autoPatchelfHook: improve arch/ABI compatibility
Fully enabling crossSystem support for autoPatchelfHook came with some
perhaps unintended consequences of being a bit more aggressive about
patching ELF files from architectures/ABIs that differ from the target
(previously, those files would be ignored because ldd usually couldn't
handle them).

This change adds architecture and rough OS ABI detection to the script
so that it doesn't try to blindly replace the interpreter of files that
can't possibly use that interpreter, and also makes sure it doesn't
accidentally use libraries of other architectures/ABIs.

11fe2fc3cf stdenv: move --enable-deterministic-archives flag into GNU wrapper
`--enable-deterministic-archives` is a GNU specific strip flag and
causes other strip implementations (for example LLVM's, see #138013)
to fail. Since strip failures are ignored, this means that stripping
doesn't work at all in certain situation (causing unnecessary
dependencies etc.).

To fix this, no longer pass `--enable-deterministic-archives`
unconditionally, but instead add it in a GNU binutils specific strip
wrapper only.

`commonStripFlags` was only used for this flag, so we can remove
it altogether.

Future work could be to make a generic strip wrapper, with support for
nix-support/strip-flags-{before,after} and NIX_STRIP_FLAGS_{BEFORE,AFTER}.
This possibly overkill and unnecessary though -- also with the
additional challenge of incorporating the darwin strip wrapper somehow.

autoPatchelfHook: fix detection under crossSystem
In #84415, autoPatchelfHook was taught to use the correct path to the
readelf binary when a crossSystem is specified. Unfortunately, the
remainder of the functionality in the script depended on ldd, which only
reads ELF files of its own architecture. It has the further unfortunate
quality of not reporting any useful error, but rather that the file is
not a dynamic executable.

This change uses patchelf to directly analyze the DT_NEEDED tags in the
target files instead, which correctly works across architectures. It
also updates the use of objdump to be prefix-aware $OBJDUMP (which would
have been required in the PR mentioned above, but we never made it that
far into the script execution).

61a6d1aae2 stdenv: trim random seed to avoid reference cycles
Using the full store hash as the random seed occasionally caused
reference cycles when the invocation was stored in output artifacts.
For example, cross-compiled gcc was failing due to this:
https://hydra.nixos.org/eval/1631713#tabs-now-fail

Simply truncating the hash is sufficient to avoid this.

Use "find -exec" to strip rather than "find … | xargs …". The former
ensures that stripping is attempted for each file, whereas the latter

compress-man-pages: symlink compressed manpages deterministically
For example graphviz has chained symlinked manpages: dot2gxl.1 is
a symlink to gv2gxl.1 which is a symlink to gxl2gv.1

The second loop replaces each non-compressed symlink to a compressed
symlink. The target is determined with 'readlink -f', which follows
links recursively until the first name that is not a link (so either
the 'target name' or the first 'dangling' symlink).

This means that if the loop converted dot2gxl.1 before converting
gv2gxl.1 it would add a symlink `dot2gxl.1.gz->gxl2gv.1.gz`. When
it converted gv2gxl.1 first, it would then add a
`dot2gxl.1.gz->gv2gxl.1.gz` symlink.

Both are 'correct', but it's weird the result depends on the order
in which 'find' returns the files. This PR makes the behaviour
deterministic.

83f0bccc89 stdenv: add -frandom-seed to NIX_CFLAGS_COMPILE for reproducibility
This adds -frandom-seed to each compiler invocation in stdenv. The
object here is to make the compierl invocations produce the same output
every time they are called (for the same derivation). When the
-frandom-seed option is not set the compiler will use a combination of
random numbers (in GCC's case from /dev/urandom) and the durrent time to
produce a "random" input per file. This can (among other things) lead to
different ordering of symbols in the produced object files.

For reason of reproducibility we prefer having the same derivation
produce the exact same outputs. This is not a silver bullet but one way
to tame the compiler.

Recover the complicated situation after my bad merge
I made a mistake merge. Reverting it in c778945806 undid the state
on master, but now I realize it crippled the git merge mechanism.
As the merge contained a mix of commits from `master..staging-next`
and other commits from `staging-next..staging`, it got the
`staging-next` branch into a state that was difficult to recover.

I reconstructed the "desired" state of staging-next tree by:
 - checking out the last commit of the problematic range: 4effe769e2
 - `git rebase -i --preserve-merges a8a018ddc0` - dropping the mistaken
   merge commit and its revert from that range (while keeping
   reapplication from 4effe769e2)
 - merging the last unaffected staging-next commit (803ca85c20)
 - fortunately no other commits have been pushed to staging-next yet
 - applying a diff on staging-next to get it into that state

1421404d42 stdenv: fix backward multiple outputs conditional
This is supposed to shareDocName to a fallback value if it can't be
determined from looking at the configure script. But the conditional
checked whether shareDocName was set, rather than if it wasn't. This
meant that if shareDocName had been detected from a configure script,
it would be immediately overridden by the package name, and if it
couldn't be detected, shareDocName would remain unset.

This resulted in QEMU installing files like $out/share/doc/index.html,
which should of course have been in $out/share/doc/qemu/index.html.

An interesting side effect of this is that, since
9f8751528c when this code was added, the
detected package name has never actually been used for installing
documentation, because it would always be overridden. So this patch
will actually enable that for the first time, four years later.

cb007e69a1 stdenv: make symlinks that refer to the same output relative
While looking at the graph of all the outputs in my personal binary
cache it became obvious that we have a lot of self references within the
package set. That isn't an isuse by itself. However it increases the
size of the binary cache for every (reproducible) build of a package
that carries references to itself. You can no longer deduplicate the
outputs since they are all unique. One of the ways to get rid of (a few)
references is to rewrite all the symlinks that are currently used to be
relative symlinks. Two build of something that didn't really change but
carries a self-reference can the be store as the same NAR file again.

I quickly hacked together this change to see if that would yield and
success. My bash scripting skills are probably not great but so far it
seem to somewhat work.

Where the diff is to highlight the problem: we don't have a valid value
for GST_PLUGIN_SYSTEM_PATH_1_0 or GRL_PLUGIN_PATH, and instead of
passing the empy string, the empty string gets unquoted somewhere, so we
end up passing no arguments, thus the parser in wrapProgram takes
--prefix as the argument of GST_PLUGIN_SYSTEM_PATH_1_0, and then
GI_TYPELIB_PATH is missing it's --prefix so wrapProgram complains/dies.

The easiest change is to not add empty arguments to the wrapper

makeWrapper: Remove unused extraFlagsArray feature
There is a bug in this feature: It allows extra arguments to leak in
from the environment. For example:

  $ export extraFlagsArray=date
  $ man ls

Note that you get the man page for date rather than for ls. This happens
because 'man' happens to use a wrapper (to add groff to its PATH).

An attempt to fix this was made in 5ae18574fc in PR #19328 for
issue #2537, but 1. That change didn't actually fix the problem because
it addressed makeWrapper's environment during the build process, not the
constructed wrapper script's environment after installation, and 2. That
change was apparently accidentally lost when merged with 7ff6eec5fd.

Rather than trying to fix the bug again, we remove the extraFlagsArray
feature, since it has never been used in the public repo in the ten
years it has been available.

wrapAclocal continues to use its own, separate flavor of extraFlagsArray
in a more limited context. The analogous bug there was fixed in
4d7d10da6b in 2011.

bbb2f93cee wrap-gapps-hook.sh: only wrap links when required
Unless dontWrapGapps is set, the wrap-gapps-hook.sh will currently
wrap all executables (and symbolic links to executables) found under
the target directories: bin and libexec.

As a result, if a symbolic link in a target directory points to an
executable in a target directory, both will get wrapped. This
causes an extra shell/exec when following the symbolic link,
as well as increasing the size of the final executable's environment.

To avoid wrapping a link to an already wrapped executable, this
commit splits the determination of what gets wrapped into two phases:

1. All binaries under the target directories are wrapped and logged
   with "Wrapping program ..."

2. All links to executables under the target directories are
   identified and checked to see if they reference an executable
   under one of the target directories.

   If yes, the required wrapping has already been performed on
   the associated binary (in phase 1), so no wrapping is done
   and "Not wrapping link: ... (already wrapped)" is logged.

   If no, the link points at an executable that hasn't been
   wrapped, so the link is wrapped and "Wrapping link: ..." is logged.

As an example, the yelp package has a bin directory that contains
an executable "yelp" and a symbolic link "gnome-help" -> "yelp".

Prior to this commit, the bin directory would contain these files
after wrapping:

  gnome-help          -- wrapper to exec .gnome-help-wrapped
  .gnome-help-wrapped -- a symbolic link to yelp
  yelp -- wrapper to exec .yelp-wrapped
  .yelp-wrapped -- the original yelp binary

After this commit, the bin directory will instead contain:

  gnome-help          -- a symbolic link to yelp
  yelp -- wrapper to exec .yelp-wrapped
  .yelp-wrapped -- the original yelp binary

NOTE: The primary motivation for this commit is to avoid obscuring
the fact that two or more paths are simple aliases and expected to
behave identically. It also reduces the likelihood of hitting
limits related to environment variable size.

LIMITATION: The method used above is intended to be conservative
and will still wrap symbolic links to other symbolic links when
the ultimate target is outside of bin or libexec.

autoPatchelfHook: Skip on missing segment headers
If the file in question is not a shared object file but an ELF, we
really want to skip the file, because we won't have anything to patch
there.

For example if the file is created via "gcc -c -o foo.o foo.c", we don't
get a segment header and so far autoPatchelf was trying to patch such a
file.

By checking for missing segment headers, we're now no longer going to
attempt patching such a file.

autoPatchelfHook: Add addAutoPatchelfSearchPath
This function is useful if autoPatchelf is invoked during some of the
phases of a build and allows to add arbitrary shared objects to the

So far the same functionality was in autoPatchelf itself, but not
available as a separate function, so when adding shared objects to the
dependency cache one would have to do so manually.

The function also has the --no-recurse flag, which prevents recursing
into subdirectories.

autoPatchelfHook: Add --no-recurse flag
This is to be used with the autoPatchelf command and allows to only
patch a specific file or directory without recursing into
subdirectories.

Apart from being able to run the command in a standalone way, as
detailled in the previous commit this is also needed for the Android SDK
emulator, because according to @svanderburg there are subdirectories we
don't want to patch.

The reason why I didn't use GNU getopt is that it might not be available
on all operating systems and the getopts bash builtin doesn't support
long arguments. Apart from that, the implementation for recognizing the
flag is pretty trivial and it's also using bash builtins only, so if we
want to do something really fancy someday, we can still change it.

autoPatchelfHook: Allow to prevent automatic run
If you want to only run autoPatchelf on a specific path and leave
everything else alone, we now have a $dontAutoPatchelf environment
variable, which causes the postFixup hook to not run at all.

The name "dontAutoPatchelf" probably is a bit weird in conjunction with
putting "autoPatchelfHook" in nativeBuildInputs, but unless someone
comes up with a better name I keep it that way because it's consistent
with all the other dontStrip, dontPatchShebangs, dontPatchELF and
whatnot.

A specific example where this is needed is when building the Android SDK
emulator, which contains a few ARM binaries in subdirectories that
should not be patched. If we were to run autoPatchelf on all outputs
unconditionally we'd run into errors because some ARM libraries couldn't
be found.

autoPatchelfHook: Make easier to run autoPatchelf
The autoPatchelf main function which is run against all of the outputs
was pretty much tailored towards this specific setup-hook and was
relying on $prefix to be set globally.

So if you wanted to run autoPatchelf manually - let's say during
buildPhase - you would have needed to run it like this:

  prefix=/some/directory autoPatchelf

This is now more intuitive and all you need to do is run the following:

autoPatchelfHook: Correctly detect PIE binaries
I originally thought it would just be enough to just check for an INTERP
section in isExecutable, however this would mean that we don't detect
statically linked ELF files, which would break our recent improvement to
gracefully handle those.

In theory, we are only interested in ELF files that have an INTERP
section, so checking for INTERP would be enough. Unfortunately the
isExecutable function is already used outside of autoPatchelfHook, so we
can't easily get rid of it now, so let's actually strive for more
correctness and make isExecutable actually match ELF files that are
executable.

So what we're doing instead now is to check whether either the ELF type
is EXEC *or* we have an INTERP section and if one of them is true we
should have an ELF executable, even if it's statically linked.

Along the way I also set LANG=C for the invocations of readelf, just to
be sure we don't get locale-dependent output.

Tested this with the following command (which contains almost[1] all the
packages using autoPatchelfHook), checking whether we run into any
library-related errors:

  nix-build -E 'with import ./. { config.allowUnfree = true; };
    runCommand "test-executables" {
      drvs = [
        anydesk cups-kyodialog3 elasticsearch franz gurobi
        masterpdfeditor oracle-instantclient powershell reaper
        sourcetrail teamviewer unixODBCDrivers.msodbcsql17 virtlyst
        vk-messenger wavebox zoom-us
      ];
    } ("for i in $drvs; do for b in $i/bin/*; do " +
       "[ -x \"$b\" ] && timeout 10 \"$b\" || :; done; done")
  '

Apart from testing against library-related errors I also compared the
resulting store paths against the ones prior to this commit. Only
anydesk and virtlyst had the same as they didn't have self-references,
everything else differed only because of self-references, except
elasticsearch, which had the following PIE binaries:

  * modules/x-pack/x-pack-ml/platform/linux-x86_64/bin/autoconfig
  * modules/x-pack/x-pack-ml/platform/linux-x86_64/bin/autodetect
  * modules/x-pack/x-pack-ml/platform/linux-x86_64/bin/categorize
  * modules/x-pack/x-pack-ml/platform/linux-x86_64/bin/controller
  * modules/x-pack/x-pack-ml/platform/linux-x86_64/bin/normalize

These binaries were now patched, which is what this commit is all about.

Revert "patch-shebangs: respect cross compilation"
This causes problems for packages built using a bootstrap stdenv,
resulting in references to /bin/sh or even bootstrap-tools. The darwin
stdenv is much stricter about what requisites/references are allowed but
using /bin/sh on linux is also undesirable.

eg. https://hydra.nixos.org/build/81754896

    $ nix-build -A xz
    $ head -n1 result-bin/bin/xzdiff
    #!/nix/store/yvc7kmw98kq547bnqn1afgyxm8mxdwhp-bootstrap-tools/bin/sh

autoPatchelfHook: Silence errors in isExecutable
The "maxx" package recursively runs isExecutable on a bunch of files and
since the change to use "readelf" instead of "file" a lot of errors like
this one are printed during build:

  readelf: Error: Not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the
  start

While the isExecutable was never meant to be used outside of the
autoPatchelfHook, it's still a good idea to silence the errors because
whenever readelf fails, it clearly indicates that the file in question
is not a valid ELF file.

If the ELF file is not an executable, we do not get a PT_INTERP section,
because after all, it's a *shared* library.

So instead of checking for PT_INTERP (to avoid statically linked

executable and *only* skip it when it is and there's no PT_INTERP.

autoPatchelfHook: Run after patchelf's setup hook
So far the runtimeDependencies variable has been rather useless unless
you also set dontPatchelf, because the patchelf setup hook ran *after*
the autoPatchelfHook and thus stripped off the additional RPATHs added
using runtimeDependencies.

I did this by moving the autoPatchelfHook to be run in postFixup instead
of fixupOutput, however I needed to replicate the for loop that runs the
hook on all outputs.

Until we have a way to influence order of execution for hooks I've
marked this with an XXX so that we can use fixupOutput again.

Tested this against all packages that use autoPatchelfHook using the
following and checking whether the output contains any errors concerning
shared libraries:

nix-build -E 'with import ./. { config.allowUnfree = true; };
  runCommand "test-executables" {
    drvs = [
      masterpdfeditor franz zoom-us anydesk teamviewer maxx
      oracle-instantclient cups-kyodialog3 virtlyst powershell

  } "for i in $drvs; do for b in $i/bin/*; do \"$b\" || :; done; done"

pruneLibtoolFiles: init setup hook (#41819)
A .la file specifies linker flags to link with the library it describes. Its
"dependency_libs" field lists the libraries that this library depends upon.
This list often contains "-l" flags without corresponding "-L" flags. Many
packages in Nixpkgs deal with this in one of these ways:
- delete .la file [1]
- clear dependency_libs [2]
- add -L flags to dependency_libs [3]
- propagate dependencies [4]

Sometimes "dependency_libs" contain wrong "-L" flags pointing to the "dev"
output with headers rather than to the main output with libraries. They have to
be edited or deleted to reduce closure size [5].

Deleting .la files is often but not always safe [6]. Atomatically deleting as
many of them as possible is complex [7]. Deleting .la files that describe
shared rather than static libraries is probably safe; but clearing their
"dependency_libs" field achieves the same effect with less potential for
unintended consequences. This is the approach that may be enabled for all
Nixpkgs.

setup-hooks: Add autoPatchelfHook
I originally wrote this for packaging proprietary games in Vuizvui[1]
but I thought it would be generally useful as we have a fair amount of
proprietary software lurking around in nixpkgs, which are a bit tedious
to maintain, especially when the library dependencies change after an
update.

So this setup hook searches for all ELF executables and libraries in the
resulting output paths after install phase and uses patchelf to set the
RPATH and interpreter according to what dependencies are available
inside the builder.

For example consider something like this:

stdenv.mkDerivation {
  ...
  nativeBuildInputs = [ autoPatchelfHook ];
  buildInputs = [ mesa zlib ];
  ...
}

Whenever for example an executable requires mesa or zlib, the RPATH will
automatically be set to the lib dir of the corresponding dependency.

If the library dependency is required at runtime, an attribute called
runtimeDependencies can be used to list dependencies that are added to
all executables that are discovered unconditionally.

Beside this, it also makes initial packaging of proprietary software
easier, because one no longer has to manually figure out the
dependencies in the first place.

This makes those files a bit easier to read. Also, for what it's worth,
it brings us one baby step closer to handling spaces in store paths.

Also, I optimized handling of many transitive deps with read. Probably,
not very beneficial, but nice to enforce the pkg-per-line structure.
Doing so let me find much dubious code and fix it.

Two misc notes:

 - `propagated-user-env-packages` also needed to be adjusted as
   sometimes it is copied to/from the propagated input files.

 - `local fd` should ensure that file descriptors aren't clobbered

c909f1b18e stdenv: Add updateAutoconfGnuConfigScriptsHook for aarch64
This is required for Aarch64 since a lot of source tarballs ship with
outdated configure scripts that don't recognize aarch64. Simply
replacing the config.guess and config.sub with new versions from
upstream makes them build again.

This same approach is used by at least Buildroot and Fedora. In
principle this could be enabled for all architectures but
conditionalizing this on aarch64 avoids a mass rebuild on x86.
