, which changes behaviour. It will be possible to move the check back to the later point if desired. If that happens, it's likely that all the string literal contents checks will be delayed together.

One nice thing about this: the old approach had some code in `report_lit_error` to calculate the span of the nul char from a range. This code used a hardwired `+2` to account for the `c"` at the start of a C string literal, but this should have changed to a `+3` for raw C string literals to account for the `cr"`, which meant that the caret in `cr"` nul error messages was one short of where it should have been. The new approach doesn't need any of this and avoids the off-by-one error.

With the exception of a perf-only specialization for byte slices and byte vectors.

This uses the same trick of introducing a new trait and having the Encodable and Decodable derives add a bound to it as used for TyEncoder/TyDecoder. The new code is clearer about which encoder/decoder uses which impl and it reduces the dependency of rustc on specialization, making it easier to remove support for specialization entirely or turn it into a construct that is only allowed for perf optimizations if we decide to do this.

This involves lots of breaking changes. There are two big changes that

Additionally, bitflags now have a hidden inner type by default, which
breaks our custom derives. The bitflags docs recommend using the impl

208dd2032b Auto merge of #118847 - eholk:for-await, r=compiler-errors
Add support for `for await` loops

This adds support for `for await` loops. This includes parsing, desugaring in AST->HIR lowering, and adding some support functions to the library.

Given a loop like:
```rust
for await i in iter {
    ...
}
```
this is desugared to something like:
```rust
let mut iter = iter.into_async_iter();
while let Some(i) = loop {
    match core::pin::Pin::new(&mut iter).poll_next(cx) {
        Poll::Ready(i) => break i,
        Poll::Pending => yield,
    }
} {
    ...
}
```

This PR also adds a basic `IntoAsyncIterator` trait. This is partly for symmetry with the way `Iterator` and `IntoIterator` work. The other reason is that for async iterators it's helpful to have a place apart from the data structure being iterated over to store state. `IntoAsyncIterator` gives us a good place to do this.

I've gated this feature behind `async_for_loop` and opened #118898 as the feature tracking issue.

Refactor AST trait bound modifiers

Instead of having two types to represent trait bound modifiers in the parser / the AST (`parser::ty::BoundModifiers` & `ast::TraitBoundModifier`), only to map one to the other later, just use `parser::ty::BoundModifiers` (moved & renamed to `ast::TraitBoundModifiers`).

The struct type is more extensible and easier to deal with (see [here](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/119099/files#r1430749981) and [here](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/119099/files#r1430752116) for context) since it more closely models what it represents: A compound of two kinds of modifiers, constness and polarity. Modeling this as an enum (the now removed `ast::TraitBoundModifier`) meant one had to add a new variant per *combination* of modifier kind, which simply isn't scalable and which lead to a lot of explicit non-DRY matches.

NB: `hir::TraitBoundModifier` being an enum is fine since HIR doesn't need to worry representing invalid modifier kind combinations as those get rejected during AST validation thereby immensely cutting down the number of possibilities.

Raw strings don't have escape sequences, so for them "unescaping" just
means checking for invalid chars like bare CR. Which means there is no
need to rebuild them one char or byte at a time while escaping, because

rebuilding.

Also, the commit changes things so that "unescaping" is unconditional for

925f7fad57 Improve print_tts by changing tokenstream::Spacing.
`tokenstream::Spacing` appears on all `TokenTree::Token` instances,
both punct and non-punct. Its current usage:
- `Joint` means "can join with the next token *and* that token is a
  punct".
- `Alone` means "cannot join with the next token *or* can join with the
  next token but that token is not a punct".

The fact that `Alone` is used for two different cases is awkward.
This commit augments `tokenstream::Spacing` with a new variant
`JointHidden`, resulting in:
- `Joint` means "can join with the next token *and* that token is a
  punct".
- `JointHidden` means "can join with the next token *and* that token is a
  not a punct".
- `Alone` means "cannot join with the next token".

This *drastically* improves the output of `print_tts`. For example,
this:
```
stringify!(let a: Vec<u32> = vec![];)
```
currently produces this string:
```
let a : Vec < u32 > = vec! [] ;
```
With this PR, it now produces this string:
```
let a: Vec<u32> = vec![] ;
```
(The space after the `]` is because `TokenTree::Delimited` currently
doesn't have spacing information. The subsequent commit fixes this.)

The new `print_tts` doesn't replicate original code perfectly. E.g.
multiple space characters will be condensed into a single space
character. But it's much improved.

`print_tts` still produces the old, uglier output for code produced by
proc macros. Because we have to translate the generated code from
`proc_macro::Spacing` to the more expressive `token::Spacing`, which
results in too much `proc_macro::Along` usage and no
`proc_macro::JointHidden` usage. So `space_between` still exists and
is used by `print_tts` in conjunction with the `Spacing` field.

This change will also help with the removal of `Token::Interpolated`.
Currently interpolated tokens are pretty-printed nicely via AST pretty
printing. `Token::Interpolated` removal will mean they get printed with
`print_tts`. Without this change, that would result in much uglier
output for code produced by decl macro expansions. With this change, AST
pretty printing and `print_tts` produce similar results.

The commit also tweaks the comments on `proc_macro::Spacing`. In
particular, it refers to "compound tokens" rather than "multi-char
operators" because lifetimes aren't operators.

Introduce support for `async gen` blocks

I'm delighted to demonstrate that `async gen` block are not very difficult to support. They're simply coroutines that yield `Poll<Option<T>>` and return `()`.

**This PR is WIP and in draft mode for now** -- I'm mostly putting it up to show folks that it's possible. This PR needs a lang-team experiment associated with it or possible an RFC, since I don't think it falls under the jurisdiction of the `gen` RFC that was recently authored by oli (https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/3513, https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/117078).

### Technical note on the pre-generator-transform yield type:

The reason that the underlying coroutines yield `Poll<Option<T>>` and not `Poll<T>` (which would make more sense, IMO, for the pre-transformed coroutine), is because the `TransformVisitor` that is used to turn coroutines into built-in state machine functions would have to destructure and reconstruct the latter into the former, which requires at least inserting a new basic block (for a `switchInt` terminator, to match on the `Poll` discriminant).

This does mean that the desugaring (at the `rustc_ast_lowering` level) of `async gen` blocks is a bit more involved. However, since we already need to intercept both `.await` and `yield` operators, I don't consider it much of a technical burden.

never_patterns: Parse match arms with no body

Never patterns are meant to signal unreachable cases, and thus don't take bodies:
```rust
let ptr: *const Option<!> = ...;
match *ptr {
    None => { foo(); }
    Some(!),
}
```
This PR makes rustc accept the above, and enforces that an arm has a body xor is a never pattern. This affects parsing of match arms even with the feature off, so this is delicate. (Plus this is my first non-trivial change to the parser).

~~The last commit is optional; it introduces a bit of churn to allow the new suggestions to be machine-applicable. There may be a better solution? I'm not sure.~~ EDIT: I removed that commit

They're identical to the same-named types from `ast`. I find it silly
(and inefficient) to have all this boilerplate code to convert one type
to an identical type.

There is already a small amount of type sharing between the AST and HIR,
e.g. `Attribute`, `MacroDef`.

The commit adds a `pub use` to `rustc_hir` so that, for example,
`ast::BinOp` can also be referred to as `hir::BinOp`. This is so the
many existing `hir`-qualified mentions of these types don't need to
change.

The commit also moves a couple of operations from the (removed) HIR
types to the AST types, e.g. `is_by_value`.

3ef9d4d0ed Replace custom_encodable with encodable.
By default, `newtype_index!` types get a default `Encodable`/`Decodable`
impl. You can opt out of this with `custom_encodable`. Opting out is the
opposite to how Rust normally works with autogenerated (derived) impls.

This commit inverts the behaviour, replacing `custom_encodable` with
`encodable` which opts into the default `Encodable`/`Decodable` impl.
Only 23 of the 59 `newtype_index!` occurrences need `encodable`.

Even better, there were eight crates with a dependency on
`rustc_serialize` just from unused default `Encodable`/`Decodable`
impls. This commit removes that dependency from those eight crates.

`gen` block tracking issue https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/117078

This PR implements `gen` blocks that implement `Iterator`. Most of the logic with `async` blocks is shared, and thus I renamed various types that were referring to `async` specifically.

An example usage of `gen` blocks is

```rust
fn foo() -> impl Iterator<Item = i32> {
    gen {
        yield 42;
        for i in 5..18 {
            if i.is_even() { continue }
            yield i * 2;
        }
    }
}
```

Format all the let-chains in compiler crates

Since rust-lang/rustfmt#5910 has landed, soon we will have support for formatting let-chains (as soon as rustfmt syncs and beta gets bumped).

This PR applies the changes [from master rustfmt to rust-lang/rust eagerly](https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/122651-general/topic/out.20formatting.20of.20prs/near/374997516), so that the next beta bump does not have to deal with a 200+ file diff and can remain concerned with other things like `cfg(bootstrap)` -- #113637 was a pain to land, for example, because of let-else.

I will also add this commit to the ignore list after it has landed.

The commands that were run -- I'm not great at bash-foo, but this applies rustfmt to every compiler crate, and then reverts the two crates that should probably be formatted out-of-tree.
```
~/rustfmt $ ls -1d ~/rust/compiler/* | xargs -I@ cargo run --bin rustfmt -- `@/src/lib.rs` --config-path ~/rust --edition=2021 # format all of the compiler crates
~/rust $ git checkout HEAD -- compiler/rustc_codegen_{gcc,cranelift} # revert changes to cg-gcc and cg-clif
I think the situation has changed since then, given that let-chains support exists on master rustfmt now, and I'm fairly confident that this formatting PR should land even if *bootstrap* rustfmt doesn't yet format let-chains in order to lessen the burden of the next beta bump.
333388fd3c Move let expression checking to parsing
There was an incomplete version of the check in parsing and a second
version in AST validation. This meant that some, but not all, invalid
passes have a hard time knowing when the let expression is in a valid
location, sometimes causing ICEs.
- Add a field to ExprKind::Let in AST/HIR to mark whether it's in a
  valid location.
- Suppress later errors and MIR construction for invalid let
Indexing is similar to method calls in having an arbitrary
left-hand-side and then something on the right, which is the main part
of the expression. Method calls already have a span for that right part,
but indexing does not. This means that long method chains that use
indexing have really bad spans, especially when the indexing panics and
that span in coverted into a panic location.
This does the same thing as method calls for the AST and HIR, storing an
extra span which is then put into the `fn_span` field in THIR.
generally in favour of using types to make impossible states
Look at the change in `src/tools/rustfmt/src/expr.rs` for an example:
the old code converted from `MacDelimiter` to `Delimiter` and back
again, for no good reason. This suggests the author was confused about
the types.
separation of desugaring and iterating makes the code nicer.
a647ba250a Remember names of cfg-ed out items to mention them in diagnostics
`#[cfg]`s are frequently used to gate crate content behind cargo
features. This can lead to very confusing errors when features are
missing. For example, `serde` doesn't have the `derive` feature by
default. Therefore, `serde::Serialize` fails to resolve with a generic
error, even though the macro is present in the docs.
This commit adds a list of all stripped item names to metadata. This is
filled during macro expansion and then, through a fed query, persisted
in metadata. The downstream resolver can then access the metadata to
look at possible candidates for mentioning in the errors.
This slightly increases metadata (800k->809k for the feature-heavy
windows crate), but not enough to really matter.
Support #[global_allocator] without the allocator shim
This makes it possible to use liballoc/libstd in combination with `--emit obj` if you use `#[global_allocator]`. This is what rust-for-linux uses right now and systemd may use in the future. Currently they have to depend on the exact implementation of the allocator shim to create one themself as `--emit obj` doesn't create an allocator shim.
Note that currently the allocator shim also defines the oom error handler, which is normally required too. Once `#![feature(default_alloc_error_handler)]` becomes the only option, this can be avoided. In addition when using only fallible allocator methods and either `--cfg no_global_oom_handling` for liballoc (like rust-for-linux) or `--gc-sections` no references to the oom error handler will exist.
To avoid this feature being insta-stable, you will have to define `__rust_no_alloc_shim_is_unstable` to avoid linker errors.
(Labeling this with both T-compiler and T-lang as it originally involved both an implementation detail and had an insta-stable user facing change. As noted above, the `__rust_no_alloc_shim_is_unstable` symbol requirement should prevent unintended dependence on this unstable feature.)
Introduce `DynSend` and `DynSync` auto trait for parallel compiler
part of parallel-rustc #101566
This PR introduces `DynSend / DynSync` trait and `FromDyn / IntoDyn` structure in rustc_data_structure::marker. `FromDyn` can dynamically check data structures for thread safety when switching to parallel environments (such as calling `par_for_each_in`). This happens only when `-Z threads > 1` so it doesn't affect single-threaded mode's compile efficiency.
Rollup merge of #111215 - BoxyUwU:resolve_anon_consts_differently, r=cjgillot
Various changes to name resolution of anon consts
Sorry this PR is kind of all over the place ^^'
Fixes #111012
- Rewrites anon const nameres to all go through `fn resolve_anon_const` explicitly instead of `visit_anon_const` to ensure that we do not accidentally resolve anon consts as if they are allowed to use generics when they aren't. Also means that we dont have bits of code for resolving anon consts that will get out of sync (i.e. legacy const generics and resolving path consts that were parsed as type arguments)
- Renames two of the `LifetimeRibKind`, `AnonConst -> ConcreteAnonConst` and `ConstGeneric -> ConstParamTy`
- Noticed while doing this that under `generic_const_exprs` all lifetimes currently get resolved to errors without any error being emitted which was causing a bunch of tests to pass without their bugs having been fixed, incidentally fixed that in this PR and marked those tests as `// known-bug:`. I'm fine to break those since `generic_const_exprs` is a very unstable incomplete feature and this PR _does_ make generic_const_exprs "less broken" as a whole, also I can't be assed to figure out what the underlying causes of all of them are. This PR reopens #77357 #83993
- Changed `generics_of` to stop providing generics and predicates to enum variant discriminant anon consts since those are not allowed to use generic parameters
- Updated the error for non 'static lifetime in const arguments and the error for non 'static lifetime in const param tys to use `derive(Diagnostic)`
I have a vague idea why const-arg-in-const-arg.rs, in-closure.rs and simple.rs have started failing which is unfortunate since these were deliberately made to work, I think lifetime resolution being broken just means this regressed at some point and nobody noticed because the tests were not testing anything :( I'm fine breaking these too for the same reason as the tests for #77357 #83993. I couldn't get `// known-bug` to work for these ICEs and just kept getting different stderr between CI and local `--bless` so I just removed them and will create an issue to track re-adding (and fixing) the bugs if this PR lands.
Move the WorkerLocal type from the rustc-rayon fork into rustc_data_structures
This PR moves the definition of the `WorkerLocal` type from `rustc-rayon` into `rustc_data_structures`. This is enabled by the introduction of the `Registry` type which allows you to group up threads to be used by `WorkerLocal` which is basically just an array with an per thread index. The `Registry` type mirrors the one in Rayon and each Rayon worker thread is also registered with the new `Registry`. Safety for `WorkerLocal` is ensured by having it keep a reference to the registry and checking on each access that we're still on the group of threads associated with the registry used to construct it.
Accessing a `WorkerLocal` is micro-optimized due to it being hot since it's used for most arena allocations.
Performance is slightly improved for the parallel compiler:
