//! Traits for dynamic typing of any `'static` type (through runtime reflection)
2013-12-24 16:08:28 +00:00
//!
2013-10-11 21:20:34 +00:00
//! This module implements the `Any` trait, which enables dynamic typing
2014-06-12 07:54:03 +00:00
//! of any `'static` type through runtime reflection.
2013-12-06 17:33:08 +00:00
//!
2014-07-06 16:30:01 +00:00
//! `Any` itself can be used to get a `TypeId`, and has more features when used
//! as a trait object. As `&Any` (a borrowed trait object), it has the `is` and
//! `as_ref` methods, to test if the contained value is of a given type, and to
//! get a reference to the inner value as a type. As`&mut Any`, there is also
//! the `as_mut` method, for getting a mutable reference to the inner value.
//! `Box<Any>` adds the `move` method, which will unwrap a `Box<T>` from the
//! object. See the extension traits (`*Ext`) for the full details.
//!
//! Note that &Any is limited to testing whether a value is of a specified
//! concrete type, and cannot be used to test whether a type implements a trait.
//!
//! # Examples
//!
//! Consider a situation where we want to log out a value passed to a function.
//! We know the value we're working on implements Show, but we don't know its
//! concrete type. We want to give special treatment to certain types: in this
//! case printing out the length of String values prior to their value.
//! We don't know the concrete type of our value at compile time, so we need to
//! use runtime reflection instead.
//!
//! ```rust
//! use std::fmt::Show;
//! use std::any::{Any, AnyRefExt};
//!
//! // Logger function for any type that implements Show.
//! fn log<T: Any+Show>(value: &T) {
//! let value_any = value as &Any;
//!
//! // try to convert our value to a String. If successful, we want to
//! // output the String's length as well as its value. If not, it's a
//! // different type: just print it out unadorned.
//! match value_any.as_ref::<String>() {
//! Some(as_string) => {
//! println!("String ({}): {}", as_string.len(), as_string);
//! }
//! None => {
//! println!("{}", value);
//! }
//! }
//! }
//!
//! // This function wants to log its parameter out prior to doing work with it.

core: Remove the cast module
This commit revisits the `cast` module in libcore and libstd, and scrutinizes
all functions inside of it. The result was to remove the `cast` module entirely,
folding all functionality into the `mem` module. Specifically, this is the fate
of each function in the `cast` module.
* transmute - This function was moved to `mem`, but it is now marked as
#[unstable]. This is due to planned changes to the `transmute`
function and how it can be invoked (see the #[unstable] comment).
For more information, see RFC 5 and #12898
* transmute_copy - This function was moved to `mem`, with clarification that is
is not an error to invoke it with T/U that are different
sizes, but rather that it is strongly discouraged. This
function is now #[stable]
* forget - This function was moved to `mem` and marked #[stable]
* bump_box_refcount - This function was removed due to the deprecation of
managed boxes as well as its questionable utility.
* transmute_mut - This function was previously deprecated, and removed as part
of this commit.
* transmute_mut_unsafe - This function doesn't serve much of a purpose when it
can be achieved with an `as` in safe code, so it was
removed.
* transmute_lifetime - This function was removed because it is likely a strong
indication that code is incorrect in the first place.
* transmute_mut_lifetime - This function was removed for the same reasons as
`transmute_lifetime`
* copy_lifetime - This function was moved to `mem`, but it is marked
`#[unstable]` now due to the likelihood of being removed in
the future if it is found to not be very useful.
* copy_mut_lifetime - This function was also moved to `mem`, but had the same
treatment as `copy_lifetime`.
* copy_lifetime_vec - This function was removed because it is not used today,
and its existence is not necessary with DST
(copy_lifetime will suffice).
In summary, the cast module was stripped down to these functions, and then the
functions were moved to the `mem` module.
transmute - #[unstable]
transmute_copy - #[stable]
forget - #[stable]
copy_lifetime - #[unstable]
copy_mut_lifetime - #[unstable]
